FranchuFranchu··on US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
Yes, it stems from Latin. See Latin's case declension tables [0]

In Spanish and Portugese, -a is a feminine suffix and -o is masculine; that's where we get Patricio vs Patricia.

There are very few female names that end with -o and very few male names that end with -a in Spanish.

Another example is -ine in Joseph/Josephine. -ine/-ino/-in is a feminizing suffix in German and a diminutive in Spanish and French, that's why it's a femenine suffix in names. In English we have hero vs heroine.

You should probably say somewhere that the questions are US-centric. For example, "the death penalty should remain legal" doesn't make sense in places where it isn't.

Hi! This is part of Jewish religious purity law and not usually taken as part of the rules that govern most Christian denominations. For example, women who are menstruating are usually not banned from participating in Christian services, and any other people would be unsuited to partake in Temple service according to Jewish religious law are usually allowed to participate in worship in Christianity.

FranchuFranchu··on Smuggling arbitrary data through an emoji
You could store UTF-8 encoded data inside the hidden bytestring. If some of the UTF-8 encoded smuggled characters are variation selector characters, you can smuggle text inside the smuggled text. Smuggled data can be nested arbitrarily deep.

> Obviously, nobody steals things while the train is in motion.

Something interesting: I live near a train line where the doors are not automatic (they have to be opened manually on each stop), and there have been incidents where people get pickpocketed while the train is still in motion, and the thief jumps out right before the station, when the train has slowed down significantly but is still in motion. Many people have been hurt doing this.

FranchuFranchu··on Any Game of Life pattern can be constructed from just 15 gliders (2022)
Note: This just says that any GoL pattern that can be constructed by a universal constructor can be constructed from 15 gliders. A universal constructor is a GoL pattern that can construct a very diverse set of patterns, but not any pattern. For example, Garden of Eden patterns are excluded from this category.

FranchuFranchu··on Show HN: Lightsaber Battle – May the Fourth Be with You
You might find this interesting, if you didn't know about it already: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samy_(computer_worm) . In 2005 someone wrote an XSS worm in MySpace that made everyone follow a single person. It worked by injecting itself in the victim's profile description. It quickly reached more than a million people.
FranchuFranchu··on Show HN: Lightsaber Battle – May the Fourth Be with You
This was the injected JS code:

    document.getElementById('name-input').value = document.getElementById('yay').outerHTML; setName(); console.log('yay')
The `<img>` tag I used was wrapped around a `div` element that had the `yay` id. I used `onload` instead of `onerror`, with an image link from Wikipedia.
FranchuFranchu··on Show HN: Lightsaber Battle – May the Fourth Be with You
I wrote an XSS worm that turns people's names into "yay" (and the worm code) but made myself immune to it. Now someone will have to figure out how to write a counter-worm to remove the worm from the lightsaber population. Until then, the "name" feature will be permanently held hostage (by the yay worm)

As soon as ChatGPT got released, I tried to make it solve IMO-style problems. It failed.

If this is legit, this is huge. Finding geometric proofs means proving things, and proving propositions is what an intelligence does. In my opinion, this is the closest we have gotten so far to AGI. Really excited to see what the future holds.

FranchuFranchu··on Irish State announce plan to build a porn preference register for most of the EU
This idea ("I'm against IDs because I fear what they'll do with it") is really interesting to me, because in my country (Argentina) a large part of the national pro-ID sentiment comes from looking back on our own history and attempting to prevent some of the human rights abuses that were committed in our country.

The last dictatorship tried to erase dissident's identities, kidnapped their children and erased their links with their previous family. As a consequence, Argentina now has a "Right to Identity" enshrined into our Constitution and deeply ingrained into our society and culture.

FranchuFranchu··on California to require firms to reveal carbon emissions in first law of its kind
Any carbon tax or carbon tax-like policy will be passed on. However, the _absence of a carbon tax_ already causes costs we don't see yet, when in the future, people die as a consequence of climate change.

FranchuFranchu··on Repeat after me: building any new homes reduces housing costs for all
The best solution to this problem is taxing land value instead of taxing property. Land value taxes have a lot of advantages. They incentivize construction, disincentivize vacant lots, and they also remove the profit that can be earned by being an idle landlord, which is unearned income.

With property tax, improvements on your property are taxed. This makes construction less profitable / housing more expensive. With a land value tax, they aren't.
