Cmccann7··on Mountain Gorillas Are Doing Better
Yeah no problem.

We stayed here: Silverback Lodge > https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g319722-d2045553-Re... - and set up our trekking through the hotel. They only allow small groups at a time and limited number of treks (for the gorillas to not be overwhelmed) so its best to just book through the hotel.

A few other things to keep in mind:

- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is quite far from the main airport. So I'd suggest staying near the airport for the night and leaving the next morning. Although even if you do that you might not get in till pretty late at night, and its really remote so hard to get directions. Try to have whatever hotel you stay at arrange transportation, I wouldn't suggest driving yourself.

- As the name implies - Bwindi "Impenetrable" National Park - the hike can be pretty strenuous. The guide will scout out where the gorillas are before you leave but it depends where they are - can easily be a 3hr+ hike through steep inclines so prepare for that.

- One option you can do is to use a porter, we did just because of how much camera equipment I had. Although even if I didn't have much stuff it was still nice to have stuff.

If anyone else has any specific questions happy to answer them here as well.

It's an amazing experience to see the mountain gorillas up close. Here is a portrait I took of one of the silverbacks: https://chrismccann.com/uganda#king

We went through the Uganda side, was quite the adventure and hike to get there but was definitely worth it. Happy to share more tips or the company we used if anyone is interested.

Cmccann7··on Salt Ponds of the San Francisco Bay
I've taken a few pictures of these salt ponds before. They change colors quite frequently and form really cool and unique patters. Best view of them is up in the air in a helicopter or plane.

https://chrismccann.com/outside-facebook-hq - These are the salt ponds being reclaimed outside of the Facebook office.

https://chrismccann.com/palette - Here are the ones in Fremont, still being used for salt production.

Cmccann7··on Medium Raises $57M
I've been using Medium for writing, recently with the notes from the Stanford 183C class taught by Reid Hoffman > https://medium.com/notes-essays-cs183c-technology-enabled-bl...

From the writer's perspective: 1) interface is clean and easy to write on - easy to format things, embedd video, embedd pictures, etc 2) easy to share drafts and get edits from others 3) 5%-10% of traffic comes internally from medium.com, so helps with distribution 4) SEO's well and works out of the box without me having to set anything up.

PS - I work at Greylock Partners which invested in Medium but I didn't have any say with the investment decision nor do I have to use Medium. I just like writing on there.

Cmccann7··on Show HN: Weekend project, fun spin on dating. Only friends edit your profile
I love this concept. Your app seriously needs a few things though.

1) You have to be able to message people on a dating site, none of this coming soon button. 2) You have to be able to have some rudimentary search/filter. People want to find people of the gender they are interested in, location, etc.

You've probably thought of both of these already but a dating site really has to have both of those.

Author here. I wrote this post in response to a confidential conversation I had with a friend about his company on the verge of going under.

Happy to answer any questions or feedback anyone has.

Startups are a marathon not a sprint. It's so hard to appreciate that until you've been in that situation.

2 comments on usability if the site owner is reading this.

1) On the payment screen you have Paypal has an option but I can't actually click on it to allow the paypal option. I'm using the newest version of Chrome.

2) I went through the whole registration with credit card details and everything and I got an error message back saying "We're closed" and to come back 9-5pm. It would be much easier for me and probably for you just to take down all my information and process it when you're open or let me pre-pay for a wash or something. It's a little frustrating that I will have to do that all over again.

Cmccann7··on Show HN: I Created the Inverse of Angry Birds
This is freaking awesome. Congrats on releasing the project Gordon!

Just played till level nine and even paid for unlocking the rest of the levels. Some feedback:

1) The game needs music. It's a little quiet after awhile, would be much better with music. 2) On a lot of the levels you don't need to do anything and you'll "win" by just pressing play. 3) Totally understand why you have the ads on in the game but sometimes on the cloud levels it gets in the way of placing blocks. 4) Sometimes the game gets stuck at the end and doesn't count up all of the points 5) Counting up the points on level with a ton of items in it takes forever 6) You should also explain the different birds and which ones are coming. Noticed some had dynamite strapped to them but didn't expect that at all. 7) On replay I really wish I had the previous blocks stay where they were.

Overall an awesome game but wanted to give you some feedback on it after I played around with it for awhile.

Cmccann7··on OccupyCal - Police brutality at UC Berkeley
I would never normally submit anything political and I have not even been active in the Occupy Movement at all. But I saw this on twitter and couldn't believe it hasn't been covered anywhere else. This is literally happening in Berkeley and one of the school professors was taken to the hospital because of it

It's called the "Power Law" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_law

You also hear a lot about the top 20% taking 80% of the gains which is a special case of the power law called Pareto Distribution > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_distribution

You see these same distribution patterns occur all over the place in economics, biology, chemistry, etc.

Cmccann7··on Are You An Entrepreneur Going Back To School? Attend Stanford. Here's Why.
Yes you totally can. You can live by Stanford, attend the meetups/hackatons/events that all of the stanford students are going to, and help out with some of the entrepreneurial programs (SSE Labs, BASES, Think Outside, etc).
Cmccann7··on Myths about entrepreneurs
The media in general loves to fit stories into archetypal stories that are easily digested by audiences. The 20 year old scrappy kid fits right into the "David vs. Goliath" archetype, people love to hear stories about someone winning against all odds.
Cmccann7··on Groupon May Expire Sooner Than Expected
I read a lot of their articles and my take on it is, it's a huffpo style mismash. Some of the authors are awesome and very high quality and some seem like day traders. I always check the authors leaderboard reputation before reading the article and usually only check the macro-economic section
