HumanReadable··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
As important is to recognize that even if the price cannot be negotiated, oftentimes the service you receive can!

If the waiter seats you somewhere you don't like, don't be afraid to ask for the nicer table! At the hotel, don't be afraid to ask if they have a nicer suite you can have instead.

Often employees are not able to negotiate the price, but they have flexibility in what they can offer you!

HumanReadable··on Oxidation makes tea black
It's pretty easy to spot mold in your pu'er whether it's shu or sheng. I wouldn't worry about it.
HumanReadable··on A beginner's guide to intermittent fasting (2012)
Go try dramatically changing your weight and see how it makes you feel.

For the record I've never been obese, I'm in excellent shape and lift weights ~5 times a week. When bulking, eating enough calories to increase by weight by 25% requires significant effort. Similarly when I have do my cuts I find it incredibly difficult to get down to 10-12% body-fat.

My body clearly has a weight it wants to be at, and deviating from that requires a significant mental effort. I imagine someone obese trying to lose weight struggles the same way I do. The body wants to be at a certain size, and forcing it to change is difficult.

HumanReadable··on Mojang to Require a Microsoft Account to Play Minecraft
wow I thought it was just me with the problem!

I've been torn because I really want to play the game after almost a decade, but out of principle have not wanted to pay them twice.

HumanReadable··on 'We conclude' or 'I believe?' Study finds rationality declined decades ago
Or maybe we just use the same words to convey different things over time.

I often find myself saying "I feel like <some argument> might be the case" when it would have been just as accurate to say "I think <some argument> might be true"

I don't think it makes me any less rational to use the word "feel" over "think", what makes me more or less rational will be the content of <some argument>

HumanReadable··on Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut?
I'm 23, so I'm likely less wise than many commenters, so grain of salt!

I used to worry a lot about this, but over the time I noticed that I should expect to have slumps and peaks! It would be pretty unnatural to expect my performance to be completely consistent with no variance! Now when I'm in a slump, I know that I will eventually get out of it and that I shouldn't let it bother me too much. As long as the overall trajectory is upwards, I worry less about the monthly variance.

I have also worked out some fundamentals I always try to meet. Exercise, good sleep and a healthy diet are constants for me that I don't compromise on. I expect to slowly add more to this list as I grow older.

HumanReadable··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
Worked for IBM for three years, this is accurate. To solve some clients problem we would build an ML solution from scratch just like everyone else, and then try to shoehorn some Watson service into it so we could use the Watson Brand to distinguish our product.

The solutions we built were generally pretty good and our clients were happy, but the Watson part was never anything more than marketing,

HumanReadable··on EU Parliament pushes to ban ads targeting health, religion, sexual orientation
This is a very misleading title and should be changed. The EU Parliament has NOT banned these ads. Rather they have voted yes to the act. Unless the council votes yes as well, nothing is going to happen.

The politico title is correct, please change the title to that.

HumanReadable··on Ask HN: I suck at math, where to start?
I agree there are no shortcuts, but just like the scales will come much more easily to someone naturally gifted at music, so will algebraic operations to someone gifted at math.

We can all improve our abilities, but those not gifted has a much steeper hill to climb.

HumanReadable··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
I agree, but I still consider it a step up to what we had before. There's always been institutions whom people are told to trust. For a thousand years it was the church. I think for most people to trust credentialed scientists from government institutions is a vast step up, even if they have sorely disappointed during this pandemic.
HumanReadable··on Danish intelligence chief held over suspected info leaks, local media report
I have a feeling the computing demand for every AI use case the Danish military could want to pursue, could be met by a few mainframes with fewer security risks. Given the work that goes into verifying the data center meets some assumably very high requirements, I imagine mainframes might even be the cheaper solution too.

Seems to me like yet another example of companies successfully lobbying governments to buy unnecessary things.

HumanReadable··on Google fined €150M, Facebook €60M for for non-compliance with French legislation
his argument is that if not even the commission, which presumably would adhere to the regulation they themselves have written do it correctly, it suggests that the rules for cookies are different from what you claim.
HumanReadable··on Homelessness rises faster where rent exceeds a third of income (2018)
When a luxury house is built and a family moves there, they have to move from their old home which is presumably worse. So will the slightly less wealthy family that buy their old home, and so fourth.

That said, preventing gentrification requires an active effort from policy makers.

HumanReadable··on The Demise of Scientific American
The comment asked for things wrong with the word blacklist. I replied with a reason.

I'm not arguing for the removal of the word, I don't know why you think I am.

HumanReadable··on The Demise of Scientific American
I didn't claim we should remove the world blacklist. The comment I was responding asked for things I find wrong with blacklist, I replied with one.
HumanReadable··on Evidence for a mouse origin of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant
oh come on, there's much more basis than that. For starters, the lab was specifically working on coronaviruses!

I'm not saying it's definitely a lab-leak, but it strikes me as ridiculous to confidently claim it wasn't given the information currently available.

HumanReadable··on The Demise of Scientific American
it's less clear to non-native English speakers what the hell a blacklist is than what a deny-list is.

EDIT: the replies I received to this comment are pretty shocking to me. I'm not arguing for the removal of anything, I am only listing one issue with blacklist that deny-list doesn't have. Anything you're reading into my comment beyond that is your tribal identity projecting its insecurity.

