DHolzer··on 2D Vehicles
the classic ship feels great to control. It reminds me of flying FAO in Elite Dangerous. Thank you!
DHolzer··on OpenJev
i dont see it visually, but the text on the page reads like the model is bending over backwards to comply with the prompt. i have that same voice on my website too and i am going to get rid of that text asap.
DHolzer··on Born Against, or why hobby programming communities are against LLM usage
1.putting the "mostly" before "incompetent and arrogant asshole" really does nothing. you still called some undefined group of people assholes... i think that's generally uncalled for here on HN. 2.computer that lies might very well be a better programmer. I assume by better you mean it profuces correct and maintainable code, but there are a million ways to cut that cake in particular and i assume you are ignoring most other dimensions. 3. i tought myself coding for 10 years and then switched to professional work 5 years ago. it feels as if this was stolen from us. But its not - we never had any right to own and control this. times are changing, and while you might think you and all other devs have a moral high ground and can pop a can of beer and cheer anytime one of these supposed assholes messes up and would have been better off with a real programmer like yourself, you can do so from whatever new position you will find yourself in. Some part of what we call intelligence is "solved" and that leaves you with percieved morals and broken expectations - nothing more if you don't try to make something out of it. and i write thisw as much for you as i write it for myself to realize.
DHolzer··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2026)
Just wanted to let you know that I think your posting on the page is great. Communicating so clearly what the application process will look like and what your expectations are of the applicant is really appreciated. I haven't seen that done a lot in Vienna.
DHolzer··on Show HN: Cerno – CAPTCHA that targets LLM reasoning, not human biology
like the idea, but i cant see what i'm doing when my finger coveres the screen
DHolzer··on Why I love NixOS
I switched over to Nix about a year ago. I was a Windows user before that for 30 years and tried Linux a couple of times, but it never stuck. Now I know I will never touch Windows again. With NixOS I've finally found a system that actually works for me — and the full OS configuration is in a repo. My god, I love it so much. Sometimes I even prefer nix-shells over uv for quick one-off Python scripts. I cannot sufficiently convey how absolutely barbaric everything else feels in comparison. Not having Nix would be like having to work on code without Git — absolutely unacceptable. And it really isn't that much work — you do it once. The next time you set up a new system, without Nix, you'll have to do the full configuration all over again.
DHolzer··on $96 3D-printed rocket that recalculates its mid-air trajectory using a $5 sensor
i don't like the framing of $96 that pops up with this topic. There are so many reasons why the pricing point is completely irrelevant. Yet it frames it as if it were a similarly helpful option to fpv drones for the underdog nation - It's not, nor would it be if it were $9.60 or $0.96. This launcher has not even hit a PoC state - to mention the production cost of the prototype at this point is an extremely weak talking point - it means nothing.
DHolzer··on Jolla phone – a full-stack European alternative
another adhd guy here. I haven't tried it, so i can't vouch for it to any degree of certainty, but maybe it's an option to have your main payment card in a sleeve inside your phone case? Even if it works, it's only a drop in the bucket, but maybe that's enough if you consider the lack of NFC payment a major issue. thank you for pushing for an alternative to android and apple
DHolzer··on Shatner is making an album with 35 metal icons
I have to say, the brass arrangement is pretty good - would have loved to be there when they recorded that staccato part.
DHolzer··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
I did not mean to imply that you did not face any consequences. Sorry if that came across that way. But my point stands. While I heavily disagree with almost everything Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, etc. stand for, I cannot hold the developers in these companies to the same level of judgment as I would politicians, lobbyists, and managers. You may compare selling heroin on the street to whatever stuff is going on at these companies, and I might agree or disagree. But the fact is — selling heroin on the street is illegal, while training a recommendation model is not. Quite the opposite. And the complacency and failure to put reins on this situation 15 years ago is a deep failure of our civilization. As long as we train people at university for these positions and pull them in with such incredibly high salaries, I can't not forgive them to a large degree. I do not forgive the policymakers that enable this madness, however. I understand that's just moving the blame to a higher level — that's not the intention. It's a systemic failure, and it needs systemic change.
DHolzer··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
look, i dont want to work at any of those companies anyway. I am with you - i was trying to say that money can break most of us. I appreciate you being so farsighted by leaving such a position, but for many other people that would be unthinkable - And that does not make them monsters.

