HomeGear··on Is DuckDuckGo, DuckDuckDone?
He doesn’t want to use Startpage because “I really don’t like their purple colour scheme.” Interesting.

In terms of DDG, I wonder if a non-invasive search engine is viable. I can’t think of a company (Apple?) would has the resources to do it.

HomeGear··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Now run the numbers on gun deaths. Chicago has 30+ a weekend at times.
HomeGear··on Bolt announces layoffs
I think OP is saying, “This kind of message [would feel] more authentic to me…”
HomeGear··on Ask HN: How worried are you about the upcoming recession?
It looks like you’ve been voted down, but I agree regarding housing. The housing market is absolutely absurd. It’s time for a reset there. Majorly.
HomeGear··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
It’s hard to say if your experience is isolated to a single job. No?
HomeGear··on Volkswagen CEO says car giant will overtake Tesla on electric vehicle sales
“A lot of people” are returning their Teslas due to no messaging and game support? Unlikely.
HomeGear··on Seven Teslas have caught fire in the last four days
US resident here. I’ve never seen a handle like [0]. Every car I’ve been in has handles like [1]. I don’t know if I’d be able to get out of [0] in the event of an emergency without being made aware of it prior.
HomeGear··on Lofi.co – Relax and Focus
Same. In fact, lofi seems to really disrupt my focus. There are times where a beat/kick is so loud it becomes disruptive. I also like background sounds and true ambient music.
HomeGear··on Useless Use of "dd" (2015)
>“Well why does the entire internet say to use dd then?” Because they copy from each other just like you copied from them.

Great statement. This brings me some much needed internal clarity on my own thoughts and actions.

HomeGear··on California’s economy may seem healthy. Just wait for the next recession
>With tech in full meltdown

The stock market does not reflect the reality - in fact, you might say the market is coming back to reality. There’s been small layouts but to call it a “meltdown” is a bit much.

HomeGear··on The Verge is so bad they have me defending Apple [video]
While I have no data to support this, I don’t think “regular people” are purchasing OEM parts, renting tools for a $1,200 deposit, and risking self-repair. To me, the idea is almost absurd.
HomeGear··on Judge orders trial in Tesla autopilot manslaughter case
Here’s an important part:

>Riad had initially set his car’s speed to 77 mph; he then set it to 78 mph, and then finally changed the speed to 75 mph. At the time of the crash, the car was going approximately 74 mph.

For me, I’d convict. This isn’t a case of ‘autopilot’ as much as it’s a case where a person purposely (with intent) set his speed above legal limits and did not maintain the attention while doing so.. causing the death of two individuals on their first date.

Tragic.

HomeGear··on Some online businesses thrived during lockdown – how are they doing now?
Fitness.
HomeGear··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
> For Apple, 10m phones is peanuts. But for an independent company 10m units per year would be spectacular. If Apple kills the Mini, those people will need a new home.

Hm, I’d suspect most of the customers are more attached to the Apple iPhone than the form. I’m one, but, I could be wrong!

HomeGear··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
If that’s the case, why come back at all?
HomeGear··on Some online businesses thrived during lockdown – how are they doing now?
I worked for a company that was saved from bankruptcy due to COVID (i.e. product was instantly of high demand). Instead of using this “gift” to stabilize the company, management used it to raise their wages, hire outside consultants, and further invest in our out losing strategy.
HomeGear··on Ask HN: Is it true that any community that grows big enough, gets ruined?
I’m strongly in favor of gatekeeping. I know that’s a bad word to some but that’s how you retain focus and purpose. It used to be the “normies” that you’d shield your group from, now it’s the “normies”, griefers, and the perma-offended.
HomeGear··on Introduction to Microsoft Excel (1992) [video]
I’d agree that it’s in the top 3 non-kernel/os pieces of software. The part it plays in finance, accounting, and engineering is staggering.
HomeGear··on Ask HN: Why are people in real life so different?
>The main reason is that almost all content online comes from people who are mentally ill.

I wasn’t brave enough to say this, but since you have, I want to agree. Gaming, Discord, forums, etc - filled to the brink with mentally ill individuals.

HomeGear··on CEO pay is up 78% over the past decade
CEOs need to be compensated on business metrics - not all financial. The metrics should account for short- and long-term growth, employee retention, public relations, etc. If you tank the company, you walk away with nothing.
HomeGear··on About iCloud Private Relay
It’s fully blocked from commenting on 4chan too.
HomeGear··on See's Candies is Warren Buffett’s ‘dream’ investment
There has to be more to it. If not, a simple refusal to sell would allow you to move the market. If the sellout bundle is profitable enough, why doesn’t everyone start a generic drug company to be sold and retire rich?
HomeGear··on Ask HN: Does anyone care anymore what Google demos in IO?
No.

Google’s hardware is lackluster, their services come and go and are bloated with telemetry, their search is worse than ever, there’s no live customer support person to talk with in the event of a problem, and there’s no unified vision.

Engineering is good, leadership is abysmal.

HomeGear··on Ask HN: How do you deal with rude interviewers?
How does one determine it was a “bad day” verse a bad person? The answer to which is critical in a job acceptance.
HomeGear··on Vitamin D and Depression (2020)
You don’t know anybody happy in Portland OR? lol. What a silly statement.
HomeGear··on Why is every consumer startup selling me what I already own for 10x the price?
I agree with you. I have Bombas and Hanes socks. I don’t notice much of a difference. I don’t care about the 10x life as I don’t plan to keep my socks more than a couple years.
HomeGear··on Ask HN: Is the USA in a silent Covid wave?
I agree with most of what you said but when you compare COVID to malaria (at least in the US) it’s a bit silly. Malaria kills ~5 a year, COVID has killed ~500,000 and had life-long impacts on many more.
HomeGear··on Two workers are quadratically better than one (2020)
I agree. Plus, politics (internal) will inevitably start taking up more and more of your employees time.
HomeGear··on Amazon will pay US staff travel expenses for abortions and other treatments
To start, assisted suicide is legal in some states.
HomeGear··on Bored Ape virtual land sale breaks Ethereum
The “developed world” is who is holding the values up. Crypto is not a savings account for poor people to avoid authoritarian governments. It has no use. It’s nothing more than gambling at this point.
