Detrytus··on US tech giants' hidden AI debt swells 90% to $3.2T in 6 months
Well, it can trigger the next financial crisis either way. Because now that spending is on the books of two companies: xAI, as a projected income, and Anthropic, as an external investment[1] that justifies their overblown valuation. Now, if Anthropic decides to get out of that deal, then the stocks of both Anthropic and xAI will crash, possibly triggering a wider market crash.

[1] it is an investment because I think xAI agreed to sell their compute infrastructure well below market price.

Detrytus··on US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
They did not necessarily forget the rule, it’s just inconvenience, especially when dealing with official business, when you have to explain why (for example) your kid’s last name is slightly different than yours.
Detrytus··on Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest
Yeah, imagine the joy of chasing your dinner through savannah with nothing but a pointy stick. Feel free to do that, btw, but I will stick to living in a civilized society.
Detrytus··on Container ship sinks in Strait of Hormuz as Iran steps up attacks
That's another funny consequence of this conflict: Trump is proud of himself, because he thinks lower exports hurt China, while US oil companies are making record profits. In reality: China's oil reserves are so huge they can last really long time, while their speed up their transformation to renewable energy.
Detrytus··on Container ship sinks in Strait of Hormuz as Iran steps up attacks
Not sure about this ship, but US Navy shot plenty of civilian ships, those associated with Iran. At this point US isn't even trying to pretend their actions are lawful, by going to UN and trying to pass some resolution against Iran, they are just "we do not like Iran, so we'll strike their ships". But when Iran does the same MAGAs suddenly remember that international law exists.
Detrytus··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
But Russia is not a member of ICC. So, ICC going after Putin contradicts the logic from your earlier post in this thread. It's not 125 countries agreeing to police each other, it's them going after a country outside their own group.
Detrytus··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
The point of the United States of America is to take care of its citizens. A "better qualified brown person" has their own country where they can apply for jobs without any restrictions. Them coming to US is a privilege, not a right. And I say it as H-1B visa holder from Europe.
Detrytus··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Prevailing wage itself is a scam. I'm not sure how government comes with those values but they are comicaly low.
Detrytus··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Well, India and China have 1.5B people each. Even if people there were actually less talented than in the US (as a percentage of people passing some bar), you would still expect the absolute number of applications from those countries to be high.
Detrytus··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
But you need an employer filing petition on your behalf. That's the fucked up part. It should be like in any other country: If you have lived in the US for at least 5 years (assuming you got here legally), you should be able to file a green card petition, or even directly apply for citizenship yourself, without your employer even knowing.
Detrytus··on Anthropic tried to persuade Pope that AI could be conscious being
In Terry Pratchett's "Long Earth" there was a superintelligent AI that got legal recognition as a person by claiming to be reincarnation of some Tibetan monk that happened to die at the exact second when that AI was first turned on :)
Detrytus··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
No. Per-mile just means “per 1000 parts” just like per-cent means „per 100 parts”
Detrytus··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
No, you won't have a skyscrapers in some random village in the middle of nowhere. But maybe the land owner, seeing how high is the LVT tax is, decides to build a 5-stories apartment building with 50 units, instead of 5 single family homes. And that's a win.
Detrytus··on The Real Luxuries In Life
The cynic in me thinks: most of the things on that list are most easily acquired if you have money.
Detrytus··on What we want is a hunter gatherer lifestyle with space age tools (2022)
Yes, but the size of community matters. In a 100 people tribe everybody knows everyone else. In 1M city most people are strangers, a.k.a. competitors, enemies even.
Detrytus··on 9th Circuit sides with states in Kalshi gambling fight
and why would he do that? It is an actual title of the linked article.
Detrytus··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
This is a top-level example but you do not have to look at the top, really. The whole private insurance system is a scam at every level. I mean: I immigrated to US couple years ago, and I can tell you that any hospital visit, or a diagnostics, such as CT scan or ultrasound are 15-20x more expensive here than in my home country (which is in the EU).

Funny thing is: if you tell the hospital that you do not have an insurance they will charge you a price that actually sounds reasonable, say $700 for a CT scan (which is still like 2x more than in my home country, but then the US is a high cost of living place), but if you do have insurance they will try to extort as much money as possible from your insurer: initial bill will be like $10k, and then they will settle for, say, $6k.

