FabCH··on Show HN: OmniDiff – Opensource, super fast, content aware Git difftool, in Rust
I’m not based in the US so SCOTUS doesn’t set meaningful precedent for my IP.

That said, even under those rules, I would be comfortable arguing before the court that this code has significant human involvement and easily passes the copyright standard.

It’s also why I don’t think someone can just easily create another one and license it under BSD. My code is AI assisted, but all truly important pieces were human made.

I really do care about copyleft and AGPL. It’s a political choice. I specifically chose it because I know from direct experience that big tech is allergic to it.

I actually don’t care about the commercial license. It’s more of an experiment for my own amusement than an actual attempt at building a commercial project.

If it inspires someone to build another one and we still end up with a better differ, I’m ok with that world. As long as the open source community has a better differ.

Note that there already are at least 3 that I am aware of. But they do perform worse on speed and accuracy.

FabCH··on Show HN: OmniDiff – Opensource, super fast, content aware Git difftool, in Rust
Not quite.

In the meantime, I added support for all other non-code file formats. Hence the name change.

It’s quite a big chunk of functionality.

FabCH··on Show HN: OmniDiff – Opensource, super fast, content aware Git difftool, in Rust
It’s much much better with moved code.

Delta adds color to the standard git diff algorithm.

Omnidiff uses a completely different algorithm.

About a third of diffs are significantly better.

Note that only one country has so far banned foreigners from using their models, and it wasn’t China.
FabCH··on Show HN: TUI to manage firewall and HTTP server, in Rust
I personally use a VLAN where I segment all IoT and Smarthome devices and just drop all outgoing internet traffic at the switch level on those VLANs.

However, given the latest Plex exploit incident, I have been thinking how to detect and prevent outgoing anomalous connections…

FabCH··on Show HN: TUI to manage firewall and HTTP server, in Rust
It doesn't do Traefik at this time, because I didn't want to release something I don't test.

But I can do it if you want to beta-test it and file bugs if it doesn't work.

FabCH··on eBay Restricts Listings of Radio Equipment, but Exempts Ham-Band-Only Gear
To be fair to eBay, their banned items policy is quite extensive.

And also for some reason explicitly lists „military aircraft and ships“. Which surely should be allowed just for the comedic value.

FabCH··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
Exactly.

Secret Squirrels will obviously keep track of who wants to blow up Starlink, but they will not interfere unless it makes sense for the country.

Completely different than parking a tank preventively in front of each base station. Or even just a police car.

FabCH··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
A more appropriate comparison would be if Russian agents assassinated a local industrialist.

And, well, would you expect the state to proactively assign military protection details to such people?

No. They would have their own body guards, and maybe a police protection if needed. But not army.

The spy and counterspy agency would probably investigate, but they are not going to post a flak cannon next to each Starlink base station.

FabCH··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
In many countries, foreigners are not even allowed to buy property in the first place.

It’s not exactly uncommon or inconceivable that yes, the property of foreigners doesn’t quite get the same protections.

FabCH··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
Fair, but there is some standard for issuance as well. VAT rules and certificates of conformity are EU wide.

VAT I guess being the interesting part given the original topic.

FabCH··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
Not sure why you mentioned EU, but in case you didn’t know, the EU does in fact standardize license plates: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_vehicle_registration_...
FabCH··on So you think you could be an electrician?
That’s a thing in Switzerland - ITC EFZ.

Federal Certificate of Vocational Training in Information and Communication Technology

It’s a 4 year high-school apprenticeship and you have to work under a licensed professional during your apprenticeship during those 4 years.

I had such apprentices on my team. It’s a good system.

FabCH··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
What code does a village vet clinic need? In all seriousness.

Even IF they need code, they need at best a CRUD app to track patients, that's it. There is no way Fable or Opus 5.5 can't one-shot a village vet clinic app in 30 minutes, and only with "I need a village vet clinic app" as a prompt, and whatever questions it decides to ask along the way with it's "ask user" tool.

Or a florist, to use the example from a sibling comment.

Code is tiny part of "business".

