GoodbyeMrChips··on Tell HN: Meetup.com is offering abandoned meetups to anyone willing to pay
WOW!

Comments pointing out that this is illegal in the UK and Europe under the GDPR removed! What gives?

GoodbyeMrChips··on The Secret Life of Leftovers
> the myth of the "expiration date"

We (UK) have use by dates, and best before dates.

They mean exactly what they say.

i.e. Raw chicken will have a use by date, eat it beyond this and you risk getting the shits. On the other hand all fruit, veg, tins and most dairy simply have best before dates.... meaning use your eyes and nose to see if it is OK.

GoodbyeMrChips··on The Secret Life of Leftovers
> in the US

Ah, this makes sense.

I recall eating in US restaurants and being given ridiculously large portions... something we half-joked - half-seriously suggested was down to the size of some of the patrons. Presumably is it instead the expectation that some of the food is taken home.

GoodbyeMrChips··on The Secret Life of Leftovers
> I can't imagine wasting food from a restaurant -- I always have taken my leftovers home and eaten them later.

Is this a thing where you are from?

I suggest here in Blighty, the waiters would be rather confused by such a request; not to mention something of a social faux pas.

GoodbyeMrChips··on I was at Woodstock ’99 and it destroyed my innocence
Why is this comment downvoted? It is perfectly legitimate.

If you disagree with it, post a response, don't just lazily click downvote. This isn't Reddit. Downvoting is for replies that distract from the conversation, not for replies you don't agree with FFS.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Thinking with pen and paper
> almost chain of evidence

It is, and was a chain of evidence for me. One that saved my arse.

Type up your reports and spreadsheets, but raw data should always be kept in a proper hardbound paper lab notebook.... one that references the filenames of your typed up electronic data.

GoodbyeMrChips··on I was at Woodstock ’99 and it destroyed my innocence
Question.

By "Travellers" do you mean, 'new age travellers' (aka hippies) or the thieving scrotes who live a 'traditional way of life' badly tarmacing driveways?

The former still attend Glastonbury for free (they clean up the site for 'free' entry); the latter are a menace who started to show up and whom I'm glad the fence has now kept out.

GoodbyeMrChips··on I was at Woodstock ’99 and it destroyed my innocence
> you had to pay ..... just to get a bottle of water.

The fact that somebody even tried to do this suggests the organisers were dangerous fuckwits. The outcome was unsurprising.

GoodbyeMrChips··on I was at Woodstock ’99 and it destroyed my innocence
> Was '99 any worse than the original?

This statement implies that the two were in some way connected.

GoodbyeMrChips··on In Remote Alaska, Meal Planning Is Everything
WOW!

Posts removed for saying OP's statement that "UK isn't exactly known for its food" is both outdated and prejudiced!

Explanation needed methinks.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Inside the Irish Republican Army (1994)
> The IRA were terrorists.

Seconded.

To see such a plainly factual statement being down voted on HN is deeply worrying.......

I suspect the Americans doing the down voting have never been cought up in a terrorist attack and are happy being keyboard warriors about something they know so little.

Thank fuck for the peace process and the hard work that has gone into it.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Love the smell of old books? This bookseller would like you to leave
Eh?

One buys sports cars and wine for enjoyment. The idea of buying the most expensive offering for its own sake is laughable.

One doesn't order an expensive claret to drink with fish!

GoodbyeMrChips··on Love the smell of old books? This bookseller would like you to leave
> No better or worse than trying to signal with.....

"Signalling" ?

Part of me has just died. Have you ever thought about not giving a toss what others think and just reading?

GoodbyeMrChips··on Behind Closed Doors review – entertaining study of London private members’ clubs
> No matter if you made millions, unless you have pedigree, you don't belong.

It works the other way also......... plenty members of our upper class aristocracy are penniless, but are, and remain, upper class.

I always find the US approach to equating money with class rather amusing.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill
> The obsession with linking your real life to your online life is the most toxic change to internet culture since the web started.

Seconded.

As the saying goes; "What is the difference between posting something on the internet and a tattoo on your arse?..... It's easier to remove the tattoo."

Because that personal information you posted or 'offensive' joke you posted when pissed will stay around forever to haunt you.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill
> We have rights guaranteed to us in the United States that no other country has

Good god!

You really believe your own hype don't you? (I believe the American expression is "drunk the kool-aid").

GoodbyeMrChips··on The State of Fortran
> the nuclear power plant I worked at ran mostly on LabView

Jesus wept!

-Signed, a physicist with 20 years LabView and Fortran experience.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
Errrrm....

That's an ordinary 24 hour clock. Rather bizarre to call it "Military" time.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
> British and Irish English only? Others can correct me here.

You are correct....

Unlike 'merkin English, in British English saying 'half nine' [meaning 9:30] is fine and one would only say 'half-past-nine' if they were feeling verbose, or have a Dutch workmate and were trying to avoid confusion :-)

GoodbyeMrChips··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
>Do Europeans just not have analog clocks or watches anymore?

Not in Britain we don't. Analog clocks were abolished by Henry VIII. Since then we kept time using sundials until digital watches were invented in the 1970's and Roger Moore wore one playing James Bond in 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.

GoodbyeMrChips··on Ask HN: What does 12:00 AM mean?
> you generally pronounce it as military time

WTF is 'military time'?

GoodbyeMrChips··on Ask HN: Wife's Instagram account was deleted – what now?
> Are there any Metamates

I can't be the only one who laughed at this!

GoodbyeMrChips··on Plausibly deniable encryption (2020)
> How could a prison system ever really do that? It's a punishment.

Reading this, I'd bet £1000 to spat out sweet you are US-American?

Because elsewhere, most of the civilised world treats prison as rehabilitation.

GoodbyeMrChips··on EU draft proposes identity requirement for cryptocurrency transactions
> eliminating large bills

Surely you mean eliminating large denomination banknotes?

GoodbyeMrChips··on EU draft proposes identity requirement for cryptocurrency transactions
And cryptocurrencies have huge scaling issues cashing out!
GoodbyeMrChips··on Airbnb wants to GPS track you also when not using the app
Tracking you and storing the data without good reason and without up-front transparency is very clearly a GDPR breach.

When will these idiots learn that you simply cannot go gathering personal data on the off chance you might find it useful or sell it. Gathering unnecessary personal data isn't an asset, it is a liability. And so it should be.

GoodbyeMrChips··on What kind of Apple Mac did Arthur Dent have?
> "What if F Scott Fitzgerald came up to earth, said "It's pronounced Jatsby", then left?"

Oh what you don't know!

Robert Louis Stevensons 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde', the pronunciation of Jekyll should be "Jyeec-ill" (rhymes with 'treacle') and not "Jek-ill".

Stevenson was of course Scottish, and this is how the Scots name is pronounced. However, the latter pronunciation for the books title has come into more common use for some reason.

GoodbyeMrChips··on What to know about the stock market (2007)
> being offered stock in your own company

Off-topic from the thrust of this conversation, but I always considered the above extremally risky. If your company goes tits-up, you loose your job and your savings.

This happened to a lot of people during the dot-com crash of 2000. (Unless you have a high risk tolerance, you will want to diversify much more.)
