ExpiredLink··on Tell HN: I was permanently banned from eBay in one hour
But the OP may not find it 'interesting'. I guess he told us only half of the story.
ExpiredLink··on NotepadNext: A cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
Wow, thank you! I'm still using Notepad2 from 2012.
ExpiredLink··on The Grayness of the Origin of Life
From a scientific point of view we can - not just will - never know the origin of life. Of course, popular science frames it differently.

Is it related to this viral story? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiLjTMVMkrg
ExpiredLink··on The History of Development of Norton Commander (2010)

ExpiredLink··on The rise of the pointless job
>> if no one had an army, armies would not be needed.

Lol, the US has an army because they need to attack other countries!

ExpiredLink··on Tech workers who are engineering a mid-30s retirement
Nonsense, I live in central Europe.
ExpiredLink··on Tech workers who are engineering a mid-30s retirement
> Where in Europe can you retire on 200k?

Albania, Kosovo, Moldova ...

ExpiredLink··on Getting Past the Dominance of the Nation State
The problem is not the "nation state" but nationalism.
ExpiredLink··on Ask HN: Why don't more open-source projects monetize?
It's the competition. Free as in Free and free as in free are better than free as in FREE TRIAL ACCOUNT.
ExpiredLink··on Show HN: Does it use Cloudflare?
news.ycombinator.com ... OMG!
ExpiredLink··on Why hasn't Haskell taken over the world? And the curious case of Go
A higher peak in the hype cycle.
ExpiredLink··on Ask HN: Any open-source project in need of a Technical Writer?
But what is a Technical Writer?
ExpiredLink··on JavaScript frameworks and topics to learn in 2017
Or wait another year and pick the winner of the JavaScript framework war. It's unlikely that we will see new and relevant(!) JS frameworks over the next few years as we have seen in the past. 20 - 25 years ago dozens of Windows frameworks appeared on the market. Eventually VB won. History is repeating itself.
ExpiredLink··on Why did ProtonMail vanish from Google search results for months?
That's not the point. You know why Google removed them from the search results.

ExpiredLink··on Why Philosophers Should Care About Computational Complexity (2011) [pdf]
Or is it rather that mathematicians should care about philosophy?
ExpiredLink··on A data-driven guide to creating successful HN posts (HN is similar to Reddit)
> So all in all, statistically, you can maximize your chances of getting a popular HN post by ...

It's the same in all groups. You get popular by posting content that conforms to the group-think and avoid content that doesn't. This leads to uniform, harmonic but also eventually uninteresting groups that sanction deviant behavior.

ExpiredLink··on The End of Software Versions
He probably confuses 'external' versions (APIs, contracts) and 'internal' versions (builds). Both are largely independent of each other.

ExpiredLink··on In Defence of Monoliths
> more than they worry about solving business problems.

That's why companies implement Agile. It's all about "solving business problems". No architecture, no design, no documentation (merely 'user stories'). Dump and re-write instead of maintain. All your problems solved!

ExpiredLink··on Work on stuff that matters, first principles (2009)
>> "Work on something that matters to you more than money."

> This is incredibly naive.

It is incredibly challenging - given the economic and social constraints of 'modern' life.

ExpiredLink··on A Language Is More Than a Language
I have no doubt that you cannot win the 'war' on the language front. All those bloggers, internet and conference luminaries that never write real-world production code miss the point. It's about the platform, the whole programming ecosystem not about 'beautiful' syntax. That's why Java - the platform (Java EE, Android, ...), not the language - won and is still going strong. New languages (D, Rust, ...) have not the ghost of a chance unless they are able to create a platform.
ExpiredLink··on $0.55 per watt from SolarCity’s new solar panel
> There's expected to be a solar panel shortage coming soon because the industry is growing so fast

The Chines companies haven't caused panel shortage in the past. Quite the contrary. They ruined many producers in Europe with their dumping prices.

ExpiredLink··on Ask HN: What stack would you use to build a CRUD web app on the JVM today?
