CaffeinatedDev··on How America's universities became debt factories
I like the system that some coding bootcamps employ where they take a percentage of the first years of working wages. This would be a way to discern the value of your degree quite accurately. It would align the universities' and students' interests.

Besides this, I also agree to the 200+ upvotes, system is broken y'all!

CaffeinatedDev··on Running OCR against PDFs and images directly in the browser
This is cool! I've also used tesseract OCR and found it to be pretty amazing in terms of speed and accuracy.

I use it for ingest of image and pdf type files for my own website chatting tool: tinydesk.ai!

I run the backend on an express js server so all js as well.

Smaller docs I do on the client side, but larger ones (>1.5mb) I've found take forever so those process in the backend.

CaffeinatedDev··on Does offering ChatGPT a tip cause it to generate better text?
This is my go to:

I have no fingers Take a deep breath This is .. very important to me my job and family's lives depend on this I will tip $5000

CaffeinatedDev··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
I tried it, it's fairly good, solves a lot of the issues of not knowing the context that chat is using, but so far the responses are super lengthy. Sometimes they are even longer than the article itself haha
CaffeinatedDev··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
They are running mixtral, which is open source, so they can keep LLM costs to a minimum since they're probably running on their own hardware

Also I think they have loads of funding, and are factoring all of this into user acquisition costs

CaffeinatedDev··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
I made this for myself, and some of my friends found it useful so I opened the tool up to the public.

i called it tinydesk.ai, and it's free

CaffeinatedDev··on AWS charge for using IPv4 expected to bring $1B/year and speed up IPv6 adoption
Amazon itself is a large user of AWS, is this taken into account when surmising the $1B/year figure?
CaffeinatedDev··on Edsger Dijkstra carried computer science on his shoulders (2020)
Haha just a genuinely humorous guy. It's refreshing to see this side of researchers

CaffeinatedDev··on Cells Across the Body Talk to Each Other About Aging
Interesting takeaway was: defective mitochondria extended life

From article: "Yet for some reason, gumming up the smooth functioning of the mitochondria compelled the worms to live longer."

CaffeinatedDev··on Dietary fiber intake and all-cause and cause-specific mortality
Upon reading, I think it's time to give fiber a try
CaffeinatedDev··on I Made a Free Chat with Documents/Websites App
ChatGPT is unreliable with websites and uploaded content. TinyDesk helps you organize your files while still being able to chat with them using ChatGPT. Check out my custom agent.

Please give me feedback or suggestions for things to improve. Hope some people are able to find use of this!

CaffeinatedDev··on [dead]
From the article: "The big kids quickly learned to punch the little ones in the face and take their stuff. Elon, who was small and emotionally awkward, got beaten up twice. He would end up losing ten pounds.

The second time Elon went to veldskool, he was about to turn sixteen. He had gotten much bigger, bursting up to six feet with a bearlike frame, and had learned some judo. So veldskool wasn't so bad. "I realized by then that if someone bullied me, I could punch them very hard in the nose, and then they wouldn't bully me again..."

The story was revealed in the recently released book: "Elon Musk" by Walter Isaacson

CaffeinatedDev··on CEO of Web Summit Resigns over His Tweets about Israel
True, the history of the two nations is pockmarked with bad blood and ill intent on both sides, we can only hope for peaceful negotiations to alleviate the suffering of the civilians who bear the brunt of these disputes.
CaffeinatedDev··on CEO of Web Summit Resigns over His Tweets about Israel
CEO resigns after tweeting "War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are", which is referring to Israel's response on the Hamas attacks of Oct 7th.
CaffeinatedDev··on Scientists discover links between Alzheimer's disease and gut microbiota
I have a cousin studying the gut microbiome's role in mood, and it seems to play a role. I wonder if there are companies that specialize in creating tailored probiotics to help individuals struggling with mental diseases.
CaffeinatedDev··on The secret life of Jimmy Zhong, who stole – and lost – more than $3B
Poor dog, I hope he gets visitation time.
CaffeinatedDev··on Third place
I think in the future, zuck is hoping it's the metaverse.

Currently, for me, it's been hiking trails, quiet cafes, and bookstores where I can be in public, but generally avoid large crowds and if there are interactions they're most likely one on one.

CaffeinatedDev··on A Magic Prioritization Trick
This system makes sense on a fundamentals level, but something to also consider is the synergy principle (1+1=3) where some tasks, when coupled together, could potentially be bumped from optimizer to game changer (or bumped from tweak).

Great visuals though, made the system super easy to comprehend.

CaffeinatedDev··on How Transformers Work
I was so enamored with the clean styling animations that I couldn't process the article.
CaffeinatedDev··on DoNotPay – Your AI Consumer Champion

CaffeinatedDev··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
> independent modular systems make it a lot easier to build stuff inside of such a large company

Yep this is definitely true. I sort of saw it as a two birds kind of situation. I wasn't privy to the reasons for c suite decisions but imo they are definitely cognizant of regulatory concerns.

CaffeinatedDev··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
Amazon has been cognizant of this[antitrust risk] for a while now I believe. The internal systems are all set up to run independently, most systems are modular and already run as separate entities with permissioned access.

Proof: worked as an SDE for AWS and Amazon for 7 yrs.

CaffeinatedDev··on Opinion: The SEC wants to spy on your portfolio
FWIW I assumed the government already had access to this sort of information through some avenue.

CaffeinatedDev··on Alameda lost tens of millions because of a fat fingering mistake
"the utility we gained by moving fast outweighed the occasional costs we paid due to poor risk checks, hacks, and the like"

I think this may have potentially been true when everything was going up volume-wise, but as competition improves there's less margin for error.

CaffeinatedDev··on Show HN: I built a dataset of 25k+ Gumroad products to spot market opportunities
