Datenstrom··on Ncomm – A node-based robotics framework written in Rust
This was exactly my experience. We used DDS for our non-ROS parts but ROS2 was experimental at the time so we ended up needing to build bridges for everything that was ROS. Brining in even a single ROS package to not have to reinvent things was a huge pain point and ROS had issues where it couldn't be used across everything.

Datenstrom··on Should GitHub be sued for training Copilot on GPL code?
GitHub should not be sued for training on the data, but anyone using it should be liable for any copyright infringements it generates. That would effectively make it useless for business use cases, but it should be until the models understand copyright and plagiarism, which they do not yet.
Datenstrom··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
Web development usually involves very little CS it is much closer to Software Engineering. Computer Science about solving problems with math, science, and computation theory and just happens to use computers as tools. Software Engineering is about building complete and useful programs.
Datenstrom··on Purdue Starts Comprehensive Semiconductor Degree Programs in U.S.
Software engineering should really be separated from CS anywhere it isn't.
Datenstrom··on “I think the vast majority of developers still debug using print() statements”
My bespoke tooling does not require anyone else to use it to navigate or learn any project unlike some IDEs which is the biggest problem with them.
Datenstrom··on Starting over when you think it’s too late
There are also a number of companies doing things like computer vision to optimize crops, robotics for automating vertical farming, etc.

Datenstrom··on “I think the vast majority of developers still debug using print() statements”
Name one thing an IDE can do that I can't do with my (Turing complete) editor and shell.
Datenstrom··on The Linux cheat command
Definitely switch to zsh for interactive use, the differences are minimal enough it will not take any effort to switch. Even forgetting everything else just the superior tab complete is enough to make it worthwhile. Still use bash for scripts they will be more portable.

Sometimes mods tag stories that are interesting but don't get much attention for a "second chance" or so I've heard, maybe that is it.
Datenstrom··on Show HN: An open source alternative to Evernote (Self Hosted)
Can second this I love Zotero. I only use it for research papers, e-books, and notes about them and I don't use it for personal notes or saving snipits of websites and such but I could see it also working well for that.

Found this thanks to HN and have been really enjoying it for work and study music over the last month. It's hard to keep a good playlist that doesn't get stale, anyone have other stations? I also use Music for Programming[1] and various lofi playlists often.

Datenstrom··on Ask HN: Any Good Make Alternatives?
No real concerns it would work perfectly, just this project isn't anything really important so trying something new is low risk. I do just enjoy trying new tools people develop in general too even if they aren't battle tested enough to use in production, I'm also that way about at least test driving new languages.

There have been quite a few newer versions of CLI tools recently a few of which have some good quality of life and/or performance improvements so was just wondering if there were any new takes on Make or build systems.

But yeah, I am also not a fan of the syntax and tabs although vim makes using tabs pretty transparent for me.

Datenstrom··on Ask HN: Any Good Make Alternatives?
.devcontainer looks interesting that is a new take, I'm pretty stuck on my heavily modified vim though.

I played around with Nix a lot a few years ago but dropped it when I started needing to do non-trivial things often for packages that weren't available. It was just too much but I love their philosophy. Wish they wouldn't have used a DSL.

Datenstrom··on Ask HN: Any Good Make Alternatives?
Wow thanks! This is a really cool and looks perfect for my use case.
Datenstrom··on Google has banned the training of deepfakes in Colab
I'd be shocked if they weren't, it seems like a totally standard big corp playbook move. It would be the same exact thing Amazon was doing with their independent seller data[1].

Maybe governance simulation can be worked into some standardized test for basic competence for lawmakers. Or is that not democratic?
Datenstrom··on Major discoveries made by mathematicians past age 50 (2010)
For pure math you certainly need a knack for math, not so for Science in general though with notable cases like Faraday.
Datenstrom··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
In my personal experience it certainly played a major role. I've had gun safety and respect drilled into me so deep since I was a small child the most powerful cringe reaction I can possibly experience can only be triggered by someone mishandling weapons. Unfortunately it also happens when I see it in movies. At least that is what I attribute it to, I have never stuck around anyone I've seen mishandling or even talking about mishandling weapons long enough to learn anything about them.

I've certainly met plenty of women that could teach their sons the same principles though so I don't think fatherhood is a hard requirement.

Edit: Not commenting about male violence just respect for and proper handling of firearms in general.

Datenstrom··on Star Citizen (2015)
I don't want anything to do with the drama... but I backed a while ago and only just played the first time last fall for about 2 months and I've already got my monies worth. If you can make it past the rough edges there are already magical moments not available anywhere else available in the game and I can't wait to see what they do in the future.

Recently Jackfrags who I watch cover FPS games on youtube played it and my reaction was similar.

Datenstrom··on ‘I’m not a leak.’ Scientific careers aren’t a ‘pipeline,’: economists
Anecdote here, but I think it speaks to academia holding a privileged role in society and contributing little (or damage in this case) when I have met multiple people with degrees (but from a degree mill) who make > $200k as software engineers and can barely code fizz buzz and cannot even properly package a cli tool.

Although this is a specific problem with degree mills not representative of all schools.

Datenstrom··on Where are the low level system engineers?
Similar story here. Have lots of experience with low-level scientific compute, ML, and network code in specialized environments like avionics and robotics. I have used Rust in production so it is listed on my skills, but mostly C/C++ and of course Python for prototyping.

Recruiters saw Rust and I got blockchain spam. Nope.

I've moved on to my own thing anyway, but I've still had to put an explicit "no crypto/blockchain" everywhere they might look.

Datenstrom··on Andrew Ng: Unbiggen AI
> simply saying "we should make this better thing" isn't enough.

Besides the references to his company which has customers and a product that already works on these principles the literature currently shows that this is very much possible if you dig into the correct niches. Besides the SOTA in few-shot and meta-learning it is possible to smartly choose the correct few samples for the network that yield the same results.

It has also been my primary focus for the past 5 years and the core of the company I founded.

Datenstrom··on Ask HN: Do you watch streams (on Twitch, etc.)?
Same, I only recently started watching twitch for the SplitGate pro series (an FPS game with portals). And I really only started watching it because I really love the game and started finding myself in ranked lobbies with pros. I'm not as good as them and don't have the time to be but I can hang. This got me into some other SplitGate streamers occasionally but I doubt I'll get into it much more than that.
Datenstrom··on Portal 2: Desolation is giving the classic puzzle game a graphics overhaul
I haven't seen any of the usual shady f2p dark patterns which is another reason I've stuck around Splitgate for a while. It was refreshing and honestly I was getting really tired of games predatory approaches. The community has really been great too, I haven't ever really hung around a games discord/twitch/community events before. There are "supercustom" events every weekend where people get together to play curated community maps which has been great but also from the variety there makes me think the game has barely even started tapping the potential they could have with non-traditional arena maps enabled by the portal mechanics.
Datenstrom··on Portal 2: Desolation is giving the classic puzzle game a graphics overhaul
Tangentially, my main game for almost the past year has been Splitgate which is heavily inspired by Portal (and Halo). If you like portal and arena shooters it is definitely worth a try.

At the top competitive level especially having Portals in a FPS makes for interesting, intense, and fast paced games. It also makes camping essentially impossible.
