DamonHD··on Ask HN: How will you invest now that the AI bubble is bursting?
I've been largely out of US assets since Trump was elected, and I am keeping a bit more in cash than I otherwise would, so I expect that to mitigate any falls (I expect ~30%). I aim to stay away from other than broad non-US index funds until the US/tech/AI situation is clearer.
DamonHD··on Free energy screening for run-of-river hydro power sites in North America
BTW, this is not just me grouching for lolz: I run this laptop primarily off-grid, so wasting energy for background fluff on your project seems a triple shame...
DamonHD··on Free energy screening for run-of-river hydro power sites in North America
That is better, but it still more than doubles power draw.

I am not a fan of huge background animations generally, because of bandwidth and power and distraction issues.

DamonHD··on Free energy screening for run-of-river hydro power sites in North America
That is a severely wasteful landing page, making my MBA M1 draw go up several fold, by 10W, and stutter horribly in low-power mode.
DamonHD··on High-Concurrency Crawler Optimization Notes – From 1 to 10000 QPS
Maybe don't rip off content and waste server bandwidth and CPU and feeds for stuff that can't even be saved and used? I see quite enough of those hitting my sites and have to pay a premium to avoid hitting bandwidth limits then keeping out my actual target audience.
DamonHD··on US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
My children have no middle name, and neither did I or my brother.

DamonHD··on Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half
Easy low-cost low-disruption insulation should be done, typically for the UK draft-proofing, and loft/cavity insulation.

But very high levels of insulation may never repay their carbon (and financial) cost when a home is heated with a heat-pump from a very low-carbon grid. It's the next part of my research programme: "understanding first" vs "fabric first".

DamonHD··on Ask HN: Help to lower AWS bill: CloudFront requests for files that don't exist
(Not for me, but I'd like to hear any answers too...)
DamonHD··on JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases
Ditto
DamonHD··on Do solar farms threaten arable land in Scotland?
A mix of uncorrelated or anti-correlated sources is good, so some solar in the mix is good, optimally a smaller solar fraction in Dunbartonshire than in Devon.
DamonHD··on Do solar farms threaten arable land in Scotland?
But golf clubs are apparently OK.

(ALL of the UK's projected solar PV generation needs could be fitted into existing gold courses with plenty left over, AFAIK. I do not know if that holds for Scotland by itself, but there was no shortage of golfing close to where I used to live...)

DamonHD··on Google Search is down
Up in London UK.
DamonHD··on AI Makes Your DRM Irrelevant
Contrast is too low for me to read it comfortably. The WAVE tool confirms contrast problems...
DamonHD··on Ask HN: Do you still own a printer?
Yes, an Epson EcoTank.
DamonHD··on Show HN: I built a vacation optimizer and later found out tools like this exist
Possibly edit your title to start with Show HN:
DamonHD··on Why should I have to pay more for buses if I don't use a smartphone?
in London the 60+ Oyster Card is free to use on many forms of London public transport (outside morning peak) but is very much not free: ~£40 set up fee and an annual fee until age 65.
DamonHD··on UK: Comparing fuel pumps to electric vehicle public chargers
(Spoiler: there are now far more of the latter in the UK!)
DamonHD··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
Ah, very good!
DamonHD··on Silicon solar cells could cut satellite power costs by up to 90%
Woot! All this is doing on within a short walk of where I am right now!
DamonHD··on Stripe Withholding Balance of $100000
Only giving out a first name is entirely normal to protect staff from malicious activity, eg doxxing and harassment, and if you have recorded the times of your calls should be entirely enough to legally identify those staff members in court if required. (You are noting the times of your calls to them and their approximate content?)

At this stage with an unusual flow of money of that order into your account Stripe is likely obliged to consider Anti Money Laundering and similar investigations for a start, and delay to handing on the cash is likely its main risk reduction tool at this moment.

DamonHD··on Ask HN: Why did my search engine post get removed?
I can see a submission from you about SE from ~1h ago.
DamonHD··on Ask HN: Is JavaScript as insecure as ActiveX was at the peak?
No.

Microsoft was utterly reckless with ActiveX (as with much of their other tech) as I see things, whereas JS has had a lot of attention from people who care and know what they are doing.

DamonHD··on Ask HN: What would be a genuinely fun interview process?
I've hired at least a couple of people at semi-social occasions, ie over a pint, the last two IIRC being data scientists.

That was enjoyable for all parties I hope, and a bit weird: a mathematician/quant coworker that I hadn't seen for many years happened to be at the bar so I got him to improvise a couple of questions!

DamonHD··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for the rest of 2026?
I predict a LOT more complaining about AI, justified or not!
DamonHD··on Ask HN: Is Google Search Down?

DamonHD··on Octopus Energy: use less electricity during solar eclipse

DamonHD··on How Americans view capitalism, socialism and free enterprise
I don't see how a shared currency (between poor and rich states, with the subsidy flows that implies), a national air-traffic control system and the interstates, amongst many other features, are not "socialism".
DamonHD··on Britain will soon be Europe's energy powerhouse
Fails to mention the existential consequences of continuing with the 'oil' and 'gas' choices: wind and gas (and nukes) aren't just nice-to-have menu entries in an energy system...
DamonHD··on What's That Burning Smell?
I periodically re-tighten such connections in my much-lower-powered off-grid system. 10A is the most I expect to see in any part of mine. I have had overheats from poor connections.
