CyanBird··on Wind farms can offset their emissions within two years, new study shows
The blades could easily be cut and used as modern "sleek" housing, or games for kids in parks

There is market for that I feel

CyanBird··on Study suggests a 'dark mirror' universe within ours where atoms failed to form
Same in actual cosmology, it is called the holographic principle. The concept is that 3D bodies can be losslessly represented on a distant 2D plane which envelops them or alongside the spherical perimeter of a black hole if they are squished to it

It is not all that applicable, but it is interesting to think about and there are people studying it

CyanBird··on Owning SpaceX's Starship Rockets Could Be in Department of Defense's Future
Interesting future the one mentioned where the US military could use SpaceX starships to do isle hopping on the pacific in not a dissimilar way that they did during wwii

If there is any military that could do it it might be the US military

I am interested on the logistics of fuel procurement tho, the fact that starship uses liquefied natural gas and oxygen makes for a great mix and rather simple to procure vs other rocket fuels

CyanBird··on YouTube started slowing video buffer with adblock enabled
Sucks that YouTube music is not integrated enough to YouTube proper, the discovery systems between both are also just bad
CyanBird··on Jodorowsky's Dune – Official Trailer HD (2014)
Parts of it yeah

There are some Google drive links with compiled art of the movie

2 years ago or so there was a push by an nft group with fair amount of money to purchase a copy of the dune storybook by jodo that they released to studios....

But it was not meant to be, you might be able to read of it on the web

CyanBird··on iPhone that fell from hole in Alaska 737 MAX flight is found, still open to Mail
Likely because the aim is to find the actual owner of the phone?
CyanBird··on FAA orders grounding of more than 170 Boeing 737 Max 9s
> we have got laws

Of which as mentioned previously by Miraste/flight 261 regarding Alaska were not implemented clearly and cleanly given that the person who raised the alarm of ghr situation was fired and the situation continued onwards

Right now regarding boeing there are also boeing whistleblowers in new NGOs set up to police boeing malpractice... If only laws work and this weren't necessary, as boeing also has bribed faa staff to achieve their own objectives risking public safety

CyanBird··on The Dubious Economics of Deep-Sea Mining
And the counter argument to the "amount of area '' not being big ''" is that the zones that will be mined are precisely the richest in ecological interactions and less understood ones, they are the zones with underwater volcanic chimneys

If someone came and said that they want to drag mine/open pit mine the Yellowstone geysers bc of how rich they are with minerals and said as an argument "hey it is just a small part of the park!" I don't believe that many people would be inclined to accept that "argument"....

CyanBird··on The Dubious Economics of Deep-Sea Mining
I still find this whole thing absolutely idiotic given that there are absolutely colossal piles of cobalt, manganese etc left on the tailings of copper and silver mines through the world just waiting for being collected and processed... And you don't need to build specialty equipment to reach the seabed at all
CyanBird··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
Op said "sent a message to a friend", it made no reference to facebook

Gmail famously scans the user emails to sell the info to third parties and sell adds

Ought be noted that while WhatsApp to my knowledgeable doesn't carry such a clause. It would be idiotic beyond belief to be led to believe that Facebook doesn't do the exact same thing

CyanBird··on Man found guilty of child porn because he ran a Tor exit node
...

We'll figure it out in ten years or so after the eventual leaks happen

CyanBird··on Supermassive Dark Star candidates seen by JWST
Baryonic matter is not symmetrical with its antiparticles. I forget the percentage given that it is not my subfield, but it was very high, meaning the existing amount of matter is just a sliver of what was initially "created"/coagulated

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baryon_asymmetry

CyanBird··on Pocket gets worse the more you use it (2019)
Instead of pocket I just have a personal discord server where I organize all the neat links that I find online, I write a short intro or header and some keywords

Far easier to search and more instantly readable than pocket is

CyanBird··on Was Starship’s Stage Zero a Bad Pad?
There are old tweets of Musk stating that maybe having the pad be the way it was without diverted could be a mistake

This issue was a measured known risk for the team/leadership

CyanBird··on Artificial Intelligence Can’t Work Without Our Data. We Should Be Paid for It
Andrew Yang's focus groups and a/B testing stated that "freedom dividend" had better reception than UBI or any other phrasing, at least when it came to it being done in the US, it would be very interesting to see the outcomes in other countries
CyanBird··on Intermittent fasting is as effective as counting calories, new study finds
Not eating as a consequence of deep depression is not the same as not eating for personal choice
CyanBird··on The best place to drink is the emptiest bar in the city
Well then said cook/bartender will be judged by that
CyanBird··on Swiss capital city wants to test controlled sale of cocaine
Can you "just roll it back" tho?

I think the naivety with which drugs are discussed by the intelligentsia and petit bourgeoisie versus their real toll once normalized is impossibly dangerous at a societal level

Crack/paco/pasta base is *not* something to be played with, and it is ofc a direct easy to mass produce derivative cocaine with multiplies the profits of selling base cocaine itself...

