FedRegister··on Popular and Free, SoundCloud Is Now Ready for Ads
Thank you for posting that.
FedRegister··on Popular and Free, SoundCloud Is Now Ready for Ads
How will this affect applications using your API? Roll20, for example, has SoundCloud integration to play music while a game is going on. Will ads play when music is triggered this way? If so, why would anyone continue to use this feature of Roll20?
FedRegister··on RMS at TEDx: Introduction to Free Software and the Liberation of Cyberspace
I found this video to much more informative about the issue of free software and hacker culture:

FedRegister··on Systemd 216 released including DNS resolver and full TTY stream parsing
It sounds more like they're trying to implement the *BSD userland in systemd so it's available on boot.

Coming soon to the systemd codebase: we'll be Katamari-ing all over busybox! When will we be big enough to absorb Wayland? Stay tuned!

FedRegister··on TripIt insecurely broadcasts sensitive travel details in calendar feeds
Murder for hire would be CAAS.
FedRegister··on NPR One
>It's nice that we have a source of news that is not beholden to advertisers or corporate interests (although the number of 'This content was made possible by donations from...' I hear at the end of the larger shows is a bit worrying).

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a thing, ain't it? The vast majority of NPR's funding comes from advertisers, excuse me, underwriters.

Edit: Well fuck me I'm wrong. Carry on, citizen.

FedRegister··on Stealing unencrypted SSH-agent keys from memory
>I wish SSH had a narrow kind of delegation capability... E.g. if instead of ssh-agent having access to the key, it used the key to sign a tuple like {time-limit, [host-ip], ephemeral_pubkey}, then forgot the private key, and used the ephemeral key to actually authenticate to hosts— but they'd only accept it from the listed host ip set and during the specified time limit.

So Kerberos? You can do that with Kerberos and the GSS-API in OpenSSH already.

FedRegister··on How to prevent screenshots in a web browser
When will website authors learn that you control the content but the client, by virtue of owning their computer, controls the presentation. At best you can make suggestions. At worse you're at the total mercy of the user.

If you want to give out indelible images then go back to print.

FedRegister··on Hire More Women In Tech
>If your objective is 50/50, you need to encourage more women to enter the field [programming] rather than complain it isn't 50/50. 74/26 makes it mathematically impossible for every company to hire a 50/50 split.

It's not mathematically impossible. You'll just have the "excess" 48% of the population working in fields that have the opposite gender balance. (Whether or not this is desirable is an exercise left to the reader.)

FedRegister··on Show HN: Browser plugin that turns 'disrupt' into 'bullshit'
After "cloud to butt" and "disrupt to bullshit" how long until there's an arbitrary regex replacement addon for Chrome/Firefox so we can stop writing new plugins and just add new replacements?
FedRegister··on Why Everyone Should be Concerned By the Seizure of MyRedBook.com
>Prostitution is a victimless crime. Human trafficking is not. Unfortunately, without legalizing and regulating prostitution worldwide, it's impossible to disambiguate between an autonomous sex worker and a human trafficking victim. But sites like these can really help with that disambiguation.

>The FBI should be working toward this disambiguation. It should be filtering out the sex workers from the human trafficking victims, because the latter are the only actual victims in this business.

Have you ever considered that the opponents of legalized prostitution want it this way? They want prostitution to be conflated with human trafficking, rape, and violence against women because nobody is for those things. They want to be able to use that as their major emotional argument to circumnavigate logic and reason so people react based on emotion, not reason.

