Its refreshing. Another tech keynote that I regularly watch (Apple) is far too polished these days.

And weapons.

I think many folks are missing the fact that Dave's blog is largely targeted towards those in leadership, in which story telling/selling is an _essential_ skill.

I've always wondered why Ikea didn't offer convenient in-house delivery options. Good job.

What would it take, in your opinion, for that reputation to be outrun?

uh, its going to be the 2nd in 2023

Thank you DHH + all the contributors who’ve brought Rails this far. Many careers and companies have been built on your collective shoulders.

Does there exist a resource that tracks outages on a per-region basis over time?

Can we just get 2fa?

What are y'all using instead of k8s?

Let me clarify: since the subdomain is hidden, I now have to munge with the URL input field to just get the full url to show up so that I can then modify the subdomain.

Thank you to whomever submitted this. My main annoyance is that when I want to go to a subdomain, I'll typically start typing foo.domain.com, but now the browser sets it to www.foo.domain.com. Annoying.

At least we can buy a home for <400k here in Austin. Still, wow.

Use Arq, backup to Backblaze storage, and pay $0.005/GB/month. That 50 GB would cost $0.25 a month. If you can afford a MacBook, you can afford an encrypted cloud backup of your HD.

Billing systems are hard. Building a system to serve as the billing system for N clients? Wow. Kudos to all involved.

> It reminds me of BET... why would we want to segregate content to one specific channel or network? It feels backwards to me. True diversity would be having this content everywhere.

But the content isn't everywhere. There are only 24 hours of programming possible per day per traditional channel but too many diverse interests/cultures/etc to cram them all in during primetime, hence the need for specialty channels.

> I can't help but feel like it is the wrong approach to diversity.

How would you approach it?

> they won't let you unlock your credit to apply for a mortgage

So how do you recover from something like that? Are you basically prevented from using credit for the rest of your life?

The public sector. I got my first dev job at the local state university. They pay less than the private sector, thus making it harder for them to find solid talent. Put in a few years, and then jump ship once you've accumulated the requisite experience to no-longer be entry-level.

Richard Schneeman (an engineer at Heroku) wrote a great blog post on this very topic; worth the read: https://schneems.com/2017/07/26/omscs-omg-is-an-online-maste...

How long is your commute?

I thought stealth mode meant that a company had yet to launch. Do you mean that they're not pursuing press, just keeping their heads down and making money?

Based on your experience, would you recommend one vendor over the other? (aws vs gcp)

Parks too?

I spent this past week learning/solving this very issue. MySQL's utf8 character set doesn't actually include _all_ utf8 characters. Use utf8mb4 instead. Same goes for collation; use utf8mb4_unicode_ci.

Did you bother to read the post?

> Rising juniors and seniors in Howard’s computer science (CS) program can attend Howard West, for three months at a time.

I'm not sure what I could've said to make my 'non-answer' to that specific question any clearer.

> Is this really a school that only allows people of a certain race?

No.
