DoingIsLearning··on American cars are huge and unsafe, but automakers don't want the simple solution
Most MPV's will have larger (and more useful) interior spaces than these warfare vehicles.

Auto makers have figured out how to push our buttons and buy larger and more wasteful vehicles in what is a de facto arms race on the public road.

DoingIsLearning··on The great cousin decline
Like most human related things there is no single cause.

I can't comment on Iceland.

However, South Korea has one of the most crushing work cultures in the world, with insane work hours. Most people are not even in a relationship yet alone with kids.

In Portugal you have a huge problem of disposable income. Median salaries are insanely low and stagnant when adjusted to COL. To the point that by now most former 'Iron Curtain' EU members have surpassed Portugal in workers income both adjusted and absolute.

DoingIsLearning··on Why are things expensive?
> a trend of people worrying about the price of things.

Rather dismissive.

There are whole chunks of the industrialized world struggling to afford basic necessities while working full time jobs. Calling it 'Worrying' is almost british levels of understatement.

DoingIsLearning··on “Yes” means “no”: The language of VCs
I feel like this a SV/California culture of 'conflict avoidance' and general pleasantry rather than something specific to VC culture. It just so happens that most big VC players are in California.
DoingIsLearning··on Electric eel’s zap can transfer genes to nearby animals
Is there some state of the art Handbook (Springer Taylor&Francis type) that you could recommend on physical methods of Transfection that goes into the physics of it?
DoingIsLearning··on Fake chips, I got stung
On this topic, is there anything like a 'chip forensics consulting service' out there?

Say if I find a batch from a scalper but I am not sure if it is genuine.

DoingIsLearning··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
Indeed it is!
DoingIsLearning··on D Programming Language
There is a D subset:

https://dlang.org/articles/safed.html

But nothing like Ada SPARK provability stuff, I don't think.

DoingIsLearning··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
I remember a blog post entry on HN of someone who turned their corner office/living room into some sunlight simulated thing with high candela bespoke bulbs. Maybe with the search at the bottom you will find it.
DoingIsLearning··on Lack of sunlight during the day is worse than electric lighting at night
A large fraction of UV radiation is blocked even by single pane glass.

If the 'health' benefit or bio signal for this effect, requires UV radiation then there is very little that can substitute being outside for 1 or 2 hours a day depending on the season.

DoingIsLearning··on Return to office is 'dead,' Stanford economist says
The clear agenda divide across different media platforms is interesting.

WSJ, Fortune, FT, all fall along the same line with opinions about all the cons of remote work, or all the virtues of RTO.

Whilst most online only newspapers fall along the opposite end of the spectrum.

Seems like a topic where everyone has made up their mind and will only accept data if it aligns with their world view.

DoingIsLearning··on Firefox for Android is adding support for 400 add-ons
No, the change to Phoenix happened with the 2020 stable release which is what intentionally broke add ons.
DoingIsLearning··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
EuroNCAP has a standardized 'Vulnerable Road User' (VRU) test protocol since at least 2012. [0]

This vehicle will absolutely fail every single specified test.

Anyone buying this should first come to terms with the fact that it is not a rational purchase, rather than trying to post-rationalize reasons to do so.

DoingIsLearning··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
Non-sarcastically one interesting Engineering aspect is the complete disregard for the last 30 years of lessons learned on Pedestrian Safety.
DoingIsLearning··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
> Pedestrians be dammed apparently. This is merica.

With that shape and with steel panels there is absolutely zero change of survival for pedestrians with this. You are hit, you are dead.

I thought the SUV mega monster trend was a huge setback in Vehicle Design but somehow Tesla found a way to surpass that.

We have set ourselves so far back. It will be decades into the future before we are able to reverse this reptilian brain meme of vehicle arm's race purchases'.

DoingIsLearning··on Firefox for Android is adding support for 400 add-ons
This is clearly someone who is not a user. Probably gave it a try 4 years ago made a list of dislikes, uninstalled, and stuck with the criticism.
DoingIsLearning··on Firefox for Android is adding support for 400 add-ons
I actually was a donor until 2020.

