HexDecOctBin··on The federated code forge
Ignoring the history, does spaces solves this problem or are permissions going to remain an issue? I was thinking of doing a project that is going to require a solid permissions system and was thinking of using ATProto.

Are there any plans to add HTTPS clone/push support? For those who want to self-host their own Knots, an obvious approach is to put them behind Cloudflare. And being SSH only makes that complicated.
HexDecOctBin··on Backdoor in Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace
> Claude Code for VS Code extension on the Cursor Marketplace

So Cursor is running its own extension repository? Or is this the official VS Code repository and the incident report just happens to focus on Cursor for some reason?

HexDecOctBin··on An incremental approach to JIT construction
Sorry, can you provide the link to the course? I was not able to find it.
HexDecOctBin··on Rewriting a Commercial Engine in Jai
Blow's claim was that C++ sucks and that an alternative better suited for gamedev should be created. It's not like he's had good things to say about LLVM.
HexDecOctBin··on Fun Extending the C Preprocessor
I asked for tasteful additions :)
HexDecOctBin··on Free Pascal compiler now supports dynamic packages
Thanks, I didn't know this existed.

> There is some interesting innovation going on in the Pascal community

Links please :)

HexDecOctBin··on Teal – A statically-typed dialect of Lua
Terra is a native language that uses Lua for both meta-programming and scripting, it doesn't emit Lua VM bytecode. The actual statically-typed frontends (which are still alive) that I known of are Teal, Luon, Ravi, TypeScriptToLua and CSharp.lua.
HexDecOctBin··on Free Pascal compiler now supports dynamic packages
Last time I tried Lazarus, the strangest feature that FPC was missing when compared to Delphi was being able to declare variables anywhere (as opposed to only at the top of a block). FPC is still stuck in a very C89 model of declarations for some reason, perhaps that's just what happens when ecosystems stagnate.

What is your purpose in the new age of AI?
HexDecOctBin··on Fun Extending the C Preprocessor
Has anyone tried to extend the C Preprocessor to be a fully turing complete language (perhaps something like Snobol) to allow for Terra like meta-programming?

(I am not talking about metalang99 or Cello like stuff, which exploits the Turing tarpit of the currently specified preprocessor but rather tasteful additions to the preprocessor itself).

HexDecOctBin··on I love software rendering
Commanche was a height-map raycaster. There were no voxels to be found.
HexDecOctBin··on The Double Headed Stack Allocator
Sure, but how do you prove that you won't end up with `x' + y' > Z` for some value of x' and y'? In practice, it's always easier to prove `x < X, y < Y`.
HexDecOctBin··on The Double Headed Stack Allocator
> You might ask “why not have two stack allocators instead of a double headed one?” The main benefit is when you are memory constrained and know that the size of one stack allocator is enough to serve two systems, but the proportion of memory that goes to one side vs the other is flexible.

This doesn't make a lot of sense. Solving `x <= X, y <= Y` is much easier than solving `x + y <= Z`. If you put a limit on both the size of in-core level data (perhaps using a Cell based system) and on character data in the asset pipeline itself, that is much better than to ensure that all the various combinations of level sizes and character sizes are compatible and won't end up trampling over each other.

HexDecOctBin··on Show HN: Our space game has a built-in RISC-V emulator that runs Linux
> Object Pascal

Free Pascal or Delphi? I tried FP a while back and felt that the language had really stagnated (e.g., variables can only be declared at the top of scope like C89).

HexDecOctBin··on Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase
This is a good idea, we should start a blacklist of open-source projects that are known to have used LLMs. There should be two universes of code, one for hand-typed code used by people who care about quality and one for slop used by those making trash.
HexDecOctBin··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
That's a shame
HexDecOctBin··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
Anyone know when Rust's std::autodiff will become stable? Assuming this Rust support expands to other GPU vendors, autograd will probably be the only reason to use Slang instead of Rust anymore.
HexDecOctBin··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
No, I am asking why were Australians sending the Highlanders anywhere? By what right? Why were they leaving?
HexDecOctBin··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
> when the Australians later sent highlanders to work on coastal plantations in the 1950s, they died at alarming rates

What is this referring to? Indentured Servitude? Slavery?

HexDecOctBin··on Logo Programming
I learnt that I must be good at computers when in 4th grade, despite never having touched a PC before, I not only managed to ace my Logo class but was asked by my teacher to help out other struggling students (I am just realising that essentially made me a TA in our class). I still remember trying to understand the Pen Up and Pen Down commands from a book with no immediate access to a PC to try them on.
HexDecOctBin··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
Yeah, I had the protector. It cracked from inside, so I guess maybe the force came from the other side.
HexDecOctBin··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
Mine's screen cracked in a month. Didn't drop it or mishandled it. Be aware that is it much more fragile that a Kindle.
HexDecOctBin··on Music Theory for Programmers
How would you divide 22 in small ratios, considering that 11 is a prime number?
HexDecOctBin··on Music Theory for Programmers
West Asian maqam has 24 notes, Indian classical has 22 notes, Indonesian gamelan has 5 or 7 notes. What would be the ratios that sound pleasurable now?

What is or isn't pleasurable is a matter of cultural training, and treating them as absolute facts is what I found frustrating in the books that I was complaining about.

HexDecOctBin··on Music Theory for Programmers
As a non-musician non-Western programmer, the only music book that is making sense to me (still reading) is Robert Snyder's Music and Memory[1]. It's the first book that doesn't trick me by trying to pass cultural artefacts (notes, scales, raga, etc.) as some universal truth, or douse me in medieval pseudo-science (Pythagorean small ratios, etc.)

I am not an expert, so maybe this book has its own shortcomings which I am being blind to. But this is the first book on music I have been able to read this far without having to fight the urge to fling it against a wall.

HexDecOctBin··on Your Racist Linux Distro Is Very Nice (Scott Jennings)
Even ignoring Hansson's racism and general assholery, can Linux users please start treating OSes like infrastructure and not like costumes? Just use Mint (or Fedora if feeling adventurous) on PCs and Debian on servers. Nobody can build anything if the ground keeps shifting.
HexDecOctBin··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
It’s not clear from the post, are they supporting the Content Blocker API? In other words, can I use Adguard with Firefox now on iOS?
