CodeCompost··on What sort of maths are LLMs good at?
LLMs have no sense of geography. They measure distances between parts of words, not distances between parts of world.
CodeCompost··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
Thanks for the PSA. Uninstalled.

  2. Local models are not "ready yet". You still have to own decent hardware and it will not be the same level of frontier models. I am big fan of local first, offline and "unlimited usage" compared to paid solutions. But probably I have to wait few or several years to get to that point.
This is why tech companies are working hard to make sure you can never build your own computer again.

Thanks for this. I've been thinking about something like this as pertains to energy use. Which algorithm is the most energy efficient? I'm actually quite curious.
CodeCompost··on NetBSD 11.0
The current status? If you're considering doing anything serious with Unix, absolutely you should use Linux. No question. Don't waste your time with any BSDs.

But ... if you want to teleport back to the 90s and go back to an era before Linux took off on a rocket ship to universal dominance then the BSD are for you. You will find a much more curated experience when people thought that documentation mattered. It is the road less traveled.

CodeCompost··on After the AI Crash
It won't be the same as 2000 because back then I didn't spend a dime on those ridiculous startups that went bust.

CodeCompost··on I found a WordPress RCEs with GPT5.6 and $25
I like the idea of not crediting the person who posted the bug but to the LLM that found it. People who find exploits using LLMs should never get a reward or credit.

$160K for a software engineer? I don't even get close to that number.

Microsoft knows who he is because he alleges they deleted his Microsoft account and flagged his GitHub. And he says he was "publicly humiliated" in a CVE so I assume his name was on it.

> it more difficult to identify who to invite to join the priesthood.

How about this. Somebody forks the project and submits their patches to the fork . If the fork is successful (there are users actively using it), upstream can selectively go fish for the patches themselves. The maintainer of the fork eventually gets recognized.

Not ideal, I know, but building a reputation is meant to take time.

CodeCompost··on Angular v22
A few years ago I was in the process of abandoning Angular in favor of React.

I've gone back to advocating Angular because it has been making a major comeback. It's genuinely awesome now.

I have to admit LLMs are actually quite useful at generating code for me, but I am experienced enough to know what I want. I use it as a next-generation autocomplete.

CodeCompost··on FatGid: FreeBSD 14.x kernel local privilege escalation
I'm curious to see how many issues an LLM can find for OpenBSD. Not knocking OpenBSD at all, genuinely curious to see if all the careful development can stand up to LLMs.

Quit smoking 10 years ago. Best thing I ever did. I'm particularly inspired by articles like this:

According to the article I have 5 years to go till my body has completely recovered from the effects of smoking.
