CodeCube··on Software Engineering Grads Lack the Skills Startups Need
I mean, early stage startups fit your description, sure ... but I can't imagine many startups surviving much traction if those things don't start being looked at soon enough. Of course, some do (see twitter's Fail Whale), but I'm guessing the vast majority of startups that fail to scale ... well, they fail
CodeCube··on Rich Families Are Legally Separating from Their Kids to Pay Less for College
This isn't exactly rocket science ... my daughter just started college, and as a tech industry employee let me tell you, she got no financial aid (some other academic things aside).

When we started filling out the student loan paperwork, I had literally this idea (the whole legal separation thing) as a passing thought. Of course, because I'm not a monster, I laughed it off and kept on filling out the paperwork ... but one doesn't have to be a great student out of Wharton to figure out a scam like this, and you can bet your arse more people have actually pulled the trigger on it.

What year did you graduate college, if you don't mind sharing?
CodeCube··on How Does Esperanto Sound?
This is the first time I've actually heard Esperanto spoken aloud ... very cool, thanks for posting.

What drove you to learn Esperanto originally?

CodeCube··on Hasbro to Buy Peppa Pig Owner for $4B
Peppa is also the subject of a weird tiktok meme at the moment (or maybe the moment's passed already ... I don't know, I'm old and lame :P ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0uxRav86NI
CodeCube··on How Men’s Bodies Change When They Become Fathers
same ... I'll also add that for a time, I became hyper-aware of literally any noise that happened anywhere in my house at night. Lol, I can't tell you how many times I jumped out of bed to fend off an imagined intruder, or to run into the baby's room to make sure she was still breathing :P
CodeCube··on How Men’s Bodies Change When They Become Fathers
Most of the others commenting here have seem to have small children, so of course their feedback is going to highlight all the ways in which their lives have changed.

To offer a counter-point, my daughter is 18 and off to college (literally dropping her off this saturday), and my son is 15. With each moment that passes from the time they are born, things get easier ... sleep? improves. complete and utter dependency? they learn to wipe their own bum. So, all the things that _seem_ really bad that people are reporting here are, ultimately, rather temporary.

That's not to say there aren't new challenges that come once they get older, and some challenges aren't experienced by everyone (I feel incredibly lucky and blessed that I haven't had any behavioral issues with my kids). So ... yeah ... they're not little parasites forever, just keep that in mind :P

I'm not a student :)
CodeCube··on CTVT – A contagious cancer that spreads from dog to dog
Without having read the article, and not being a biologist ... is this anything like HPV/Cervical cancer for humans?
CodeCube··on Japanese anime studio Khara moving to Blender
This wasn't really necessary to point out ... I'm not a 3d artist, I don't need to do this, which is why 1) not free professional tools and b) non-intuitive free software UI, was enough of a barrier to keep me out.

I'm familiar enough with the 3d workflow/pipeline, so it has nothing to do with an ignorance of what 3d art is and what it takes to accomplish ... but I've mostly stuck with making 2d games when I make games because pixels are easy to push around, and there are a plethora of software out there to do so.

CodeCube··on Japanese anime studio Khara moving to Blender
I keep hearing that blender's UI is no longer the domain of dark wizards ... between the cost of the paid products, and the funky UI of older versions of blender, I could never quite get into 3d modeling and design. Maybe it's time to revisit?
CodeCube··on I feel like im talking to the borg
The worst of excuses for bad behavior, "it wasn't us, it was the subcontractors (that we told to act that way)!"
CodeCube··on I quit my job today to make video games full time
I was an XNA MVP ... worked on a bunch of community content/articles. Was working on a game towards the end, but then the windows phone era of XNA came in and diverted my attentions, and by the time I'd made more progress on my game the community was winding down :(

Still want to revisit that game idea ... someday

XBLIG shoutout! Congrats and best of luck on your new venture.
CodeCube··on Ask HN: Just found out that I’m gonna be a dad
I'll add on to the "comfort crying baby" point ... once you cover the basics (clean? fed? dry? warm? burped? etc), sometimes babies just cry, and that's ok. Obviously you should be mindful and watchful over their condition, but there's no need to be stressed over a crying child in the short term as long as you've made sure everything is ok.

