I try to be kind, honest, and fair. Sometimes, I can get a bit riled up by comments. I am sorry if I say something rude or snarky.

Hnrobert42··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
No worries. I appreciate that you actually looked it up, and acknowledged it here! It might be a first for the internet!
Hnrobert42··on Life with Down Syndrome
This sounds very difficult. There are so many people who live with loneliness. It reminds me of the "Tin Man" episode of Star Trek TNG.

I wish you well and hope you find your Tan Elbrun.

I don't think you know what nurses do.

Nurses change dressings. Insert catheters. Move heavy patients without hurting themselves. Prepare equipment for surgery. Ensure the sterile field is maintained. Operate specialized equipment. Triage medical emergencies.

And about a million other things that the average person doesn't know how to do.

Permission fatigue is real.
Hnrobert42··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
I advise a B2B startup that went from 4 developers to just the founder, who is technical but not a developer. It is now profitable and delivering just as many features with arguably better security. N=1

Our counsel is profoundly incompetent.
Hnrobert42··on 'I've applied for 300 jobs. My 25 years' experience is worthless'
This is the first I have heard of an experience like this. To what to you attribute your success?
Hnrobert42··on Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop
In my case it is the latter.

In one example, someone wanted all internal training, presentations, engineering documentation, internal policies, etc related to the use of AI to accomplish a specific goal.

I was temporarily assigned to be a kind of product manager for the project, so I have the best access to all the multiple departments with 100s of staff involved. That said, I have no authority over them. I don't know every related policy, who developed what training, what engineering documents exist in some random share drive.

It meant calling meetings with the project leads to explain the request. Then hassling them to hassle their staff to check all their drives. Reading through all that material to ensure engineering didn't screen cap PII while making a training slide or put security-sensitive details in an engineering document. There was no guidance on what is not releasable.

And we get maybe one or two of these requests a year for different projects. So it wouldn't be a judicious use of taxpayer resources to build a reliable system for answering these requests.

That surprises me. When I worked in the Uk in a regulated industry, I observed it is very risk averse and process focused. I'm surprised the government can consistently turn around a response in 30 days.

Having been on the other side, the delay may not be a deliberate strategy.

Your question likely landed in someone's inbox. The work falls outside normal scope of the person's job. There's likely zero guidance on how to answer and an implication that the person is personally liable if they accidentally reveal something that legitimately should not be revealed, like PII. And the question is competing with many other priorities in their inbox making it easier to snooze it for another day.

This is not an excuse just an explanation. I was not aware of some of this until I got here. I try hard to answer thoroughly and with as much detail as possible. Sometimes it just takes a while.

Hnrobert42··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
Agreed! That was sort of my point.
Hnrobert42··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
Not to mention quality of service. Sure, electricity is electricity. Water is water.

But outages, outage response times, infrastructure, investments, etc. are the other side if the equation.

I have no idea. Maybe investor-owned utilities also provide worse service. However, without accounting for that, the article's claims don't mean much.

That's been my experience, too. I don't remember the store worker's details, though. I'm curious how the gender of the STEM dropouts affected the process.
Hnrobert42··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
In the US, tabled means something is not going forward. Am I correct that it means the opposite there?
Hnrobert42··on The Corporate Happiness Treadmill and the Case for Doing Less
Yeah. The myth of meaningful work does more harm than good.

Plenty of people find meaning in work. They enjoy it and would do it even if they won the lottery. If that's you, then that's great.

But that will never be the cade for me. I serve organizations with missions I am proud to support. I work with reasonably smart, dedicated people. I am paid a decent amount. The work is sometimes challenging and fun. I am a consultant, so I can set my own hours.

But on any given day, I would rather do anything other than work. Go for a walk. Watch TV. Read a book. See friends.

And that's okay.

But then you only elect politicians who don't care about privacy. I'm not sure those are the people I want crafting policy.
Hnrobert42··on I am often wrong
I am confused by step 5.

A. Why define the goal after identifying the solution? Or does define the goal mean identify a stopping point for step 4, in which case you must first define the solution?

B. Isn't the goal explicit in a clear problem definition?

1) Ambiguous problem definition with no implied goal: We need more money.

2) Clearer problem definition with implied goal: We need $500K by Monday.

Hnrobert42··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
Do you have any evidence of this? The video expose that kicked off this firestorm said that if you don't actively connect to the internet, then the system is largely inert.
Hnrobert42··on She Also Found It at the Movies
Okay. I'll accept the premise that she was principally an autobiographer through film reviews. But when she was, as the author notes, not a kind or good person, why consume her autobiography?
Hnrobert42··on Watch Los Angeles get built, one building at a time (1880–2026)
Was it that a big, giant, horrible wasteland because it was undeveloped? That is, was there something bad about it other than being undeveloped? Personally, I love living in the city AND land in its natural state.

Also, GP was quoting a song lyric.