At this point I would be more worried about working for a US company, than which one exactly - (not totally serious of course, but also not entirely inaccurate)

DHolzer··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
I would feel embarrassed, yes. But that's 5 times my current salary for a 'similar' position. I am not sure it'd be 5 times worse in terms of societal effect. And even if it were, I am not sure I would be 5 times as embarrassed, if we are considering a linear conversion rate.

What I am trying to say is that I am on your side - as of this moment it is incredibly unlikely that I would ever see this kind of money. That makes it an easy position to take in a online conversation. But I have seen decent people throw out morals for a 100th of what we are talking about.

DHolzer··on Jury told that Meta, Google 'engineered addiction' at landmark US trial
250k per year would make me reconfigure my internal right/wrong classifier real fast...
DHolzer··on Fahrplan – 39C3
The user had more arguments than just "it's all politics". What level of scrutiny does his statement have to hold up to? Because as far as I am concerned this is not here to find scientific truths.
DHolzer··on Fire destroys S. Korean government's cloud storage system, no backups available
Please provide any proof or references to what you are claiming.
DHolzer··on Helium Browser
I would hate to have a 40px title bar doing nothing except wasting space on my screen. I've been using this layout for years, and I didn't even consider that anyone could have an issue with this until I read your statement.

I'm not saying that you are wrong to disregard it due to your personal preferences, but please consider that this might not be such a horrible design as you make it out to be. Also, you can be certain that you are not the only sane person left - I think it's just that most of them don't show up on boards and forums.

DHolzer··on A chip 10,000x more energy efficient than GPU – Trevor McCourt, Extropic [video]
An interesting and short talk about what Extropic is currently working on.
DHolzer··on Chatterbox TTS
I love chatterbox, it's my favourite. While the generation speed is quick, i wonder what performance optimization i could try on my 3090 to improve throughput. It's not quite enough for realtime.
DHolzer··on Is "The Phoenician Scheme" Wes Anderson's Most Emotional Film?

DHolzer··on Getting AI to write good SQL
how is that technological progress not fueling resource scarcity?
DHolzer··on Getting AI to write good SQL
without wanting to sound overly sceptical, what exactly makes you think it performs so much better compared to claude and chatgpt?

Is there any concrete example that makes it really obvious? I had no such success with it so far and i would really like to see the clear cut between the gemini and the others.

DHolzer··on Compressed music might be harmful to the ears
I see, yeah, i am repairing a 16 channel tape machine right now. it's really nice.

For me it's about the recording and mixing process itself. I have diagnosed ADHD and i have a really hard time to focus on the production when i am working on my PC. I dont commit, i always tweak and i dont really care about the big view of the song because there is always some detail i can polish for the next 3 hours.

On a mixer and tape, i can turn down the lights and just sit there and listen and record. I dont care about the analog sound, i dont care about the inherent noise, i only care about the fact that i can sit down and actually be write music. I can basically do it all without even opening my eyes.

DHolzer··on The first year of free-threaded Python
I was thinking that too. I am really not a professional developer though.

OFC it would be nice to just write python and everything would be 12x accelerated, but i don't see how there would not be any draw-backs that would interfere with what makes python so approachable.

DHolzer··on Compressed music might be harmful to the ears
what do you mean?

production is not distribution. also there are plenty of analog options to musicians if they want to go that route.

DHolzer··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
buying HDDs these days currently feels a little like navigating the dark web.
DHolzer··on EU member states agree first wave of retaliatory tariffs
a tax evading soft spot that is.
DHolzer··on Buy European Made. Support European Values
Sure, I really do agree and I didn't mean to romanticize the past. However, there was a time when the self-interests of the EU and the US overlapped much more than they do now. From your point of view, it might seem like nothing has changed dramatically, but from our perspective, it certainly has.

I've noticed this shift both in my professional life and personally. And I'm not talking about just eating up what the media spews in my face, but actual cold, hard and direct consequences I've had to deal with since Trump came into office.

DHolzer··on uv downloads overtake Poetry for Wagtail users
I recently checked out UV, and it's impressively fast. However, one challenge that keeps coming up is handling anything related to CUDA and Torch.

Last week, I started developing directly in PyTorch containers using just pip and Docker. With GPU forwarding on Windows no longer being such a hassle, I'm really enjoying the setup. Still, I can’t shake the feeling that I might be overlooking something critical.

I’d love to hear what the HN crowd thinks about this type of env.

DHolzer··on Buy European Made. Support European Values
I don't see this as an attack, but rather a push for independence from the US. I don't want America to be irrelevant, but i don't feel like I can trust them as much as I did before. Both private and in business.
