FromTheFirstIn··on Alan's conservative countdown to AGI: 99%
> AGI = artificial general intelligence = a machine that performs at the level of an average (median) human.

This seems like a very generous definition, and we’re nowhere near 99% of the way towards it. Maybe 1%? Am I reading it backwards?

FromTheFirstIn··on More Powerful Than Ever, (can't find work)
Yeah, exactly. I really mean what I said- I respect this value. And usually I think filtering out people you don’t want to work with is wise. But the more you want work the more you should loosen the filters

I think it might be D. Your website has a whole section on why not to hire you. One of the things is not to hire you if “I need approval,” and then there’s a pull quote roughly saying you tell it how it is. That’s all well and good as something to value about yourself, but it reads to me like you’re an asshole. I don’t know you- I don’t think YOU think you’re an asshole- but if you’re trying to get hired then I think I’d take a look at the “don’t hire me” section and figure out what you can compromise on. It sounds like you wanna stay near your kids- that seems very doable. Maybe you could work with an agency for a bit. Maybe you can find the space between yes man and firebrand. Just my two cents- good luck!

It’s very funny to watch people admit they can’t code by insisting that “no one could do X by hand!”

As a programmer, I think your reaction is most people’s reaction- it’s ok but if I want good work I have to retrace its steps. Many programmers I know use AI, but our work isn’t scrutinized like I imagine a lawyers would be. Software breaking is on the rise, accountability in tech is on the decline, so using AI is all upside since no one checks any more if users actually like and use the product.

Yeah I think everyone with two brain cells to rub together has figured this out. Which explains why it’s taking so long to take root with investors!

Your definition of good parenting appears to be mostly about not getting divorced. I’m sure many of us know people whose parents stuck together and were bad parents- I know I do. I think this definition is lacking pretty considerably.

So where’s the return? Outside of annualized numbers I haven’t even heard people pretend that OAI or Anthropic are profitable. If this is all about ROI there’s sure been a lot of I for as yet unrealized R.
FromTheFirstIn··on Has the hallucination problem in AI been solved?
No one is scared of saying something anonymously online, and wondering if that’s what’s going on is immature and silly. People earnestly disagree with you, but they don’t owe you an argument
FromTheFirstIn··on Has the hallucination problem in AI been solved?
Man there really isn’t a criticism that won’t lead to a booster saying you’re holding it wrong
FromTheFirstIn··on Perfection is not over-engineering
> I believe a perfect solution exists. With one big caveat: you need a very clear set of requirements. Every constraint on the table. Tighten those enough and something interesting happens, you end up with only one possible solution.

This is the kind of naive thinking people are actually pushing back on when they’re telling you not to build perfect products. One of the constraints that the author refuses to acknowledge is the social constraint of leading people to a shared goal- if people keep telling you your perfect solution isn’t viable and they do not want to do it, then it’s not perfect, is it?

In general, any approach that believes there’s a One True Answer is either looking at trivial problems or naive egocentrism, in my experience.

The only way to mitigate the damage an LLM can do because of prompt injection is to limit what that LLM can do in the first place. That’s what they mean by limiting its usefulness. If an LLM has access to an api and I want it to abuse that API in some way, I can attack its prompt and eventually get it to use the api the way I want

It’s a bit like saying copy and paste must be intelligent because its output is indistinguishable from intelligent output. Reproduction of intelligence has never been equivalent to intelligence- that’s why we look down on copying, plagiarism or derivative work.
