Errorcod3on The Four Most Common Evasive Techniques Used by Malware

Summary:

1. Environmental awareness allows malware samples to detect the underlying runtime environment of the system it is trying to infect.

2 .Confusing automated tools, allows malware to avoid detection by technologies such as signature-based antivirus software.

3. Timing-based evasion to run at certain times or following certain actions taken by the user.

4. Obfuscating internal data to include any number of tricks to run code that cannot be detected by the analysis system.

Errorcod3on Ask HN: What is the point of asking for references while making an job offer?

The purpose of providing references is to close the deal. It isn’t to find out if you are telling the truth about your dates of employment, verify if you have the proper skills or even assure the hiring authority he’s making the right decision to hire you -- though each reason contributes.

If a company is having difficulty deciding which of two individuals to make an offer to, references are usually the deciding factor. If more job seekers understood this, they wouldn’t view the phrase “references provided upon request” so casually.

Errorcod3on Threat Spotlight: TeslaCrypt – Decrypt It Yourself

TeslaCrypt, the latest-and-greatest ransomware branch off of the CryptoWall family, claims to the unwitting user that his/her documents are encrypted with "a unique public key generated for this computer". This coudn't be farther from truth. In actuality, the developers of this malware appear to have been lazy and implemented encryption using symmetric AES256 with a decryption key generated on the user's machine.

If any of your machines are afflicted, Talos has developed a tool that can be used to generate the user's machine's symmetric key and decrypt all of the ransomed files. (From citpyrc - Slashdot)

Errorcod3on We're stuck with passwords: Here's how to make them work better for you

I've seen this before.

For my easy to use / hard to guess passwords, I use patterns on the keyboard that are fast to type as well.

For example of a simple pattern keyboard password: !QAZ@WSX1qaz2wsx

The patterns can be done several ways in different directions/angles.

So some of the larger passwords that I will use may look like this: !Q@W#E$R%T^Y&U*I(O)P1q2w3e4r5t6y7u8i9o0p

Errorcod3on Recycling in America

America is way behind from living overseas for 3 years.

I have to pay extra to recycle, which I do not think is correct.

Should be more like some areas in Germany where you pay for the amount of trash you have(weight), the more you throw away the more you pay -> encourages recycling!

I also work for a brewery and it is sad that none will re-use bottles in the united states, all beer goes into brand new bottles :(
