HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: How do you organise your files and folders?
Context >

   Programming: Language > Project_Name
   Writing: Month > Article_Title >
   Resume: Year >
   Professional: Company > Notes
Photography: Year > Month > Photos
Videography: Year > Month > Videos
Music: Artists > Albums (or mixtapes)

None of this is on my desktop, I either use finder or terminal to get through them.
HelloFellowDevs··on Career Choice Tip: Cybercrime Is Mostly Boring
I am really glad that I took the cyber security 101 course in college and the professor beat the idea of it being interesting or exciting right out of me. Steered me clear of a less engaging path (for me at least).
HelloFellowDevs··on Twitter Says CEO Dorsey Informed in Advance of Decision to Tag Trump Tweet
Hope The President doesn’t find out that Dorsey is also CEO @ Square.
HelloFellowDevs··on Remote work has its perks, until you want a promotion
I live on the east coast and I’m sort of guilty of it too. Nowadays I open my window but I have to mute myself when I hear loud traffic about to pass by. I didn’t get an A/C because I didn’t want one more heavy object to move again.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Do you think you have an actual novel idea?
What I’m currently working on is in its earliest stages at the moment, since I’ve reclassified it as a learning exercise it has been getting less of my time at the moment. Due to this, (potential) user interviews aren’t at the top of the list now.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Do you think you have an actual novel idea?
> Someone else doing the same idea is validation of your idea.

I’ll definitely take that as a motivator, especially if I feel like I can build a better solution.

HelloFellowDevs··on The boring technology behind a one-person Internet company (2018)
He was actually rejected[0] from YC when he made his original pitch.

HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I've finally gotten around to working on a idea of mine, the ability to clip podcast segments and share them. Still figuring out some stuff but the beginning stages are looking and feeling great!
HelloFellowDevs··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Mid 2012 500gb Macbook Pro 13" (Mojave) here, $90! I think I'll experiment with it more instead of trading it in.
HelloFellowDevs··on Show HN: The Front Page of Hip-Hop
Feel like this should be a 'SHOW HN:' instead of a story, but I digress. I do like the usage of the BAT from Brave, that hopefully takes care of some things. A question that has popped up for me is "can a user create their own newsletter?" sort of like subscribing to a specific users user submissions. I'm not the biggest fan of calling playlists _'mixtapes'_ because even though the definition has evolved _'a la chance the rappers "mixtape"'_ . There isn't a need to have a playlist on every streaming service but please mirror it across the most popular at least (Apple Music, Tidal).

I do have the same opinion about r/HHH, it used to be great for discussions, but now as I've grown the opinions and discussions there seem to feel more juvenile and memey. I still frequent worldstar to look for new artists sometimes.

HelloFellowDevs··on Would you give up health or location data to return to work?
Since I am among the lucky few who get to wfh during this crisis, this question isn't for me. I do have some friends who would gladly surrender that information tomorrow if that means they could 'get on with their lives'. Be that work, or social life. Their main reasoning is that they give up their data anyways, so whats another few gb's of it?
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: HNers, where do you hang out online in your spare time?
I used to spend a ton of time on Twitter, but actually nowadays I've been on Instagram a fair amount (according to the Screen Time total). Takes over a decent amount of my spare time not involved in more productive activities.
HelloFellowDevs··on Founders share the challenges of running a tech business
I had the same issue with the link on both safari & firefox, I used the readerview on firefox as a workaround.
HelloFellowDevs··on SoundCloud raises $75M from SiriusXM
What is the obvious?
HelloFellowDevs··on Off-Facebook activity
Kinda surprised how many interactions I've had tracked from my visits to Home Depot, I've only recently started stopping by there in the past year or so. What data could they have possibly even used? Sell me more cardboard moving boxes? Plant supplies?
HelloFellowDevs··on I wasted 10 weeks of my life and $1900
The subreddit r/MuseumOfReddit is basically an archive of most reddit posts. This is the very first reddit post apparently.[0]

HelloFellowDevs··on Patagonia's Philosopher King (2016)
> Incidentally, I buy clothes almost only from thrift shops, which means no Patagonia.

