ComodoHacker··on Show HN: Real-time Solar System with 526k asteroids and all tracked satellites
Thanks for the great work!

Tracking ISS orbit combined with live feed [0] is amazing.

ComodoHacker··on Hacking OpenAI
I wonder how long before frontier labs will backdoor guardrails of their models to allow hacking competitors' infrastructure.
ComodoHacker··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
What is "code switching"?
ComodoHacker··on The new HTTP QUERY method explained
More complex actually
ComodoHacker··on The new HTTP QUERY method explained
Except compatibility. If you're using classic GET and it's enough for you, you aren't affected.
ComodoHacker··on 1,600 days of a failed hobby data science project
Turns out it wasn't nearly as much as 1600 days of labor. So, clickbait headline.
ComodoHacker··on Scientific rigor proponents retract paper on benefits of scientific rigor
>Publishing by itself does little to advance science

I strongly disagree. Publishing advances science the same way communication advances culture. Imagine Einstein didn't published any of his work. How many decades back in technology and quality of life we'd have been now?

It's like any evolutionary beneficial trait gets transferred to all population in one generation instead of many. It saves precious time.

ComodoHacker··on The formatting of Oracle-branded HGST SSDs (2021)
Somehow this page makes my latest Firefox continuously eat all available memory.
ComodoHacker··on OpenSSH introduces options to penalize undesirable behavior
Will it really help today, when anyone with any serious intent doesn't launch their attacks from one or two standalone hosts, but buys botnet capacity?
ComodoHacker··on Show HN: 2d web paddle game
I believe the idea was to give the player more control with limited input signals.

>using where it hits to affect the angle never totally made sense to me

I believe different angles add complexity and fun.

ComodoHacker··on Shopify is acquiring the Threads team
Is it a pun, hinting that Slack is for slackers?
ComodoHacker··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
I guess AI is the next thing that's still opt-in now, will be opt-out tomorrow and then no-escape. It would be interesting to read a nostalgic thread from 2070...
ComodoHacker··on Regular expression functions in Excel
Can I parse response (JSON, XML, whatever) into cells without VBA?
ComodoHacker··on Migrating Uber's ledger data from DynamoDB to LedgerStore
Don't blame yourself. Not everyone is here for the money, many of us are here for the tech.
ComodoHacker··on Zoraxy: Open-Source, All in one homelab network routing solution
It is routing web requests to backend endpoints, I guess.
ComodoHacker··on GPT-4o
Secrets are either written down somewhere and end up on the Internet, or forgotten.
ComodoHacker··on Defense Against AI-Guided Traffic Analysis (Daita)
Could random packet delays or delay equalization help here (instead of additional packets)?
ComodoHacker··on Bottle Plotter
My father have used PVA for homemade wine for decades. Works fine.
ComodoHacker··on BeeBase, a programmable relational database with graphical user interface
Is there any technical docs on internals? How it does I/O, caching, consistency, concurrency etc.?
ComodoHacker··on Show HN: PostgreSQL index advisor
This doesn't seem to consider or give insight on any tradeoffs involved.

Also, the underlying extension, HypoPG, doesn't seem to collect any statistics on data to influence query planner.

Big Guys do this. For big bucks, of course.
ComodoHacker··on Why can't my mom email me?
>this basically comes down to State Actors ... or Everyone Else

This is oversimplification if not misleading. There are also Bad Guys (who aren't state actors), who usually can't reach for your data. But occasionally they can, when rare Planet Parades like Heartbleed or Meltdown make the news. And they are happy to use this one-in-a-lifetime chance to sell access to your data to everyone else.

ComodoHacker··on Why can't my mom email me?
>the sensible default would be to send email unencrypted

That's exactly what anti-encryptionists would want.

ComodoHacker··on FFmpeg 7.0
So, the next candidate for backdooring? :)
ComodoHacker··on Shattered Pixel Dungeon is an open-source traditional roguelike dungeon crawler
I'm still trying to beat it on normal difficulty. The farthest I got was first floors of the necromancer's tower, which is about 1/4 of the game AFAIK. I resist the temptation to try any add-on, there's so much fun without them.

And if you play on PC, also avoid Tales of Maj'Eyal (https://te4.org/), because of its depth and almost infinite replayability.
ComodoHacker··on PostgreSQL internals: Things to know about update statements
When you're incrementing by using UPDATE ... SET value = value + 1, the database holds the locks for the minimum time needed. Everything else is less efficient.

In more complex scenarios, FOR UPDATE is the solution.

ComodoHacker··on BrainGPT turns thoughts into text
Suddenly they all vigorously turn pro-privacy.
ComodoHacker··on BrainGPT turns thoughts into text
On the other hand, the main practical feature of a language is its astronomical SNR, which brain waves lack, to say the least. This allows LLMs to be trained on texts instead of millions of live people. Just imagine the number of parameters and compute resources required for the model to be useful to more than one human.