FedRegister··on Things You Should Know About Tor
As I recall, best practice for running an exit node at home (if you want to do it) is to have a separate Internet connection for it. That way you keep your traffic separate from the exit node traffic.
FedRegister··on Things You Should Know About Tor
If you're using the same browser for Tor and non-Tor traffic (and therefore the same cookies) then You Are Doing It Wrong.
FedRegister··on A Grieving Father Pulls a Thread That Unravels BNP’s Illegal Deals
So if country A is at war with country B then the government of A shouldn't be allowed to prevent company C from selling items which materially benefit and provide aid and comfort to country B?
FedRegister··on A Grieving Father Pulls a Thread That Unravels BNP’s Illegal Deals
Are you saying that sovereign nations don't have the right to decide who they're willing to trade with? Because that's in essence what you're saying when you say economic sanctions should end.
FedRegister··on For Hire: Dedicated Young Man With Down Syndrome
Your son improvising and making mistakes is a good thing. Mistakes are what cause us to learn. To make them in an environment with little downside is a great way to grow as a person as opposed to making them in the real world where you could get fired for them.
FedRegister··on AdBlock Plus’s effect on Firefox’s memory usage
That's why you only allow the CDN hosting the videos to run JavaScript and disallow the ad network hosts from running JavaScript. Best of both worlds - you get your video stream but never have to run the ad network JS.
FedRegister··on NetBSD 6.1.4 and 6.0.5 released
The SDF Public Access Unix System[1] uses NetBSD exclusively. They had some bad[2] times[3] in the past with Linux[4], and they seem very happy with NetBSD now.

FedRegister··on Microsoft ends support for Windows XP and Office 2003
That's exactly something that an app compatibility shim should fix.

FedRegister··on Crazy Stone computer Go program defeats Ishida Yoshio 9 dan with 4 stones
Cannot recommend the bamboo set enough.

I went to the local go club a few times before picking up my own go equipment. I wanted to get some "hands on" feel for the board and stones, to pick the brain of people who have played longer than me on a greater variety of equipment, and to find out how genuinely terrible I am at go. I live in a town where there is a decent sized Asian market area. While some of the shops had go equipment, it was subpar and way too expensive for my blood.

The set MichaelGG is talking about is the first set that I picked up for myself. It was the centerpiece of my living room for several years, and has taken all of the abuse I can throw at it (over eager new players, drunk friends, young kids, pets, the go club) in stride.

As I was still learning and teaching the game I picked up a smaller, reversible 9x9 and 13x13 board with plastic stones, and that set never sees the light of day. It's far too light and chintzy to play on now. If you're sure you want go equipment, I would take at least a bamboo board and single convex yunzi stones. The upfront cost might seem like much, but the set from YMI will last at least a generation if not longer.

FedRegister··on Depackaging the Nintendo 3DS CPU
Less power means longer battery life, and it doesn't matter as long as the games are fun. The game being fun is much more important than how new the processor is.
FedRegister··on Frozen Funds
There's not much to publish. If you can't view the source, and it doesn't run on your computer, and you can't easily migrate from one to another then you can't trust it and shouldn't use it.
FedRegister··on Pending Comments
I predict a cottage industry of sites that provide unmoderated discussion around the HN frontpage articles in the wake of this decision. It might be interesting to provide a site to do incline, anonymous annotation of/replies to existing, approved comments. Sort of a meta-HN meets Statler and Waldorf.
FedRegister··on Dear founders: Children are not a distraction, they are motivation
Can't speak for the previous poster, but my company has a strict policy - people with children get first consideration for time off. When there is inclement weather, they're the first sent home to take care of their children. When there is extra work to be done, the person with children is the first to be exempt from overtime.

So at my company there is a very strict policy about this, and it gets followed to a T.

FedRegister··on CBS chief says network could go all-Internet if Aereo wins
If you want a device that "just works", Series 2 TiVo devices support connecting a digital converter box, and Series 3 TiVos support OTA digital broadcasts out of the box.
FedRegister··on MtGox.com is offline
I'd support if you mean "death by hanging in the public square" by criminal liability for illegal financial activity.

Make the corporation pay back every penny they got illegally, then hang the bastards high to set an example.

FedRegister··on Whatever happened to the IPv4 address crisis?
That was always a question I had in the back of my mind. We have this huge address space. Why not reserve a single prefix that means "look at the lower 32-bits of this address and use it as an IPv4 address"?
FedRegister··on Comcast Acquiring Time Warner Cable In All Stock Deal Worth $45.2 Billion
Then do the constituents of your city, county, state, and country a service and either stand for election, volunteer time for a candidate that's not an asshole, or donate money to the campaign of a candidate that's not an asshole so they get on the ballot. Otherwise you get what you deserve.
