Gravyness··on Looking for a tech job is a helpless data-entry nightmare
"I don't know" is the last thing I expected someone to say, everyone is so fuckin certain nowadays. Thank you for taking the effort to post that, I mean it. I've always felt insecure about most of my convictions because the environment I was raised in could not support mistakes, which was perfect for computer engineering: We can always test again when we get something wrong. People are clearly not like that (or so I learned). Thanks. Really.
Gravyness··on Looking for a tech job is a helpless data-entry nightmare
I know my english could use some improvement and I will leave this first comment to clarify I am a Brazilian developer: My main language is Portuguese, but I've been a productive software engineer for over 3 consecutive years in companies with daily meetings and did a good job. All I am asking is what should we (software engineers) focus our effort on?
Gravyness··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2024)
Just a note: the link for Staff Software Engineer for Distributed Systems is returning 404. Also, does the company considers Senior React Developers (Web) for the React Native role?
Gravyness··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
What a great experience applying, thanks for that! Its organized, easy to navigate, descriptions are clear and straight to the point, it even has got a nice design! Talk about raising the bar!
Gravyness··on Google claims to have proved its supremacy with new quantum computer
> This might be a case of a rabbit you do not want to chase.

I'm sure the researchers will all collectively realize this, if it were to be the case, and disregard their 12 year academic journey with their great salaries in favor of research into more important topics like world hunger, renewable energy, etc.

I'm so sure that the percentage of sureness is an imaginary, quantum-entangled value between -7 and 13 billion percent.

Gravyness··on Have we lost our minds?
> You're just using power that could go towards training a better LLM.

What if I haven't found that special someone yet, the one that will help me raise the next better LLM? I think I already got like 40% of the dataset I find valuable, all I need is to find someone with the other 40% and we could go in a journey together to find the remaining 20%. Sounds like the adventure of a life time.

Gravyness··on OpenAI API keys leaking through app binaries
Yes, but you could negotiate a token with each user on startup and if someone starts abusing your service you can block that access (perhaps automatically) or know who it is by authenticating the user.
Gravyness··on We updated our RSA SSH host key
Run "ssh -T git@github.com" command.

It should error like this:

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY!
Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)!
It is also possible that a host key has just been changed.
The fingerprint for the RSA key sent by the remote host is
    SHA256:uNiVztksCsDhcc0u9e8BujQXVUpKZIDTMczCvj3tD2s.
    Please contact your system administrator.
Note that the SHA256 present there matches perfectly the one github send. If you don't remember the very first time you connected to github you also had to accept the key. The warning above shows up because the server is saved as a different RSA, for the SSH client it seems that someone setup a server for github but has a different key, which could mean someone is trying to trick you into connecting into the wrong server. This could also mean that github changed their RSA key which is why they published this article.
Gravyness··on Running LLaMA 7B on a 64GB M2 MacBook Pro with Llama.cpp
Why doesn't torch use automated artifact generation? As in a virtual machine or a github actions that download dependencies and compile it when a new python version is released?
Gravyness··on Show HN: New AI edits images based on text instructions
A similar tool: Instruct pix2pix to alter images by describing the changes required: https://huggingface.co/timbrooks/instruct-pix2pix#example

Edit: Just noticed it is the same thing but wrapped, nevermind, pretty cool project!

Gravyness··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried throwing GPT3 at unobfuscating / disassembly?
No, they are lost forever... Humm... Wait I have an idea:

Prompt: How can entropy be reversed?

Reply: There is no single answer to this question as entropy is a thermodynamic property and therefore its reversal depends on the specific system under consideration. In general, however, entropy can be reversed by either increasing the temperature of the system (thus increasing the average kinetic energy of the particles) or by decreasing the volume of the system (thus increasing the number of collisions between particles).

Gravyness··on Kaluma: A Tiny JavaScript Runtime for RP2040 (Raspberry Pi Pico)

    npm install -g @kaluma/cli

    kaluma flash index.js
This installs kaluma, finds the connected device, uploads the code and runs it. Love this simplicity, sounds like it was made the right way. Is there any posts with benchmarks? Very interested about the timing limits of the event loop implementation such as setInterval(()=>{}, 1); and other cpu heavy stuff like math stuff and pin output change speed from javascript.
Gravyness··on A neurologist’s quest to solve Covid-related neurological disorders
Right, I'll open my digital newsletter then where the information is crystal clear and made by experts who clearly proved they know their shit a few years ago when things went bad.

If you think you know where the experts are at then please tell us so we can test your hypothesis.

Gravyness··on The GPU shortage is over. The GPU surplus has arrived
Adjusted for inflation?
Gravyness··on In two centuries, the labor to produce a kilogram of grain was reduced by 99.7%
What kind of economic revolution will happen as that statistics approaches 100% for every good, not just grain?