I don't know if you've heard about this, but Patagonia offers second-hand buying opportunities. This is the site, more or less refurbished Patagonia wornwear.patagonia.com

HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Can you enumerate ALL tools your startup uses?
Slack, Trello, Github issues, Google Calendar, Zoom, email.

Edit: I've since left that startup but it was a team > 10, 4 engineers on staff.

HelloFellowDevs··on Comparing the Same Project in Rust, Haskell, C++, Python, Scala and OCaml
Love reading your posts Tristan, a question about the choice of Rust. Was it specifically based on the previous experience you and your groupmates drew on or were these languages assigned to students? Was there any point in time where you and your team were trying to optimize your compiler?
HelloFellowDevs··on Cost of serving billions of images per month
On the note of Twitter's restriction of API usage, Jack talked about it recently on the podcast Tales from the Crypt [0]. He doesn't give any specifics but attributes Twitters early struggle with uptime to unrestricted API usage [1].

HelloFellowDevs··on Why the U.S. Chills Its Eggs and Most of the World Doesn't (2014)
I was originally introduced to the concept of non refrigerated eggs on an episode of the Netflix (branded but not) Original The Big Family Cooking Showdown [0]. They did a home visit and I thought it was weird that they kept their eggs in a box near the windowsill. Obviously since it was common practice they didn't give a background about why it's done that was in England. I've since seen more than a fair share of cooking shows based abroad that have that same unrefrigerated eggs technique, in the back of my mind I'm thinking about the general shelf life and temperature that's needed to keep the eggs from spoiling.

HelloFellowDevs··on Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix
Great.. another installer to download. I play RL on the lower (very low) pro levels, I just hope it doesn't spark a wild shift. RL has been pretty solid for it's ESports partners and I hope this only brings good things to come. Psyonix deserves it for all their hard work.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Are you put off building something because it already exists?
I had an idea, that I was going to implement over the month of May as soon as I finished my internship. I was very excited, I wrote up a pitch and mapped out the infrastructure. I just hadn't written code yet, I was saving that for when I could just write code for myself in May. This weekend someone else launched it. It's not as if I was thinking that my idea was novel, I just didn't think anyone else would get onto it let alone 'beat' me to market. I can still work on that idea for sure, but it really took the wind out of my sails.

HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Which is your favourite PG essay?
"Lies We Tell Kids"[0]

It really helped me put the whole two America's thing into perspective where some parents may have an opportunity to lie to protect kids and others don't have the time to entertain lies. At first it made me want to be a pragmatic parent when I have kids, but over time of rereading it I've realized that given the opportunity I'd probably perpetuate the same system in an effort to not have my child be the odd man/woman out.

HelloFellowDevs··on The difference between ‘broke’ and ‘poor’
Thanks I'll definitely look into that, but I think I might be on my way out of the city. I love it but I'll have to come back when I'd have the money to enjoy it.
HelloFellowDevs··on The difference between ‘broke’ and ‘poor’
I definitely think it's an NYC thing too, the COL is pretty crazy here. Rent/Metro definitely cuts into my discretionary spending. All of my friends are in the same boat, we're just all young 20 somethings who are all cash poor paying student loans.
HelloFellowDevs··on Facebook, Instagram go down around the world in an apparent outage
Funnily enough, same for me too! New Grad this Friday. Good luck!
HelloFellowDevs··on BBC Radio 2 drops Michael Jackson songs from the airwaves
This is really only the start, after the Doc comes out there will definitely be a lot of people wanting to distance themselves. It's hard to separate the art from the artist sometimes.
HelloFellowDevs··on The Supreme Backdoor Factory
Like the other comment below, we made the jump because it was where the customer base was. Slack was great for webhooks and tooling to monitor stock but in the end it wasn’t where the paying people were.
HelloFellowDevs··on The Supreme Backdoor Factory
So what does this mean for the people who have created bots for sneaker sites? I actually used to write code for those sneaker bots and run a slack group (before we all moved to discord), but I've never encountered oddities in the code builds for bots I used. This may be going over my head a bit but does this mean that the builders for the bot installs could contain malicious code?
