HnUser12··on A/SIDE – Private photo sharing and encrypted messages
That doesn’t mean anything for the app having AI in it. Two completely different things.
HnUser12··on FindMyWeb: Apple Find My, reverse enginiered
I always worry if these will get the account banned at some point.

Also the page says own your tracker, but if we’re using someone else’s network, are we really owning anything?

HnUser12··on Show HN: BetterWispr – Free, open-source dictation for Mac
I use handy.computer in push-to-talk mode. It inserts text in the active text box when you let go. It also supports auto-submitting at the end, so maybe that would help? I think it can send new line.
HnUser12··on What is going on with ceiling fans
Interesting. I was just thinking I have never had to replace a single bulb in my apartment. I have lived here for five years and the bulbs weren’t new when I moved in.

I also have Nanoleafs that I have had for about six years and so far no issues. They run for about 12 hours a day on most days.

I am in BC,CA. I gotta take apart my lights and see what they are.

HnUser12··on Apple Pass Designer
If you’re on ios27, you can create ad-hoc passes on the phone from the Wallet app and customize it as needed.
HnUser12··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
Just got in. This is interesting! Thank you!
HnUser12··on How do traffic signals work? (2019)
I live in BC near a highway intersection and in my experience they seem to do what you suggest.

I approach from my street and if the highway is empty, almost instant green. Otherwise I have to wait some time until the road clears. During peak hours when the road doesn’t clear, it just seems to go green after a fixed time.

Apparently I cannot join. It says the world is full. Did all of HN join?
HnUser12··on Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI
I pointed at the remote of my fan and I can see it. I am on 15 Pro. However, as the sibling comment said, it is very faint so I'd guess not very realistic.
HnUser12··on Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI
Ah ok that makes sense. I just pointed at my remote and it is very very dim.
HnUser12··on Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI
I’d think so. My iPhone can see my remote’s IR.
HnUser12··on Bonsai 27B: A 27B-Class model that runs on a phone
That repo suddenly seems to have gone missing. I get 404.
HnUser12··on Meta launches Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp subscriptions
You may not get ads in the app, but they can still sell your data for other services who will give you ads.
HnUser12··on You can no longer Google the word 'disregard'
I can't read the article because it blocks me. But I see all the actual search results. Just the AI part says "Got it! Message disregarded. Let me know if you need help with anything else." and shows half a blank screen.

EDIT: I guess if you're on a smaller screen you don't see the search results on the bottom because of the AI answer blank space.

HnUser12··on We are retiring our bug bounty program
“Heads up: This is a research project — bounties listed here are symbolic and part of an academic study on open-source contribution patterns. PRs are reviewed for research purposes only and will not be merged into production. If you're looking for paid bounty work, this is not the right repo.”
HnUser12··on Removing the modem and GPS from my 2024 RAV4 hybrid
I recently switched to a carrier (Fido/Rogers in Canada). My plan limits hotspot by disabling the hotspot settings on ios. However, I was able to enable it again by changing the access point name.
HnUser12··on Show HN: Needle: We Distilled Gemini Tool Calling into a 26M Model
Did you give it an email tool? It uses the tool it’s given. HF example only has timer tool.
HnUser12··on Qwen3.5: Towards Native Multimodal Agents
I’m on Safari iOS. I had to do “reduce other privacy protections” to get it to load.
HnUser12··on NYC phone ban reveals some students can't read clocks
I don’t know about other countries, but it is taught in India in a few schools I am exposed to.

Analog wall clocks are fairly common in most Indian households.

HnUser12··on Show HN: Tommy – Turn ESP32 devices into through-wall motion sensors
Don’t the matter compatible ones work with any hub?
HnUser12··on Show HN: I built a simple ambient sound app with no ads or subscriptions
Native calculator is available on iPad now. I think starting last year.
HnUser12··on Starbucks: Location closures and elimination of roles
Bay Area isn't rest of US and Canada. Based on my limited experience most of Bay Area looks like that, not just Starbucks.

The Starbucks's near me in Canada are fine. If they get rid of the long line of mobile order people, they'd be pretty fine.

HnUser12··on PureVPN IPv6 Leak
Also Kape was formerly known as Crossrider and had alleged ties to shady apps in the past.

HnUser12··on Two guys hated using Comcast, so they built their own fiber ISP
Depends on where in the US. Most populated places have inexpensive internet. Smaller towns have these issues because there's not much competition.
HnUser12··on Show HN: Petrichor – a free, open-source, offline music player for macOS
If it's just a signing thing that Apple checks, you open run it by doing `xattr -d com.apple.quarantine filename` first.
HnUser12··on <Blink> and <Marquee> (2020)
All of that is true. However, to be fair, these are older sites. The newer ones are generally cleaner and usable[1]. Even the services provided is much more streamlined.

HnUser12··on <Blink> and <Marquee> (2020)
Lot of older India gov sites still seem to use these tags.

HnUser12··on A proposal to restrict sites from accessing a users’ local network
Looks to me like it was a bug. Not giving access to any contacts broke the app completely but limited access works fine except for an annoying persistent in app notification.
HnUser12··on Build your own Siri locally and on-device
You can now setup Vocal Shortcuts[1] which can be used to run any shortcut or action with almost any trigger word and without saying "Siri". However, I'm not certain if it can wake the device from sleep or not.

HnUser12··on Can you trust that permission pop-up on macOS?
Oh interesting, thank you! I wonder doing this will fix the issue where slack repeatedly asks admin password for updating.
