Fomite··on AI-ready biological data: $1.8B global commitment
Meanwhile the current administration is actively taking formerly publicly available data sets that are critical for research offline.
Fomite··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
The whole modus operandi for LLMs at this point is to produce a flood of material and then hope someone else will have to do the hard work of verifying it while you gloat about your productivity.
Fomite··on The many mysteries and lessons of the Bayeux tapestry
Once you know about it, there's also a lot of symbolic shorthand for recognition and the like.
Fomite··on The many mysteries and lessons of the Bayeux tapestry
Honoring a beloved medieval art historian professor of mine:

"It's more properly the Bayeux Embroidery"

Fomite··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
Yeah - I don't want AI writing "notes" in the academic sense, but minutes.

Of course the problem with this for me (I'm a state employee) is that said transcript is a public record.

Fomite··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
Sarah Taber has given some interesting talks about this - the short version is there is probably a fair amount of outbreaks caused by small farms, they just don't have the reach to be detected.
Fomite··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
The FoodNet thing, while bad, has a bit of nuance in the system was not meant to do outbreak detection, so likely wouldn't have helped here.

But it does cripple our ability to ask if this was a one-off, or if we're seeing long term trends that should be worrisome.

Fomite··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
This. As an infectious disease epidemiologist, the number of people who will work their way into laboratory confirmed case reports is a small fraction of the total number of people impacted.

You are almost certainly not reflected in those numbers.

Fomite··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
Honestly, I think we would do well to dispose of both "founder" and "startup".

We had words for this. "Small business" and "Small business owner".

Fomite··on How Universities Should Prepare Founders
Why, in particular, above any other aspect of society?
Fomite··on I should have loved biology (2020)
In contrast, I loved biology and felt its applications call to me, and it took me like five years after struggling through calculus to go "Oh, that's what that's for."
Fomite··on I should have loved biology (2020)
One of the things that struck me the most, watching keynote presentations from the absolute best-of-the-best in my field (infectious diseases) was how often those presentations, which were often reflections on the path of ones career, involved a liberal arts education.
Fomite··on Puppy PPE
Who said anything about surgery? He expressed some problems with things like dogs having trouble with profiles, and reacting poorly to the mask/helmet things - that's the type of thing where veterinary schools have literal experts that extension can help connect you with.

Ironically, probably the one thing a vet extension can't help with? Cheap surgery.

Fomite··on It is a sign of the times that Amazon gets to call this fair use
You seem to be conflating something being legal with it being either ethical or desirable.
Fomite··on It is a sign of the times that Amazon gets to call this fair use
"And now everything is stale and the same."

AI content is not exactly helping everything feeling like Extruded Product.

Fomite··on Puppy PPE
Wherever the OP is, this feels very much like the kind of thing your local veterinary school extension office can connect you with someone to help with.
Fomite··on Clinical failure rates over the decades: yikes
I've been hearing some form of it since I was an undergrad. I just submitted by packet for full professor. There have been some spectacular strides, but we've been through multiple rounds of "Stand aside, the computers will take it from here."
Fomite··on Clinical failure rates over the decades: yikes
Doing hard things is hard.
Fomite··on Doctors die. It's not like the rest of us, but it should be (2016)
Like many conspiracy theories, yours seems to require holding two contradictory pieces of information as true.
Fomite··on Vagal cholinergic denervation of the gastric mucosa in Long-COVID-19
There has been a shift - an understandable one, and one I by and large support (absent some edge cases) - to move away from causal language for observational studies.
Fomite··on Vagal cholinergic denervation of the gastric mucosa in Long-COVID-19
They are studies, and frankly, without something like this, doing things like the appropriate power calculations and risk assessments for larger studies would be hard to do.
Fomite··on An American Privacy Emergency
One of the things I have found so alarming about a lot of recent revelations is just how cheap congress goes for.
Fomite··on 15-minute at-home Lyme disease tick test
In many places, you need to add lizards to that list.
Fomite··on 15-minute at-home Lyme disease tick test
This is one of the things that is oft repeated by my vector disease colleagues -- your infection may not be caused by the tick you found, but by the tick you didn't.
Fomite··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
When we had to have a frank discussion about whether to fail someone who obviously used an LLM for parts their dissertation.
Fomite··on Agents can now create Cloudflare accounts, buy domains, and deploy
While large social media sites have captured lots of traffic, etc. I've had small websites for a local wargaming club, a very modest blog, etc. for decades requiring little or no technical expertise.

The idea that people who want modest websites need active agentic systems to do that is a really odd take.

Fomite··on Microsoft and OpenAI end their exclusive and revenue-sharing deal
All humanity will benefit, but some humanity will benefit more than others.
Fomite··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
One reason I don't read HN as much as I used to is because I can't help translating numbers like that into the amount of research that could be accomplished with the same amount, and then I get angry.
Fomite··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
WSU faculty here. The Cosmic Crisp is under license to Washington state growers for ten years, starting in about 2019, so it will be a few years yet.
Fomite··on I built an AI receptionist for a mechanic shop
Yeah - this scenario presupposes that if I need my car fixed I'm going to wait for you to give me a call back, rather than continue working down my list.