Because eventually "work" will be so unnecessary we will need to redistribute money to people who have nothing to do and now that I put that into words I have realized that is already happening at my country, nevermind.

Gravyness··on SSH tips and tricks
vscode connected with ssh is close: It's not sharing because it only allows you to edit the server file system as if you had opened a project locally, but it does give you the feeling that you have the project there, and every time you save it goes directly to the server via ssh.
Gravyness··on Video Stabilization with FFmpeg and VidStab
Thanks for this but could someone include a sample video? I know this is an old post but it's not worth to install everything to make that work only to learn that the stabilization quality is subpar or that it leaves strange artifacts on videos.
Gravyness··on Ask HN: Who do you talk to about system architecture and design?
I know that some companies do data mining on candidates, so it's very likely that some companies out there are doing exactly this.
Gravyness··on The Mozlila user agent and why it is part of many web attack campaigns
It could also be done intentionally, as someone with the knowledge to do large-scale exploit detection could have their own servers and therefore wanted a way to easily add a way to detect his own creation when he was being scanned by others.
Gravyness··on The end of Optane is bad news
Don't worry, the apps know where the files are when you need them. And you only need them when you are using the app, after all you will own nothing and you will be... wait now that I think about it, you do have the files somewhere on your hard drive, right? so they're technically actually yours, right? my mistake, yeah so nothing to worry here.

And there are some rare exceptions of those apps that uploads your stuff to the cloud for security and for easy backups, such a great technology because if you ever lose your computer you can just buy another one and the 'files' will be magically there (as long as you keep paying the app subscription)! Hopefully the author also implemented the app in a way that can be used offline.

Btw you will need the newest version of the computer because your apps updated so that's also great because new features are good! Your files are basically your creation, you can't just leave them behind.

Gravyness··on How I write React after 8 years
Don't worry there's a library for that. Probably. And it might or might not have performance issues and odd behavior but that's for the next developer to solve.
Gravyness··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
Wise people appear to never be quite sure about what they say, so they rarely incur huge changes in people life, but dumb people have such a limited map of reality that everything is crystal clear and therefore they are the ones people pay attention to.

A good nutritionists would never say such nonsense but that varies on how we definite "good".

Gravyness··on A little trick to spam the spammers (2021)
A trick I like is to fill every form with "null".
Gravyness··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
Every single company I joined that promised a stress-free environment has outright lied to me to the point that I will find it suspicions if HR mentions how happy and balanced the work is. It is a huge deal for me but HR will never be honest about it to me because if they did they wouldn't hire much and would be replaced by someone who says "Working here is a fun challenge where you will be tested for your vast knowledge, quick understanding of complicated subjects, reason about its working and explain it to superiors, quality and fast deliveries of working products, and will certainly grow like no where else!"

This reminds me of the author of "Man's Search for Meaning" who wrote a international master piece while on a concentration camp. Yes, growth is there to be had, but that is an experience I would rather avoid, thank you.

Gravyness··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
Yeah, I don't think they will cease. Frustrated managers that cannot fill a position will always produce these as they literally have nothing to do with the lack of workers. My university was filled with 'accelerator' companies because of this: It is very hard to find talent on the market and everyone is aware of the reason. It also doesn't matter that everyone commenting here knows the reason and are willing to spell it out every time one of these articles shows up.

There are thousand plus companies that are specialized on finding talent for other companies just because of how difficult it is. I wouldn't be surprised if there already exists companies that hire these talent-seeking companies for your company.

Gravyness··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
Is the person you commented ugly too, or do you have an argument better than calling someone an imbecile?
Gravyness··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
What about 2020, and 2019? I'm more interested in the trend than in the absolute number.
Gravyness··on Gas price drop hits 30 straight days as oil prices continue collapse
I'm from Brazil and we have a right-wing politician, and the same argument is running around for the same reasons. Maybe it's not a world wide effect but it sure involves too many variables to attribute it all to one actor. But if it goes up you can bet the opposition will say its his fault, and if it goes down you can bet the opposition will say it is not his fault. Depends on how self-aware the person you're talking to is, and that skill is useless on the internet as it makes you unsure about your convictions.
Gravyness··on Bun (can become) the ideal JavaScript runtime
I'm not willing to change the program that I use to run scripts for a performance improvement that is difficult to reproduce and partially theoretical. Thanks but I'll stay with the long-lived open source solution while it works fine.
Gravyness··on Monkeypox found to be evolving at a faster rate than expected
Well that does sound familiar. I'll be surprised if it only mostly affects the elderly and the overweight... You know that 'return to monke' meme? Gets me everytime.
