HelloFellowDevs··on Notion Calendar
+1 for this, I didn’t even know they had gotten acquired by Notion at all. It just updated and disappeared, this article was how I found out why!
HelloFellowDevs··on Underage Enlistment in the United States and the Confederacy
Yeah most of the time it is. They made is so you get the opportunity to select what occupational specialty instead of getting tossed into infantry or whatever the needs of the time were.
HelloFellowDevs··on I got an FBI record at age 11 from dabbling in cryptography (2015)
I think the example is in the great grand parent comment

> Oh well, 2 week suspension and kicked off the computers for less than a year. A nice conference with FBI, police, my parents, IT and school administration. Fun times.

Something that most would believe as non-malicious and just for the lolz received a (what I personally think is) heavy punishment. So as a kid you learn to just keep that to yourself because you don't know if you'll get a "oh thanks for telling us" or a "you're expelled". Its not explicitly said to distrust but you learn from experience.

HelloFellowDevs··on Law school applicants surge 13%, biggest increase since dot-com bubble
My parents steered me away from the thought of going into the trades due to the idea of working with your body/hands vs working with your mind. More or less saying "how will you be able to find work when you're physically ill/injured", of course this can happen to the mind too. For a lot of people at least the body goes before the mind does. Plus for some time my parents were in unskilled trades so maybe that was also an angle.
HelloFellowDevs··on Internet down in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., after beaver chews through fibre cable
According to wiki, you're pretty right.

> The sound of running water appears to stimulate dam-building, and the sound of a leak in a dam triggers them to repair it. [0]

HelloFellowDevs··on FFmpeg 4.4
FFMPEG is truly the best thing so far, always wish I could contribute directly but I'll stick to working on the Python wrappers.
HelloFellowDevs··on Daft Punk Break Up
Sometimes the greatest thing for many people is the ability to choose fortune over fame.
HelloFellowDevs··on Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto
Anyone know when transaction fees will get cheaper?
HelloFellowDevs··on Airbnb to Block and Cancel D.C. Reservations During Inauguration
> Today, in response to various local, state and federal officials asking people not to travel to Washington, D.C., we are announcing that Airbnb will cancel reservations in the Washington, D.C. metro area during the Inauguration week.

Makes sense, at first I just assumed it was an unnecessary blanket ban but if the area isn't condoning travel in general it checks out.

HelloFellowDevs··on Twitter suspends Trump's campaign account TeamTrump for violating its rules
Can't have someone actively avoiding a ban tweet from your handle. Oh well the game of whack-a-mole for Twitter continues!
HelloFellowDevs··on Audio’s opportunity and who will capture it
I think maybe I was projecting a bit of what I feel would benefit me as an amateur. I do think that an entry level DAW could make the case for a paid artist subscription through SoundCloud.
HelloFellowDevs··on Audio’s opportunity and who will capture it
> Today, music-making software and workflow tools remain relatively underdeveloped versus gaming and video (e.g. YouTube), but many, such as SoundCloud, Anchor and Splice, are tackling it.

It seems so odd to me that a place like SoundCloud are possibly missing out on an opportunity to have a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) built into their app. They are the hub for a lot of UGC, probably direct competition with Bandcamp. I don't know if Bandcamp has decided to tackle that route yet.

HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Why don't marketplace users cheat site and do payments offline?
Safety & Consistency.

I buy and sell clothing a decent amount, while I don't do it at a high volume I don't usually stray from marketplaces because it's curated a group of buyers or sellers who have been vetted through transaction histories that they're good to deal with.

Also the consistency of a transaction, I know that there is a third party also making sure the seller tosses the tracking number on the site or remembers to ship it at all. Versus offline may be touch and go if you don't have a history with the seller or the buyer.

HelloFellowDevs··on So you think you know Python
foo = [bar[foo]]

bar[0] = foo

false

if wrong please correct accordingly.

HelloFellowDevs··on “35-50% of clicks on Reddit Ads are fraudulent”
Yup! Dynamic Ad Insertion is gaining a bit of momentum nowadays. It's terrible if you're trying to keep note of a timestamp. An ad that was served to you one day that was 30sec can be served to you next weekend for 45sec, which would shift a lot of audio.

HelloFellowDevs··on Hiring for tech jobs has increased more than 100% in these Midwestern cities
There's the small talk version of that, but then there's the following question of "where are you really from?" if you give them a less exotic answer than they were expecting.