I'm only mentioning it because with my first (daughter) I would get really stressed and worried if she continued to cry after I did all the above. Just talk to them, play with them, and all will be good :)

CodeCube··on US Navy will replace touchscreen with mechanical controls on its destroyers
The more I get into synthesizers, the more I want analog controls (knobs, sliders, buttons, VC cable inputs!)
CodeCube··on The rise of the indelibly-illustrated everyman
Lol, if the author tattoos themselves, it changes nothing. That would be equivalent to someone chopping off their own limb, getting a prosthesis, and then (being a mental giant that can put words in order) penning an article in 15 minutes (proof reading it for 5 minutes, of course) about why disabled folks shouldn't get prosthesis titled, "the hubris of man".

At the end of the day, keep your opinions about what other people do to/for themselves to yourself ... it's as simple as that. And when you choose to exercise your right to share that unrequested opinion, don't be alarmed when you get a middle finger in your face.

CodeCube··on The rise of the indelibly-illustrated everyman
There's a huge difference between:

1. Not liking something

and

2. Going out of your way to write a long article detailing all the shortcomings of those that partake in the thing you don't like.

Of course you have the right to dislike tattoos, but that doesn't give anyone the right to tell someone they suck for something they chose because they like it.

CodeCube··on Another wave of nootropic supplements is hitting the market
To be fair ... even if it's the placebo effect, couldn't that be argued to be "good enough"?

Just like Dumbo's feather, if you feel better then you felt better ;)

CodeCube··on Steve Wozniak Says People Should Get Off Facebook Permanently
I'm not disagreeing with you (I've never used this service you linked) ... but what becomes "the town square" has nothing to do with how optimized or tuned it is for that purpose. People are gonna do what people are gonna do, and if you want to be involved with certain people, you gotta go where they are.
CodeCube··on Give Your Yard Back to Nature

CodeCube··on The decline of the family has unleashed an epidemic of loneliness
Are you an unreliable, selfish, and inconsiderate man? If the answer is yes, then it's an attack on you ... if however you work to be reliable, selfless, and considerate, then it's not an attack on you.

Surely, you have to acknowledge that throughout history, men have been quite terrible to women ... and yes, some of that exists still today. So that being the case, you _must_ understand that for many women out there, it's still a struggle to live their life in a way that is not negatively influenced by some men.

CodeCube··on Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World
Sounds like you have internal knowledge of this process ... how does it work, do you have to formally tell your boss that your fridays will be spent on 20% time? do they need to give you permission? or do you just have to sneak the time in at your discretion?
CodeCube··on Plausible Deniability and Gaslighting in Fighting Ad Blockers
I'm curious if you wouldn't mind sharing what was the context around that pitch, and your subsequent response. It sounds like you didn't go forward with implementing that ... was it your decision to not move forward, or were you in a team and that's just what ended up happening?
CodeCube··on Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World
But really, why be bored? If you find yourself bored, just use the new resources you have at your disposal to do something interesting! Being part of a large company comes with a number of benefits, whether it's access to smart folks, or access to IP, or access to infrastructure, etc etc ... you have an opportunity in front of you. Use it!
CodeCube··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
yes ... but I'll be honest, that was extenuating circumstances. Never would have happened were it not for 9/11, so I consider that a black swan event
CodeCube··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
Sure, that point of OP's post was pedantically incorrect ... but I think the overarching point they were trying to make is that the republicans haven't had a candidate elected by the popular vote since 1989 when GHWB was elected. Since then, both elections in which a republican president won the office, was while losing the popular vote ... that's THIRTY YEARS since the last true win.

Looked at from that perspective, yeah that feels pretty depressing that it keeps happening.

CodeCube··on Making Nuclear Energy Smaller, Cheaper And Safer
I hear what you're saying, but I think the point I tried to make in my OP is getting lost here ... in a (well run) facility such as this, nothing would fester unnoticed for years. Actually, I love that you posted some of Grady's videos ... it shows just how much knowledge we have around these problems. And yes, they're not easy, and they're not necessarily cheap to deal with ... but we can deal with them. It's a known problem.
CodeCube··on Amazon rolls out machines that pack orders and replace jobs
Semi-related ... I feel like we should tax rent-seeking way more than we do. Selling a piece of property/house is one thing, but to extend your metaphor, why should one get to seek rent on a piece of property in perpetuity (if the tenant stays long term)?

Of course, I understand how valuable short-term living arrangements are for a number of reasons; my issue is with long term landlords, who can evict a tenant who's been there for decades at any whim ... and they reap the profits, while the tenant is out on the streets with nothing to gain from their many years of payments.