Not because of add-ons obviously but because of the Mozilla foundation mass layoffs with the MDN, Servo, Rust team, etc. The contrast of C-levels (of an open-source _foundation_) like Mitchell raking in +3M a year and the layoffs felt too hypocritical. The suits have taken over and they lost their mission.

I will not be donating to them until there is a clear way to make donations specifically for Developer payroll only.

DoingIsLearning··on Firefox for Android is adding support for 400 add-ons
The title is rather diplomatic.

I guess:

"Firefox for Android voluntary broke add-on support in 2020 and has now fixed it after 3 years of users and developers complaining about it"

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

I mean as a user I get the rationale for the rewrite and one step back two steps forward but it genuinely feels like Mozilla has prioritized just about everything else instead of this.

DoingIsLearning··on How Jensen Huang's Nvidia is powering the A.I. revolution
I see plenty of custom ASIC startups but they all struggle to get decent funding. Which means they are all one tape-out away from insolvency.

I don't really see NVIDIA's dominance changing (other than whatever AMD has in the pipeline) Unless VC's change their risk appetite and take interest in HW startup funding which seems unlikely considering the avg returns and success rate of HW startups.

DoingIsLearning··on Evaluating M3 Pro CPU Cores: General Performance
ARM at least has a clear reasoning for the letters:

M (Microcontroller), R (Real-time), and A (Application) core profiles.

DoingIsLearning··on Evaluating M3 Pro CPU Cores: General Performance
Slightly off topic but can't be the only one getting confused with Arm Cortex-M3's every time I read an Apple M3 headline. Why would they call a core the exact same name as another companies product?
DoingIsLearning··on My $500M Mars rover mistake
Off-topic but I never realized how much kapton tape is used to put these things together, until I saw these internal 'guts' photos.
DoingIsLearning··on Modern C++ Programming Course
Literally in the title of the linked page:

DoingIsLearning··on The first Spanish AI model earning up to €10k per month
Why?

I think it's liberating.

You have a whole generation of depressed teenagers comparing themselves with genetic lottery winners, filters, and photoshop edits.

If everything online can be fake, than nothing online is real, which means nobody is 'beautiful' unless I see them in real life.

Feels like coming back full circle.

DoingIsLearning··on YouTube is now blocking ad blockers so I make ads run faster
One example that comes to mind is Kagi.

They makes it a design point that Kagi should work even without javascript enabled.

DoingIsLearning··on Welding and the automation frontier
I get that when it matters they will examine and x ray joints etc. But still, it really is humbling/scary to think how dependent each of us is on someone else doing their job just right. So many instances across our lifetime, one mistake and you would not be here anymore.
DoingIsLearning··on Oculi Mundi collection of rare and ancient maps

DoingIsLearning··on Candela P-12 taking off – Electric hydrofoiling passenger vessel [video]
Control is the word you are looking for.

It is a _control_ system that takes sensor _inputs_ and _outputs_ hydrofoil tilt actuation.

It maybe controlled by undergraduate Control Theory or some secret sauce predictive model but making a claim in either direction is speculation.

DoingIsLearning··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
> has proven himself to be exceptional, part of which is (of course) being able to be seen as exceptional.

Off-topic and I am not proud to admit it but it took me a remarkably long time to come to realize this as an adult.

DoingIsLearning··on Earth likely briefly passed critical warming threshold on Friday and Saturday
The head of one of the world's biggest oil companies has been named to lead the COP28 global climate talks in Dubai, later this year. [0]

Hydrocarbon fuels will continue to lead the agenda and pace, read stiffle action, for climate emergency mitigation through lobbying and media narrative.

The end game is obvious but there is still a long runway of profit that can be extracted until it is no longer palitable for public opinion.

I see three possible tipping points:

- Climate change erodes US hegemony to a point that is no longer palitable to US national interests [1]

- People mass suing companies for climate damage in a magnitude that impacts the bottom line or charges C-levels criminally.

- Environmental groups start taking out Oil & Gas Board members and lobbyists, subsequent 'terror' precipitates an actual sunsetting.

At least the geometric shape building in America seems to be ahead of this in contingency plans for some tipping points.
