GrumpySimon··on Why Apple's new ads look like Microsoft made them.
If you "hate" an inanimate chunk of aluminium, glass, and various other metals, you probably need to get out more. You may be disappointed by it, or less than thrilled by it, or even think that it's nothing special. But to hate it... that's a bit extreme.
GrumpySimon··on Torchlight art assets stolen, used in iOS game Armed Heroes
yes, otherwise someone unscrupulous could just file complaints against all their competitors and effectively lock them out of the App Store for a period of time.
GrumpySimon··on Twitter crashes itself with commas
Yes, saving 1% of a few million requests a day is not a trivial savings.
GrumpySimon··on Fullscreen in Mountain Lion still renders second display useless
Hit the power button. It pops up a modal with restart, sleep, shut down and cancel.
GrumpySimon··on A few things to remember while coding in Python
Thank you for pointing that out, I've just changed some code :)
GrumpySimon··on Stephen Wolfram IAmA On Reddit (3pm EST)
Thanks for posting this. I'd read it years ago but had lost it. It's excellent and sums up everything that's wrong with SW.

I'd love to ask him to respond to that article. He won't.

GrumpySimon··on Introducing Pinry, a self-hostable Pinterest.
That'll be where nikunjk installed pinry. Pinry saves the files into <pinry>/pins/pin.
GrumpySimon··on Grep-as-you-type the entire Linux kernel source tree
This is very cool. I'd love a command line replacement for grep that does this. Any suggestions?
GrumpySimon··on [dead]
You're in the wrong place, kid.
GrumpySimon··on The Zen of R
I'm a pythonist - use it all the time. Except when I need to do some stats or graphing, and then it's R all the way. The R language is ugly, and warty, but it's awesomely powerful. Hell, the graphing library ggplot2 (http://had.co.nz/ggplot2/) is worth it by itself.
GrumpySimon··on Show HN: We made an awesome way to browse and search your Chrome bookmarks.
This is fantastic! I've got so many damn bookmarks that I don't know what to do with them. Have you got any plans for importing bookmarks from pinboard/delicious?
GrumpySimon··on Pycon 2012 Videos
Yep: http://pyvideo.org/video/628/keynote-paul-graham-ycombinator
GrumpySimon··on Hacked: commit to rails master on GitHub
Allow me to rephrase that:

"Well, it's a beginner-level PHP mistake; it is not precisely an obscure issue. Googling 'SQL Injection/register_globals/get_magic_quotes/etc' will show you discussion going back years, and it has been actively exploited before. I'm shocked that the mistake was made in ..., though."

Ten+ years of register_globals, get_magic_quotes and SQL injection attacks (etc etc etc) in PHP show that even well-known issues still bite people everyday. IMO, it's up to the framework developers to make it easy to do the right thing and damn hard to do the wrong thing.

GrumpySimon··on Youporn.com is now a 100% Redis Site
It's not just now either, the porn industry was hugely influential in causing the adoption and spread of video (you know, on casette), movies and photography.
GrumpySimon··on Elsevier Publishing Boycott Gathers Steam Among Academics
In most academic publications, the editing, typesetting, managing mail, etc is done by the volunteers or the papers authors. Pretty much all journals are going online only so there's no need to print anything.

In short the publishing houses do sod all, and get paid a lot of money for doing sod all.

GrumpySimon··on ITerm2 is now integrated with tmux terminal multiplexer
That, and screen is installed on pretty much everything I use. Tmux isn't.
GrumpySimon··on Django - starting from ground zero - any advice?
Yep, all wrong :) You want a custom filter: http://www.djangoproject.com/documentation/templates_python/
