HNcantBtrustd··on Where Does Affirmative Action Leave Asian-Americans?
I'm no fan of judging people by the color of their skin, why not use family income?

This way it's apparent who is getting high scores due to tutoring and who is naturally gifted.

HNcantBtrustd··on Just Enough Piracy Can Be a Good Thing
Well... I've seen a particularly aggressive company use their IP to kill competitors.

You can't make a specific file format without using this company.

It seems any free or low cost competitor gets bought by them.

It's made the CAD world horrible.

HNcantBtrustd··on Civilizational Collapse, Part 4
You'd like Efficiency Is Everything.

But I was particularly talking about per calorie rather than "per dollar"

HNcantBtrustd··on Civilizational Collapse, Part 4
Vegetarian is lower cost and better for the environment.

Protein per calorie doesn't seem comparable.

HNcantBtrustd··on Huawei Seeks Independence from the US with RISC-V and Ascend Chips
Whenever I hear the horrors of the tradewar in a positive light, I wonder if this is the Russian propagandists in action.

How can war be good? Delighting in the suffering of everyone?

HNcantBtrustd··on The Surprising Number of Programmers Who Can’t Program
11 year, self taught programmer here. Chem engineer by degree.

I had to program for eng 101, engineering 280 mechatronics, and our senior design.

I'm not a programmer by degree, but I was often the only one in group projects that understood what needed to get done.

I don't know what I missed out on. I've wrote AI since college and created embedded systems.

Programming feels unlimited.

But what don't I know? Security? Faster algorithms? I don't know what I don't know.

HNcantBtrustd··on No Son of Mine Is Going to Be a Benthamite
What a hard read.

Recommend saying what you want, no silly fake dialog needed.

HNcantBtrustd··on Why Finland leads the world in flexible work
It doesn't explain what life is like due to losing that industry.

We are told of Utopia in Europe, but aren't told these stories.

HNcantBtrustd··on Preindustrial workers worked fewer hours than today's (2009)
I did this for 3 years. Things you didn't mention-

Breaks exist, and are encouraged. I have to take breaks in my office setting and bosses act like it's not okay.

You get good at the Physical activity. The first month sucks, after that it's fine.

The Physical activity isn't as hard as it appears. There are often tools to aid. I found my 2 Physical jobs was more mental than Physical.

HNcantBtrustd··on Why Finland leads the world in flexible work
I can't fathom what life is like in such a small country.

If 1 major company goes out of business, does it cause chaos?

High unemployment and lower tax revenue sounds like any moment the country could find itself in an economic depression.

In my local area this almost happened.

HNcantBtrustd··on Cold War spy technology we all use
I have strong doubts about your claims of innovation in the military and academia.

Edit, vs Industry.

HNcantBtrustd··on My Sudden Trip to Hell
Part of me thinks this person's job is complete.

He started an idea, developed, and has a team to continue it.

He did his role.

What is next for him? Hopefully he has enough money to live without working. Then he can put his efforts into himself.

HNcantBtrustd··on The Browser Monopoly
>Apple's Safari actually has better standing in terms of alignment of user and developer incentives.

Apple gets credit for being aligned with users and developers?

Out of any of the tech companies, I see Apple the most detached from their users and developers.

Forcing proprietary software, hardware, and accessories is not "for users and developers".

That's Apple's way of generating additional sales and data for Apple.

If they had users and developers as their primary goal, it would be easier to be an Apple customer.

HNcantBtrustd··on Cold War spy technology we all use
Erm, to clarify.

Making labor saving inventions, communication, improvements to infrastructure, discovering new science.

I did not mean weapons.

HNcantBtrustd··on Cold War spy technology we all use
I imagine those innovations are due to tremendous spending, funded by taxes.

I wonder what these engineers would be doing with their time otherwise. What those tax dollars could have accomplished.

Sure we get a few pieces of technology, but it's at enormous cost.

Especially when we hear about small companies or founders able to create useful technology.

Not exactly perfect, but, a broken clock is right twice a day.

HNcantBtrustd··on The WeWork IPO
I see the tech bubble as well.

It was aided in low education investors who are able to invest easier than ever.

I see technology as useful, but there are many companies that have not found a path to profit. this doesn't work.

HNcantBtrustd··on The WeWork IPO
Not if we undergo an inflationary period. And all signs point to the Federal Reserve printing more money.

I don't feel bad about my loans either. I think banks are going to get screwed with a low value USD.

HNcantBtrustd··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
I have a friend with a similar story.

My wife diagnosed it over Snapchat. After that, the Physician she had been seeing agreed. (edit, Wife is a doctor of Physical Therapy)

The longer I live, the less I think Physicians deserve their Monopoly.

HNcantBtrustd··on I Miss Microsoft Encarta
Encarta confused me as a young kid. It wasn't a video game, but I played it like a video game.

I didn't understand what an encyclopedia was.

HNcantBtrustd··on OpenDrop: An Open Source AirDrop Implementation
I don't think your premise that you are saving time is correct.

Apple advertises similar to Luxury car buyers to make you believe you are getting a high quality product. But it's going to be really hard to prove things are quicker.

HNcantBtrustd··on OpenDrop: An Open Source AirDrop Implementation
FOSS may have downsides, for instance it's free, but doesn't have iTunes built in.

I consider both of these advantages, but some users don't. I consider the benefits of open source far exceeds the perceived benefits of Apple's Ecosystem.

Maybe as developers it's important to teach our Apple Peers the problems they perpetuate by paying for walled gardens.

HNcantBtrustd··on US Gen Z and the iMessage Lock-In
Apple vs Facebook? I'll stick with sms
HNcantBtrustd··on US Gen Z and the iMessage Lock-In
Users that promote priority network effects are bad for everyone else.

This isn't Google's fault. It's low education users who get whatever phone their parents bought.

HNcantBtrustd··on A Walk in Hong Kong
In the last 2000 years, much of human progress came in the form of freedom.

In recent times it seems there is a pushback towards less.

HNcantBtrustd··on Apple files lawsuit against Corellium for iOS emulation
Doing God's work. Every Apple purchase makes me feel like I'm creating a computer vilian.

But I grew up during the FOSS craze.

HNcantBtrustd··on Apple files lawsuit against Corellium for iOS emulation
This is why Apple is the last platform I develop for, and I use JavaScript.

Out of the big tech companies, Apple seems to be the most likely to ruin my business model by cutting me off.

Edit, is there something incorrect here? It's historically true and relevant to op.