Detrytus··on Abdominal fat predicts heart disease risk better than BMI
The problem is: average person is bad at counting calories. They overestimate number of calories burnt, and severely underestimate number of calories consumed. Once you get your math right and get into real, not imaginary calorie deficit you'll start losing weight. Rule of thumb: whatever you think the amount of calories is in your current meal, double your estimate.
Detrytus··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
The main thing they should correct for is "how much China and Russia want them dead, and can they make it look like a suicide"?
Detrytus··on Zluda 6 release (run unmodified CUDA applications on non-Nvidia GPUs)
Isn't this tool directly violating NVIDIA license terms? I thought they disallow running CUDA on non-NVIDIA hardware. Or is it just because there's no money for NVIDIA in suing poor, Eastern European programmer?
Detrytus··on Supreme Court takes sledgehammer to federal regulatory structure
> 4. Congress may regulate money in politics;

This one is completely useless. Congress may regulate, but why would they? They directly benefit from more money in politics.

If anything this should be more direct, and read: "Political donations may only come from individual US citizens, and cannot exceed the amount of monthly minimum wage per person, per year".

Or maybe just add a field in the tax return form where anyone can name a party to receive some fixed amount donation, subtracted from person's taxes.

Detrytus··on Apple to skip high-end M6 Mac chips in favor of AI-focused M7 line
Everyone seems to miss it but the article also says that M5 Ultra Mac Studio is coming out later this year. Yay!

I wonder how much the rumored 768GB RAM version will cost.

Detrytus··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
Taller players do great in soccer, to a point. I mean, goalkeepers are the tallest, typically, about 6'4, 6'5. For field players, they usually max out around 6'3, but that's only for certain specialized positions like a striker, or central defender. Above that and you are too big and too slow, smaller players will quite literally run circles around you. I think overall average height of soccer player is below 6 feet.

Lionel Messi, the greatest soccer player of all time is only 5'7 - that should tell you something.

Detrytus··on Why isn't the U.S. better at soccer?
Well, nfl/nba are focused on big guys, 6’3 and above. In soccer your height/mass doesn’t matter much so the talent pools don’t overlap. And baseball is the old man’s game that does not require any athleticism at all.
Detrytus··on EU fines Temu €200M for allowing sale of illegal products
> We have a good example with incandescent light bulbs. I don’t know anyone who has attempted to violate the ban on home incandescent light bulbs.

Funny, because I remember that when this ban was first introduced in my country there actually was a black market for incandescent light bulbs. Some stores would keep selling them as “special purpose” or “vibration-resistant”. It only ended when LED bulbs appeared on the market, because they are strictly superior product (not like fluorescent ones EU tried to promote earlier)

Detrytus··on Samsung chip workers will get an average $340k bonus as AI profits soar
Well, I can give you Russian oligarchs - they came to their wealth during time of chaos, and mostly through stealing. But Texan oil billionaires? They won their wealth fair and square, if not for anything else then for just recognizing an opportunity and acting on it. Believe me, there are many people in this world who would blew it in stupid ways.
Detrytus··on Samsung chip workers will get an average $340k bonus as AI profits soar
Yes, and the contributions from those parents were so valuable that the society still owes them, even long after their death. That's why we pay our dues to their children and grandchildren.
Detrytus··on Waymo pauses Atlanta service as its robotaxis keep driving into floods
>If a child is "folded in half" by someone looking at their phone, no one accepts that as "good enough"

But of course we do. Yes, we punish the individual driver that did it, but we still allow humans to drive cars. We accept the fact that driving a car carries sone risks, but we value the convenience of getting to our destination easily more than we value lives of those kids that will get killed from time to time.

Detrytus··on Nvidia commits $90B to AI deals
So they are going to buy their own products to boost sales? Shouldn’t that be illegal or something?
Detrytus··on Japan Team Successfully Test Engine for Mach 5 Aircraft, Eyeing 2HR Trip to US
Airplane cost to operate is fuel consumption, and, by the laws of physic, aerodynamic resistance scales as a square of speed, so you can’t really work around it unless you invent some new laws of physics.