Edit: wording

HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: How to deal with ADHD on your own? (If you have to)
> As someone who was finally diagnosed by two different neuropsychs (involved days of testing) at 22 it's something I'll regret the rest of my life.

I don't think I understand what you meant. The diagnoses made your life worse? Or made you more aware?

HelloFellowDevs··on Applebot
One great thing with the Apple Maps UI is that when using CarPlay it gives you a 3D view of the street. So you're really seeing buildings on the left and right, which has helped me not overshoot some destinations because I can 'see' the building in the map, and then irl.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
I have my usual backpack that I use for work, so when I get ready for work I unpack my bag, plug my laptop in my dock and prep to go. Then when I'm done I pack up my bag put it away and play a podcast/music before I 'start' the rest of my day.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: What Will Replace Smartphones?
At the risk sounding like a broken record for when we talk about new platforms. What, could one imagine to be the 'Killer App' that drives most of the worlds population to AR Glasses?
HelloFellowDevs··on Street View of 1940s New York
Don't forget people with M.D. license plates, construction vehicles, and transit workers. I've had the unfortunate luck assuming all parking was treated the same, tickets have taught me otherwise.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: What are improvements that can be made on Paired Programming?
We're pretty locked into the JetBrains licensing scheme, but I'll look for stuff related to LiveShare in IntelliJ
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: What are improvements that can be made on Paired Programming?
Yeah, if only there was a plugin for code sync between editors. It would help to be more engaged from both parties.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Developers, what is the last significant thing you learned?
I've just recently committed myself to take Javascript seriously and more than a language that can work with frameworks.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Tell me about your dev machine
So I've only had it for a few days now. First reactions are:

> Super small compared to my tank of a 13in 2012, but when compared to my work laptop (17in 2020), it is also smaller in the direct comparison.

> Screen to Bezel ratio has consistently thrown me for a loop because I accidentally touch the screen when trying to open and close it.

> True tone has definitely helped with having it be easier on the eyes. I used to use Flux for that.

> Compile times for large projects have sped up visibly in my eyes.

> So I haven't been able to truly benchmark graphics wise but in comparison to running Civ 5 on either computer, the 2020 edition blows it out of the water. Along with it not having a terrible lag when switching from game to browser.

> Even with the ARM conversion, I suspect that I'll have at least 3-4 good years out of this as a side project / light AR development mobile computer so I'm happy that it'll handle an OS update gracefully.

> I've been able to use the Macbook/Macbook Air/Macbook Pro (2016-2019) keyboards, and I'm glad that that did not carry over to MBP 2020. It's the closest to having my 2012 keyboard with responsiveness (jury is still out on reliability)

> TouchID is a bonus but I haven't used it past auth'ing into my laptop or sudo sessions.

> Still acclimating touchbar, multiple taps to access items has taken some getting used to mentally.

Previously I was using a Refurbished 2012 MBP for 6 years (with HDD/RAM upgrades, battery replacement), throughout college and my first job. So this jump to a retina display, faster processor, lighter form factor is a whole new world for me.

HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: Tell me about your dev machine
Running a 2020 MBP 512gb/16gb, small jump from a 2012 with 512gb/8gb
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: How are you holding up?
Some stressors here and there, but I'm doing better than most. I'm glad I'm out of college now so I'm not strictly beholden to the whims of a college admin. Allows me to make my choices for myself instead of the existential threat of not graduating. Its given me more time to read.
HelloFellowDevs··on Apple announces it will switch to its own processors for future Macs
I think we’ve got some time. I’m on the last leg of a 2012 too. Just like the sibling comment said, since we don’t know if the pro line will get a refresh there could possibly be a longer runway.
HelloFellowDevs··on Ask HN: What are your go to SaaS products for startups/MVPs?
Guidelines[0]

There are some situations where a well crafted Ask or Show HN would qualify as self promotion. I'm not a moderator so I don't know how the rules are interpreted day to day.

HelloFellowDevs··on Harvard University Won’t Require SAT, ACT for Admissions Next Year
The issue with standardized testing that's just rolled into coursework is that it'll further incentivize teachers to teach to the test. In my opinion it could also disadvantage schools which don't have education in the highest of mind. Basically running as a daycare center in some sections.