HumanReadable··on How Dwarf Fortress is built
FPS issues is what eventually killed dwarf fortress for me. If you want to do anything interesting be prepared to watch the game slow to a crawl.

That and construction of anything being a nightmare as your dwarfs will get stuck in every conceivable way trying to build even a simple wall more than a meter high.

That said, I have spent hundreds of hours on the game with some great stories to tell so overall I can't complain too much.

HumanReadable··on Fuck Off Google
What is that distance? We can just make odds reflect that.
HumanReadable··on Fuck Off Google
Are there any odds you would be interested in betting on whether this will happen?

If so I would probably be happy to take the other side of the bet :)

HumanReadable··on The Darker Side of Aaron Swartz (2013)
Do you have any advice or wise words on how you manage this?

I find myself in a leadership position, but I feel immensely uncomfortable when directing others. In my head there's always a nagging voice that replies 'who are you to tell us what to do?'

HumanReadable··on Tinder just permabanned me or the problem with big tech
It was not difficult to get around the ban, but I wanted to point out that doing so is not allowed. Having broken no terms-of-service, I can be banned with no means of recourse. That is extremely problematic even if it is possible to cheat the system.
HumanReadable··on Tinder just permabanned me or the problem with big tech
I got permabanned when I tried logging in from my phone with oss android installed. In Tinder's defense I imagine my phone's system might have looked similar to that of spammers leading to a false-positive, so I don't mind the ban itself.

What I do mind was that their official stance is that they don't reverse bans for any reason. Creating a new account is against their terms of service, so in theory I am locked out of one of the primary ways my generation finds partners.

In the country I live, the competitors don't have user bases nearly large enough to compete so Tinder is effectively a monopoly. With Tinder's enormous market-power comes great responsibility, and they have in my eyes failed to live up to it.

HumanReadable··on Facebook reverses Kyle Rittenhouse policy
I really don't think Facebook should be in charge of making speech moderation at this level of specificity.

Social media platforms have become the public squares of the 21st century, and as such we need to treat the right for free speech on those platforms as important.

That doesn't mean we can't change these platforms to favour desirable engagement. If our physical public square were very small, everyone might be reduced to yelling to hear each other. So we make our physical public squares large and open! Maybe if we put a tree in the middle, it will calm us down and help us engage with each other.

But we will never appoint a public square moderator who arbitrarily decides what can and cannot be said. Neither should Facebook.

HumanReadable··on Reddit seeks to hire advisers for U.S. IPO – sources
In what ways do you think it's similar?

I only started reading hackernews a few years back, so I don't know what it was like in the past so I'm quite curious to hear how hackernews used to be and how it has changed.

HumanReadable··on Show HN: Voicera – Add life-like AI voice dictation to your blogs and articles
I created such an app for myself two years back. It gets fatiguing very quickly to listen to TTS, even when using state of the art stuff like Wavenet Polly.
HumanReadable··on How to Use Anki to Improve Your Memory
I believe this to be the case for any competitive endeavor.

Go players practice life and death, basketball players practice shooting hoops, football players practice dribbling.

I designed macro exercises to give my students when I taught Starcraft.

The problem with these exercises is they are rarely very fun. To be great at something, you have to put in the hours. You won't if you aren't enjoying the time spent.

HumanReadable··on The Greatest Sales Deck I’ve Ever Seen
A relative of mine who was rather famous European politician said this to me when I asked him what makes a campaign successful. To succeed in politics you should have ONE central point, otherwise nobody will remember what you stand for.

had he said there were multiple important things for a successful political campaign, I would not have remembered that conversation.

HumanReadable··on Dwarf Fortress: An actual look at graphical improvements
I picked up dwarf fortress 7-8 years ago when I was in eighth grade, and have been playing it on and off since. Performance is always what kills the game for me.

The game is supposed to be hard, but if you at all know what you're doing it's very easy to keep your fort well, and the only real risk of losing your fort is from you intentionally doing stuff that puts your fort at risk. You literally can defeat entire enemy armies by capturing them all with cage traps, for example.

This I can forgive.

Dwarf fortress is all about the crazy stupid ideas you can come up with after all. Want to build any interesting structures? Prepare for your dwarfs to get stuck every conceivable way one could possibly get stuck trying to build a simple wall. It can be incredibly tedious to accomplish something that ideally shouldn't take more than a few simple commands.

All of this I could live with. The performance without fail is what eventually kills my will to play. Want to do cool stuff with magma? Watch the game slow to a crawl. Want to run a big society? Watch the game slow to a crawl. Want to do anything remotely interesting? Watch the game slow to a crawl.

People go to obscene lengths to keep their performance, such as generating atom smashers that will 'delete' unwanted stuff from their fort completely, so the game stops wasting energy rendering 5000 rocks and how each dwarf is reminded about their childhood traumas as every rock reminds them of how their father died from a falling rock.

This game is so close to being great but falls short at the very last mile because the basic gameplay is fundamentally flawed. This is a simulator first, game second and it shows :(

HumanReadable··on Google recommends all North America employees work from home
I don't know I'd measure it, but if someone can provide a good measure, I'd be willing to bet against wfh increasing productivity.

I have a feeling a lot of value is created during casual lunch conversations.