Code is a tiny part of "business".

Most business is correspondence with people who want money from you and people you want money from.

FabCH··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
Don't get me wrong, we are all guilty of this.

It's just amazing how quickly we accept that models are good at something.

My florist boss can't get Claude to automate rose pruning. But she sure as hell doesn't need to wait until Jacques is back in the shop to respond to that French supplier anymore. There is a lot of "business tasks" that are just paper being shuffled around no matter if you are a florist, baker, workshop owner, custom CNC shop, student offering lessons in extra time or whatever. And LLMs are already scary good at those.

FabCH··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
Somewhat appropriate the site the OP links to is called „goalposts“ because as far as I can see, people keep shifting theirs.

In your case, the comment you link to says „business tasks“ and you expanded it now to „arbitrary new tasks“. Those are not the same. An LLM today sure can do many many many business-speak conversion tasks.

FabCH··on What makes software development engineering
AFAIK the actual reason why „Software Engineer“ is ok is because it’s in English.

Pretending to be an „Ingenieur“ is illegal unless you have the paper to back it up. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be a university paper, there are older trade papers that also work.

FabCH··on What makes software development engineering
FYI: Mechanical and hardware engineers, in the appropriate language of the country, are already protected engineering titles in a lot of European countries.

Calling yourself a „dipl. Ing. <X>“ would be a crime if you don’t possess the appropriate degree.

FabCH··on Tesla moves to electrify trucking after a decade of work and delays
Little late to the party there Elon.

Most trucks I pass on the road daily are already electric in my part of Europe. Seems like all the big European companies, especially Mercedes, are pushing them out the door as fast as they can.

FabCH··on Will Open Source Survive the Agents That Replaced It?
It shows opensource _usage_ will increase.
FabCH··on If AI coding is lowering your code quality, you're not managing quality right
This entire discussion can be summarized as:

LLMs have speed development up so much, the difference between engineers and programmers is becoming too obvious to ignore.

FabCH··on If AI coding is lowering your code quality, you're not managing quality right
Become an apprentice to one of those senior engineers with 30+ years of experience that is using it right.

We will have to adopt something that is normal in all other engineering disciplines. Just like civil engineers can’t sign off projects until they pass the exam and „years working for an engineer who can sign off on projects“ is an exam requirement.

FabCH··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
I guarantee you that the winning song will play on repeat over and over again in every city in Spain, the Netherlands and Ireland irrespective of if they are competing, and people will still watch the circus from those countries. The whole "well we are not competing this year as a protest" is part of the joke.

That is the whole point. If you want to understand more, this song is genuinely a good explanation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv6tgnx6jTQ

And I'm not even joking.

FabCH··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
There isn’t any. It was just a political statement from both sides that they are willing to give it a go, and broad lines were drawn.

There’s a meeting scheduled in Ottawa next month for the actual deal writing.

FabCH··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Because Eurovision is this cultural joke that unifies all of Europe in this yearly cultural moment of absolute madness.

And the EU treaties refuse to define what „European“ means, so using „watches Eurovision“ as a rule of thumb is surprisingly workable as a definition of where the borders of „Europe“ end.

FabCH··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Freedom of movement is more than just visa opt-out. It’s legally almost impossible for an EU country to prevent a citizen of a different EU country from moving there. They would need to arrest you for terrorism or something equally dramatic.

The ECJ has consistently ruled that the freedom of movement is very broad.

I know this because it creates an interesting corner case where Swiss citizens don’t have quite the same broad freedom of movement since ECJ rulings don’t automatically apply to non-EU citizens. For example, an EU citizen can move to Greece for no reason at all and just sit on a beach. A Swiss citizen cannot, and has to find work in 3-6 months or leave.

FabCH··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
You are confusing the current „candidate members“ with the new „associate member“ that doesn’t exist yet and is basically something Canada will get first.

Among other things, they mentioned „recognition of professional qualifications“ in their speeches today, which is the first step in freedom of movement, so the direction is there.

Also, visa free is a third thing, which already exists for Canada/EU. Neither needs a visa to travel to the other.
