EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Feel like part of the issue is everyone’s self imposed neurosis about not intruding on others. My wife insists on not ever asking to come over to someone’s house - she only wants to be explicitly invited. We invite people over to our place when we can but this leads to us basically never visiting any of our friends because they aren’t the planning type.
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
I am sure you are aware that on a subconscious level the ads have an impact on you, even if you think you are actively “ignoring” them
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on So you want to use OpenRouter?
I wouldn’t blame openrouter, blame the providers that have lower quality of service than they should
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
I cannot see a meaningful difference at all in any of the example photos, so not really seeing what the point of this is.
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Code highlighting extension for Cursor AI used for $500k theft
clickbait title

it wasn't even a cursor specific extension it was a vscode one. completely misleading

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Do you trust Mark Zuckerberg to solve your loneliness with an 'AI friend'?
no
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Ground control to Major Trial
To be fair to them - they've been doing it for 10 years without a problem!
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Ground control to Major Trial
Isn't this a failure by the company to recognize free trial abuse sooner? and to not close the loophole immediately seems like even more of a weak behavior. Calling them out but not taking decisive action beyond claiming that they are acting immorally ultimately accomplishes nothing. Businesses are not beholden to your ideas about what is nice and fair, but whatever the rules and constraints are to your system. if you keep a practice like this that allows free trial abuse forever, why would they spend money?
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on As 'Bot' Students Continue to Flood In, Community Colleges Struggle to Respond
literally in the first few paragraphs of the linked article?
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Show HN: We made a Meta Quest3 see through walls
cool shit
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Two Grand Canyon-size valleys on far side of the moon formed within 10 minutes
extremely misleading headline implies that it just happened.
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
lol perfect
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Fixing the Loading in Myst IV: Revelation
Very good read! love detailed explanations on the "bad" original code and steps taken toward improving it. a lot of it comes down to personal preference and the author did a good job at respecting what might have been an intentional design decision with their optimizations by making it all configurable
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Missing open-source contributor presents a dilemma when accepting their PR
thought this would be a mystery about a coder who disappeared that surfaced via pull request
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on We shrunk our Javascript monorepo git size
better question - does the changelog need to be checked in the first place?
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Escaping the Chrome Sandbox Through DevTools
really sick writeup, felt like a thriller novel
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Good Retry, Bad Retry
can't imagine working at a company with so many competent team members.

fun narrative though!

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Remember That DNA You Gave 23andMe?
gdpr might help you with data in a web database or data warehouse but if they have anything outside of that you're still screwed. I doubt a failing company has the time, energy, or resources to comprehensively clean up your data everywhere. Definitely submit the request but don't expect it to prevent your info from being resold
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Tetris shows promise in reducing PTSD symptoms
somehow? curious what you consider to be real ptsd vs. what you consider the trauma that front line health care workers faced during one of the worst Healthcare crises of our lifetimes.
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on End of the librarian? Council cuts and new tech push profession to the brink
Realistically how much money are they even saving trying to cut librarians? They couldn't trim the fat somewhere else in the budget? Seems like a waste of time and money to try and "automate" this when they can find the funding elsewhere
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Patching requests for fun and (concurrent) profit
cool article! looks like the author's pr got marked for changes that were made and then the reviewer went on hiatus from reviewing more open source software so hopefully this actually gets added by another maintainer on the repo :(
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on A bullying scandal closed a historic astronomy department
problematic employees need to be fired as soon as possible or they ruin everything they touch
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Launch HN: Artie (YC S23) – Real time data replication to data warehouses
How many of these tools are out there? This is like the 4th CDC to Data warehouse tool I've seen this year and I'm struggling to understand why they all exist in parallel.

I just found estuary with a colleague yesterday which didn't work and previously have seen at least two other tools promising the same CDC to Data Warehouse in-a-box pipelines. What makes this tool different?

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Bugs that cost money
Read this submission and thought - this is the kind of thing dan luu would post on Twitter. Then I saw the submitter!

It's honestly incredible how companies will have issues with the most core fundamental way people are attempting to use their product and no one noticed. Being unable to check out is basically throwing money into a fire and I've had it happen all the time - I take my business elsewhere. People just don't give a shit about their job or what they're actually doing

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Modern data modeling: Start with the end?
And how do you manage the versioning and deployment of your views and mviews? What tooling do you use to refresh those materialized views on a schedule?

Is it something you've written and maintain yourself? What testing do you have on them?

I find that dbt answers all of these questions pretty simply in a way that avoids the need to reinvent the wheel. It's not some godlike piece of software, just a helpful framework wrapper around plain old SQL

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
KPInfor time spent browsing channel goes way up when users are forced to look for older content manually! Epic product manager win
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on A large collection of fraudulent web stores
What database are you referring to? Is there an international database for all businesses registered in every single country that everyone universally signs up for when they incorporate?
EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
One thing I haven't seen mentioned in the comments is that putting a phone case on the later generations of iPhones messes with the accuracy of the touch sensation of the screen. This inevitably leads to even more typo issues because you hit something "correctly" but the input is recognized incorrectly. Not sure if this impacts Android but definitely changed with iPhones

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Ask HN: How Does the NY Times Paywall Work?
https://open.nytimes.com/how-the-new-york-times-uses-machine...

They opensourced (some) of the logic used for how it works

EDEdDNEdDYFaN··on Rethinking Triplebyte
Interesting that they are effectively pivoting to do what Vettery (I guess now part of Hired) was already doing years ago.
