DoingIsLearning··on Nearly 2M metric tons of wild fish used to feed Norwegian farmed salmon annually
> I have never eaten a farmed fish and I do not intend to, ever.

The probably is accurately knowing in order to make an informed choice.

Naively I assumed certain species were likely to be farmed. But nowadays the advancements in aquaculture mean that more and more species can be farmed. Even Tuna and Cod can be captured small and grown to a larger size in captivity.

My main concern is the health unknowns around feeding incenerated fish carcasses to fish that should be eating bottom of the ocean sealife and vegetation. It intuitevely takes me back to the 'mad cow disease' epidemic, with cow feed made out of slaughter house carcasses.

I would add one more category.

Beyond the in-office and the N-days-a-week-hybrid, you have within _actual_ remote roles:

- Country remote (mostly for taxation/regulatory)

- Time zone remote (remote first companies but constraint to within 2 or 3 hours of HQ time zone)

- Anywhere remote (actual remote but often as a contractor or EoR)

DoingIsLearning··on How automotive radar measures the velocity of objects
Great walk through, thanks for sharing!
DoingIsLearning··on How automotive radar measures the velocity of objects
I really like the figures in this and the previous entry:

If the author is here I would be curious to know your process and tools to generate the graphs and figures?

DoingIsLearning··on Indonesia’s Emergence
The atrocities carried by Indonesians to Indonesians slip through your comments. The religious persecution of non-muslims in Papua and Bali, and the literal genocide in East Timour.

Reminder that the "pacification campaigns" genocide carried out by Indonesian military on East Timour _civilians_ only seized in 1999 (25 years ago) after UN peace forces intervention.

In 1991, Indonesian soldiers opened fire on a peaceful crowd of 2500 people gathering at a memorial mass Santa Cruz Cemitery. It is documented that at least 250 people were killed point blank.

It takes a very special kind of evil to open fire on a packed crowd of unarmed civilians at a memorial mass. Their only crime was carrying FRETILIN resistance flag and being Catholic in a muslim majority country.

Before whataboutism accusation, I agree that former colonists should own their mistakes. But equally it is up to a People to take care of their People and not keep pointing to the past for blame.

DoingIsLearning··on Formal methods: Just good engineering practice?
Is there formal methods 'tooling' similar to TLA+ that is more targeted to State Machine design and perhaps State Machine Replication?
DoingIsLearning··on Two ways to use an LED as a light sensor with Arduino
> Certainly looks like that motion sensor is turning the light on in the night uselessly.

Interesting read John but since no one brought it up you should be careful to assume the sensor is at fault.

Hypothetically the timestamps in the example (roughly 00:00 to 04:00) sound like a fine time for rodents to roam and many motion sensors will also trigger on our small mass friends. :)

DoingIsLearning··on EU to greenlight Chat Control tomorrow
How does something like this avoid false positives?

A pretty common example in my circle is parents taking pictures of baby rashes/pimples/blisters etc to send to family doctor or doctor friends.

It sounds like a situation where every parent with a toddler will end up on some list.

DoingIsLearning··on Mouth-based touchpad enables people living with paralysis to use computers
Seems to be the case for so many assistive technologies. It is even more frustrating considering how high impact some of these technologies are.

Do you have any insights on how this space could grow other than State Funding or Insurance policy changes?

DoingIsLearning··on Volvo to shift EV production to Europe to escape China tariffs
In China it is pay to play.

My previous company was very successful in the Chinese market. But to get pass regulatory hurdles in order to be allowed to sell there, they first had to sell off a fraction of the company to CIC

Nothing about it was ever explicit but the way things work was pretty clear.

DoingIsLearning··on Ask HN: Going low-level – what to learn next?
Unless you are working on firmware for the actual actuators I would argue that nowadays robotics is not that low level as OP is aiming for.
DoingIsLearning··on Rare and Amusing Insults, Volume 2
As much as I dislike the character, Boris's "great supine protoplasmic invertebrate jellies" will forever be up there in the insults hall of fame.
DoingIsLearning··on YOLOv5 on FPGA with Hailo-8 and 4 Pi Cameras
The ultrascale is definitely pricy for non-industry applications. The FPGA design is probably larger because of the 4x camera pipeline.

Perhaps with a single camera you could port this to fit on a Zynq 7000 footprint with something like a Pynq Z1 or Numato Styx, which are in the $250 hobbies price point for example.

DoingIsLearning··on Lisbon, a city dying from its own success
> Visitors now enter new stores made to look like old ones as the real ones disappear.

They managed to put in words exactly my feelings every time I revisit Lisbon's city centre.