CyanBird··on If you can’t tell a story about it, it isn’t real
This article refers to public messaging, not personal one to one discussions by specialized individuals with specialized training
CyanBird··on Linguists have identified a new English dialect that’s emerging in South Florida
> It's probably been like this for centuries

This is mentioned on the article linked

CyanBird··on I don't trust Signal
Let people make their own third party tools/readers and then let these arguments rot

The ball is on Signal's control, but they are clearly not caring to improve further, just stagnate so long as they have got control of it

CyanBird··on List one task, do it, cross it out
You need to check your own privileges

Not everyone has had the luxuries of your life, some people need to actually work hard to get somewhere in life

CyanBird··on Seagate hit with $300M penalty for selling sanctioned storage to Huawei
> China is not inherently hostile to the US

The US does not, and will not allow a "near peer" nation to exist, ever. It will use all the tools at its disposal to avoid that situation from ever happening, that's one of its own very core tenets for national security

Japan, China, Brazil, etc it does not matter if it's actually aggressive against the US or not

CyanBird··on Digital clutter: Learning to let go and stop hoarding terabytes
Last year I was digging through my archive and found my old Gom player installation folder from ~2011 or so and just got a blashback of when I modded the interphase of it to be Protoss themed when I would watch GSL streams on it!

Indeed the emotional value of said sometimes silly things can't be understated

CyanBird··on Solar Panels That Clean Themselves
Interesting situation with the example of the Sahara sand being used to experiment on the panels

These days it is quite common to find solar panels on lamp posts of well being areas near the Sahara and elsewhere in the world

My big question is how well might these patterned panels handle erosion... It would be no fun to the investors if one, two light or medium sandstorms after installation then the pattern becomes eroded and they ended up paying a +15% premium or wherever it ends up being for fancy laser etched solar panels

Ofc that edge case aside.... This will be very wonderful on most of the planet

CyanBird··on Microsoft fixes 5-year-old Defender bug, reducing Firefox-related CPU use by 75%
Because the target audience for the feature is not tech savvy people but common users whom won't know it exists until it is shown to them/might be intimidated to delve onto FF settings

If you are tech savvy, you are then expected to be able to "bear the burden" of turning the feature off if it bothers you

CyanBird··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
Why make verifiably false statements like this?

>...

> It isn’t clear that increasing interest rates will have any impact on lowering prices. The nascent resurgence in inflation being experienced across the world is primarily still due to supply chain disruptions. The mechanism by which rising interest rates are supposed to impact inflation is essentially by increasing unemployment, which weakens workers’ bargaining power and thus slows wage growth. But lowering wage growth won’t do anything to address supply side constraints or energy shortages, which are a driver of ‘cost-push’ rather than ‘demand-pull’ inflation.

> ...

> The trade-off for policy makers between creating jobs and wage growth, while simultaneously controlling inflation, goes back to a 1958 paper by economist William Phillips on the relationship between ‘Unemployment and the Rate of Change of Money Wage Rates in the United Kingdom, 1861-1957’, which became a cornerstone of macroeconomics. The paper identified the correlation between lower unemployment with higher inflation and vice-versa (see Figure 2).

The explanation for this relationship was that as unemployment decreased the ability of workers to bid for higher wages increased due to less competition in the labour market. Higher wages mean more income to spend on goods and services, which leads to prices going up. This is bad for net creditors and net savers, because the inflation cancels out the interest on savings. By contrast, workers and net borrowers benefit from rising wages and prices, as it allows them to pay off their debt more quickly, which is depreciating in real terms relative to their income.

https://tribunemag.co.uk/2021/11/bank-of-england-rishi-sunak...

Inflation is multifactorial, different types of disruption to the economic web cause different effects on it, the article then goes on to mention the overall lower wages on US and UK post Reagan Thatcher as case study for how labor and wage growth changes inflation rates

CyanBird··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
Sure, but the private jet usage is not exclusively to said high level meetings.... If it were, then the Oxfam piece above would be singing a quite different tune
CyanBird··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
The second niche as a rule of thumb pollutes-more-than-God already(0)

I am skeptical that lifting barriers to them polluting more would land any type of net benefit given that ultra-luxury products such as said jets don't tend to land outsized downstream advancements than let's say, funding basic sciences such as what Boeing or Airbus are already doing

(0) https://www.oxfam.org/en/press-releases/billionaire-emits-mi...

If it could be proved that things like faster private jets or faster planes could benefit in a sizeable and proportionate way to the general public, then yeah I would be in favor of this too, but as it stands I don't find the available info compelling, I'd rather them to pay more taxes

CyanBird··on Tell HN: Reddit removed i.reddit.com and reddit.com/.compact
I use rif, which used to be called reddit is fun an android third party app. For some legal reason more likely than not they changed the name to "rif is fun" so technically it is named "reddit is fun is fun"...

But yeah, it works very well, I have used it for many many years, and in the same vein if someone has got high recommendations to hn apps I am all ears, I have used materialistic for couple years but it has fallen short on more than a couple things and seems to not be updated anymore
