GilbertErik··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
There's no professional sports team (the category for the day) called the 'LOINS'
GilbertErik··on Here's a puzzle game. I call it Reverse the List of Integers
In Towers of Hanoi, you're only allowed to pick up one disc at a time, so it's not completely trivial. It's simply operation intensive... kinda like Reverse the List of Integers

'Backups' ain't backups if you don't have a reliable 'Restore' process.
GilbertErik··on Governments turn tables on ransomware gang REvil by pushing it offline
The main argument against making ransom payments illegal is that it simply drives ransom payments underground. Legislating something, similar to vices like drugs, alcohol or gambling, doesn't make it go away.
GilbertErik··on What Is RPN? Why Did/Does HP Use RPN? Learning RPN (1999)
I've had a decent experience using RealCalc Plus, although it's just my backup when I don't have my 32SII handy.
GilbertErik··on AWS Cognito is having issues and health dashboards are still green
If they host it somewhere else, it signals they lack confidence in their own product.

If they self-host it, it signals that they're overconfident in their ability to maintain an accurate status page.

Given these two options, which do you think a budget manager will have an easier time signing off on and defending upward?

GilbertErik··on South Park creators have new political satire series with AI-generated deepfakes
I think you need to listen. There's little differences between Peter Serafinowicz as Fred Sassy and Trey Parker as Al Gore. There's tiny little mistakes in the voice. I think you need to watch it again, but this time watch with your ears. </s>
GilbertErik··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Very true. I hadn't specified AM or PM as to when I wanted to start the dinner roast. :-/
GilbertErik··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
In the past week:

me: "Hey Google, add half and half to the shopping list."

gh: "I've added those two things."

-----

me: "Set an alarm for 2:30 tomorrow"

gh: <generic alarm set response>

...

wife at 2:30AM: "hey... HEY... why's the alarm in the kitchen downstairs going off?"

GilbertErik··on Eat for $1.50 per Day – Layoffs, Coronavirus Quarantine, Food Shortages
Came here just to make sure it wasn't only me
GilbertErik··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
I think they don't have that return option because if Amazon were to present a return option that lets you signal sellers sending you counterfeit goods, that'd be tantamount to Amazon admitting they sell counterfeit goods.

They'd never sell you counterfeit goods, so that option on the pulldown doesn't even need to be there in the first place!?!? wink wink right?!? RIGHT??!

As someone who's received a counterfeit board game, I do have to say that they were exceedingly prompt in getting me a replacement item. I know it's probably an uphill battle, but I hope they're able to make some progress on that front.

GilbertErik··on How to Build a Remote Team: Resources and Advice from Remote Companies
COOL! How's this compare to Sococo?
GilbertErik··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
I generally like throwing on di.fm while working, but have started to really dislike commercial breaks.
GilbertErik··on How many .com domain names are unused?
Since Google has a much larger bankroll than you, if they decided that they wanted prickledpear.com, wouldn't you have to sell it to them, or any other party with deep enough pockets?
GilbertErik··on New Planes That May Change Travel
Exit row if you don't want someone reclining in front of you, or bulkhead if you don't want someone in front you. There's always First when you don't want _anyone_ in front of you.
GilbertErik··on Twitter’s deletion of its FB app caused old cross-posts to temporarily disappear
Same here. I would regularly post to twitter and wait for it to appear on Facebook and track the conversation there. The majority of old high school friends and distant relatives _only_ keep up with me through Facebook.

When a post from two weeks ago didn't show up, I should've listened to my gut instinct to grab a recent dump of my FB data.

GilbertErik··on Massive Comcast Outage Hits the US
I'm using PIA
GilbertErik··on Massive Comcast Outage Hits the US
I didn't notice for a while because my primary Amazon Workspace wasn't affected, but when various requests weren't working on wifi but were working from my cell phone, that's when I figured out something was up.
GilbertErik··on Massive Comcast Outage Hits the US
Confirming from S.Florida. I can get to some/most of my AWS workspaces and GCE instances, but not to wikipedia.org... unless I turn on my VPN in which cases they block some traffic or make me go through JS verification, but then at least wikipedia works. :-(
GilbertErik··on Massive Comcast Outage Hits the US
Thanks Ajit!
GilbertErik··on Talk Like a Texan: How Texans Use “Down,” “Out,” “Over,” and “Up”
We grew up not using the dichotomy of 'Out' vs. 'Over', but 'Out' vs. 'In' signifying whether we're heading to a more rural or urban area. e.g. Let's go in (to town) to go to a bar. Let's go camping out at Krause.

'Over' is more reserved when going to a previously known destination.

...but most people, whether using an installer or not, don't have multiple faucets that can dispense sand. Nearly everyone _does_ have access to water though.

GilbertErik··on Ransomware attack 'not designed to make money', researchers claim
It's not about harming Google or Microsoft. It's about attacking vulnerabilities in infrastructure. No one cares if your webapp that's instantly reporting on the current length of a celebrity's hair is still capable of serving traffic if traffic lights have been disabled or if your ISP has been knocked completely off line or if the cellular network has been severely crippled.
GilbertErik··on Clac – A command-line, stack-based calculator with postfix notation
If I need to see what's going on, I've relied on orpie for quite a long time. I like soveran's video showing off what it does, but I'd rather manipulate a stack rather than have the output appended to the end of my cursor.
GilbertErik··on Google Compute Engine Incident #16015
While it's true that an auto insurance company doesn't profit off car crashes... if people _never_ had car crashes, we might not need auto insurance companies.
GilbertErik··on Women candidates for tech jobs did worse when their voices were masked as men's
Exactly. Changing pitch or modulating doesn't change things like pacing and diction and word choice.

It'd be like saying 'Men in pink jeans do worse in bars than women in camo dresses'.

GilbertErik··on WebGazer.js: Eye Tracking on the Browser
BUT BUT BUT!!! I spend so much time moving the cursor out of the way so I can read the letter under the pointer.
GilbertErik··on 'Escape Rooms' Challenge Players To Solve Puzzles To Get Out
'manipulable', 'variance'

You keep-a using those words. I do not think it means what you think it means.