DoingIsLearning··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
I would be happy with ANC with a doorbell passthrough. Missed a few package deliveries this way. But maybe that could also be achieved with a desktop notification.
DoingIsLearning··on I Miss BSD/Linux
> Debian: something I can trust, that gets out of my way, and changes slowly.

Wholeheartedly agree. Debian has won the distro wars in my opinion. Their massive effort in safety and not breaking things means I can use stable as a "it just works" tool and focus on my actual work/fun.

DoingIsLearning··on The Way We Are Building Event-Driven Applications Is Misguided
Interesting article Gilles (design patterns are fun!) but in the future maybe worth giving some form of disclosure in the comments.

DoingIsLearning··on Parents who are saying no to "extracurriculars"
There are big places in a lot of places :) My point is if your tests were harder the distribution bell would not be as 'inflated' and you would not have as many people in the high 90th percentile. Allowing you to still use those scores alone without all the performative arms race.

See for example the International Baccalaureate programme and their point system normal distribution with thousands of kids from around the globe.

DoingIsLearning··on Parents who are saying no to "extracurriculars"
> What would have been an impressive final-year project when I was in university is something high schoolers are churning out as a bare minimum. How do we ready our kids (who are competitive) for this if not by ensuring that they don't miss out any opprtunities?

This sounds US-centric, looking from the outside it appears that you tried so hard to not use tests and marks to rate students that you made it all about projects/volunteering which mostly benefit kids with a lot money and time support from parents. It very much looks like performative kabuki for admissions officers where teenagers have lost interest in building something for the sake of it.

Anywhere else in the world, bar the US and the rest of the Commonwealth, it is all about grades and having exams with normal distributions as the great equalizer. For all the pros and cons at least anything else you do in your spare time as a teen you do it without any external agenda. A 16 year old shouldn't be worried about how something will look like on their CV.

DoingIsLearning··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
I think for most folks in Europe it was between 23:00 and 03:00 CET yesterday.

Not sure what future forecasts are. I guess NOAA will probably have some prediction.

DoingIsLearning··on Most of Europe is glowing pink under the aurora
Still true now? In the netherlands hard to tell anything. Certainly nothing on the level of the Swiss pictures being shared.
DoingIsLearning··on Ask HN: Can Devin genuinely replace the roles of developers?
For seniors I think it depends on how much breadth you need. I find them very useful to explore/poke around new areas where I don't have domain knowledge. I agree that areas/problems that I worked in the past it just slows you down but as you move into more unknown territories they are kind of nice to have as a sparing partner.
DoingIsLearning··on Tesla's Autopilot, Full Self-Driving linked to 100s of crashes, deaths
Other manufacturers limit their features to more controlled environments in motorways. Tesla allows it in a lot more contexts of mixed traffic, road conditions etc.
DoingIsLearning··on From L3 to seL4: 20 years of L4 microkernels (2013) [video]
QNX predates the first L4 release by at least 10 years. Unless they had a major rewrite I wouldn't assume so.
DoingIsLearning··on Worldcoin hit with temporary ban in Spain over privacy concerns
They are targeting financially challenged kids in malls, with 100 euros worth of coin for associating an iris scan with their personal information. It is opportunistic mass data collection.

Even if lawful it is very much unethical and weaselly, on a par with loan sharks.

They have done this all throughout south america and have now reached Southern Europe.

DoingIsLearning··on 'Simply good' Chinese electric cars power ahead of inferior US rivals
Stupid market question I understand that China's volatile and the whole real estate situation.

But considering how much potential BYD has to steal EV lunch why is the stock price not been reflecting that?

It has been at least a trimester of news about 'traditional' auto makers slashing prices and asking for trade restrictions on BYD. I would expect NVIDIA levels of rally at this point on BYD's stock?

DoingIsLearning··on Alzheimer’s cases tied to no-longer-used medical procedure
Perhaps a first pass research question is:

Do people who undergo spinal, brain, retinal surgery have a higher incidence of Alzheimer when compared with the rest of the population?

Otherwise there is no point in chasing this "some other other protein behaving like a prion" avenue.

DoingIsLearning··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
Is delivery critical or just get it close enough to tissue in ROI?

Are we aiming to modify specific cells/layers? And what happens to adjacent tissue that is 'accidentally' modified?

Do you have any literature recommendations on the state of the art in Gene Therapy 'delivery' mechanisms/apparatus?

DoingIsLearning··on Exxon throws a fit over shareholders exercising their rights
It is unrealistic to think they would not be bailed out. Oil and gas have an intrinsic geopolitical value. What we need is to see a legitimate roadmap towards sunsetting both from companies and govs.
DoingIsLearning··on Exxon throws a fit over shareholders exercising their rights
I would love to see a chain reaction forming a collective of people with 'fuck you money' and just going around Oil&Gas and bully boards into basic human decency.
