Gasp0de··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
So only start it when the kids are at school or at dinner?
Gasp0de··on Stringman, an $800 open-source room scale gripper robot
Why wouldn't everyone want a robot that does all your chores, given that it is affordable? Everyone I know uses a washing machine. Do you wash your clothes by hand?

My entire house is designed for humanoids. Stairs, door handles, step ladders to get onto the attic. I wonder how R2D2 would walk up stairs. Gas thrusters?
Gasp0de··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
If you're fine with sending your company data to a country that is openly hostile towards most other countries. Afaik, there are no subscriptions with inference outside the USA.
Gasp0de··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
Ok, but subscriptions only work for individuals, not for companies, right?
Gasp0de··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
Do you have a source on that? I thought inference was highly profitable. Are you saying AWS is subsidizing Bedrock and incurring heavy losses?
Gasp0de··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
Does the country you live in not have consumer protection laws?
Gasp0de··on Gemini 4 Argon
I mean it sounds wise to not go all in on publishing expensive models when they can earn money with more efficient models while still not bleeding too many customers?

Which lab is open sourcing their model?
Gasp0de··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
It is harder to install fiber in densely populated areas than in some backcountry farm. Imagine tearing open a busy street in NYC for a few weeks to install fiber vs. digging a trench in the dirt next to the farm road. Which one do you think costs more? For which do you think you need to jump through 1001 bureaucratic hoops?

You seem to be mixing up e2e encryption with at-rest-encryption?

If you have a server in your homelab where you self-host I mich just encrypt the hard drive with LUKS.

Gasp0de··on Tell HN: Happy Fathers Day
We had fathers day on May 14th :)
Gasp0de··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
Hyperscalers buy so many CPUs and so much RAM they can dictate prices (to a point) or at least make an agreement to buy at a much lower price but buy X amount for the next 5 years.
Gasp0de··on Acetaminophen vs. ibuprofen
On mice.
Gasp0de··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
It's ironic that the country that screams freedom loudest is actually not that free after all.
Gasp0de··on Taking on CUDA with ROCm: 'One Step After Another'
I believe this is what that teamlead in the article comments on as next steps?
Gasp0de··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
Yes, although to be fair we have around 1.8kWp, plus roof installation material, plus shipping.
Gasp0de··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
Hi, sorry I'm late to respond. The price was something like this: 150€ Hoymiles HMS-800W-2t 300€ 4 Trina Solar 445W Full Black panels 100€ Shelly Pro 3em (not necessary but I wanted to see how much we feed in) The rest was construction materials and small stuff. We have mounted it on our roof, 900W East, 900W West. One east and one west panel are wired in parallel and connected to one MPPT of the HMS-800W. We're producing around 1.3MWh per year.
Gasp0de··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
I live in Germany, installed a micro solar system in September 2024. Since then, we've been producing 45% of our electricity consumption ourselves. This has saved us 550€, while the initial cost was around 800€. So this September, after 2 years, the system will have paid for itself.
Gasp0de··on Agents that run while I sleep
Why would I ever want to book a course with someone who just realized weeks ago they don't know if the code does what they want if they don't look at it?
Gasp0de··on Ireland shuts last coal plant, becomes 15th coal-free country in Europe (2025)
Natural Gas is such a weird PR term coined by fossil industry. I think the term "fossil gas" is much clearer.

Great, let's just require biometric identification before posting online, what could go wrong.
Gasp0de··on Gemini 3 Flash: Frontier intelligence built for speed
Does that mean that you also don't switch to newer Anthropic models? Because they would change similarly, wouldn't they?
Gasp0de··on We saved $500k per year by rolling our own "S3"
You're right, I didn't pay attention there. Still seems that there a many solutions better suited than S3. Probably a classic case of "We need an MVP fast, let's optimize later".
Gasp0de··on We saved $500k per year by rolling our own "S3"
Exactly, my first thought was "Why in earth would anyone think that S3 was the right service to store millions of tiny ephemeral files?" and now it seems they have invented their own in-memory store instead of just using something like Redis. I also wonder what happens if their DIY thingy crashes, are the videos lost? Why not send to Kinesis or SQS in the first place?
Gasp0de··on Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage
The propaganda machine is called X and he bought it to brainwash people, so don't feel to bad about it. Good that you realized!
Gasp0de··on [dead]
To be honest I have never used Cursor nor do I know their pricing, but isn't revenue kind of a stupid metric if you're just a frontend for a paid API? Like wouldn't almost all of this revenue just go through them towards OpenAI or Anthropic?
Gasp0de··on Rising young worker despair in the United States
The only thing missing is replacing the head of the federal reserve bank with a mindless puppet so they stop standing in the way of success (inflation).
