CrowFly··on How do I delete bytes from the beginning of a file? (2010)
Linux doesn't implement sparse files.
CrowFly··on Password expiration is dead, long live passwords
I have 2 and 3 year CDs in a bunch of banks. (This is a common use case, people open separate accounts because of the FDIC insurance limit in any one bank). I only need to log in again 2 or 3 years after opening the account to either take the money out, or open another CD.

Some of these banks expire passwords every 6 months! That's insane. I have calendar reminders set to remind me to log in and generate another password with LastPass.

CrowFly··on Alexa shows private Wyze Cam feed to stranger [video]
WARNING: If you watch the video your Alexa devices will respond!
CrowFly··on Foreign Minister Taro Kono to ask media to switch order of Japanese names
And some languages have no upper and lower case, like my native language (Hebrew).
CrowFly··on How Apple Card Works
I don't get the "no late fees" feature. I suppose they'll still make plenty of money with the interest charges, and they'll probably freeze the card for new charges at some point.
CrowFly··on Windows 10 Privilege Escalation via Dolby's DAX2_API Service
Yes! This is why I was thrilled when Microsoft started making their own laptops. The only thing I had to kill on this Surface Book was this annoying little popop that offered deals on Microsoft Office, and that was simple to disable--it had an uninstall button right on it.
CrowFly··on Windows 10 Privilege Escalation via Dolby's DAX2_API Service
Is this "Dolby DAX2" a standard component? There's no trace of it on my stock Windows 10 Surface Book.
CrowFly··on Show HN: OSwatch – A News Aggregation Site for Open-Source Software
A search for "Erlang" showed zero results.
CrowFly··on ChakraCore GitHub repository is now open
I switched back to Windows 10 as my primary desktop and laptops OS after years of running Mac -- especially on laptops.

We do a lot of high-end GPU stuff here, and Apple doesn't make any hardware that supports multiple high-end NVIDIA cards in any practical way. And no Apple monitor does 100% AppleRGB or any of the cinema color spaces, so we always needed third party monitors when doing color work.

Windows 10 is as nice and stable as Mac OS used to be (before Steve Jobs died).

CrowFly··on San Francisco's Fog Over Growth
Not quite. There are "parcel taxes" too that keep going up.

And 2%/year increase isn't inconsequential.

CrowFly··on TrendMicro Node.js HTTP server listening on localhost can execute commands
Windows Defender on Windows 10 works fine. You'd be crazy to either disable it and/or install a different security product.
CrowFly··on Yahoo’s Brain Drain Shows a Loss of Faith Inside the Company
There's a loss of faith outside the Company, too. I can't imagine anyone becoming an employee of Yahoo today.
CrowFly··on San Francisco Office Rents Pass Manhattan as Most Expensive in Country
Having lived in both, I can tell you that Manhattan is much nicer, cleaner, and safer, with more resources, better food, and better culture. Violent Crime rate is 2.5x times higher in San Francisco. (Ask Wolfram Alpha)
CrowFly··on [dead]
Because of the 80 character limit!
CrowFly··on Colorizing black and white photos with deep learning
I wonder if the "deep learning" is getting any hints from the bayer patterns that may be detectable even in the desaturated image. It would be interesting to see what it did from a true b/w sensor, a Fovean sensor, or a scan of black and white films.

On a related "deep learning" topic:

We do a lot of work with 3D modeling tools and scanning large objects, including people, at our facility.

One thing we realized that should be possible with "deep learning" is taking a standard human computer model, and configuring it to match the position and shape of a scanned human model, or a photo of a human being -- in order to add back missing bits. Imagine a website where you can upload a swimsuit image and get back a computer generated nude image with the obscured body parts replaced. This should be very doable today, and would make a very popular website!

CrowFly··on Facebook's “free internet” programme hits a roadblock in India
Well, there you go! It _was_ a good idea.
CrowFly··on Facebook's “free internet” programme hits a roadblock in India
I wonder it it would be feasible to tunnel the "real internet" through Facebook using (for example) their chat client (you'd need something on the other end to make the connection). Like tunneling a VPN over DNS queries. That would be a clever work-around.
CrowFly··on Let artificial intelligence guess your attractiveness and age
I uploaded a photo of my (male) personal trainer. It got it exactly right. Age 26 and "stunning."
CrowFly··on Twitter Considering 10,000-Character Limit for Tweets
I feel bad for Twitter because they have a popular product that's hard to monetize. That being said, I wonder if any of the Twitter execs who think of this stuff actually use Twitter.
CrowFly··on My simplified response to Paul Graham's simplified essay
When I read Graham's original essay I laughed. In my mind, he's a force for greater wealth _equality_. After all, he takes money from rich investors and puts it into startup companies, the majority of which do not produce great wealth.
CrowFly··on Many See I.R.S. Penalties as More Affordable Than Health Insurance
I don't know. I think the stories from people who are actually trying to use the ACA should bear a lot of weight.
