IncreasePosts··on Anthropic trained Claude on illegally obtained Stanford professors' books
Because it's true, and he tried when he wasn't being prosecuted. The point has that some people are unfortunately prone to chronic suicidal episodes. It doesn't make sense to blame some external factor in cases like these.

If he was cut off in traffic and then went home and committed suicide, would you say that the driver that cut him off was responsible for his suicide. You might say that's because no normal person would commit suicide over that act, but no normal person would commit suicide when offered a 6 month house arrest.

And if you were going to commit suicide because of a long prison sentence you would probably do it after you were found guilty, like the guy who drank poison right as he was found guilty of something that would put him in jail for most of the rest of his life

He was offered a 6 month plea deal. He took his own life due to depression. Something he tried to do multiple times in the past

IncreasePosts··on Stop-motion movie Wildwood is a staggering masterpiece
The only people who will find this a masterpiece are people who are not actually enjoying the movie itself, but deriving a meta enjoyment of it by constantly saying to themselves "wow, can you believe how much mastery that shot must have taken?"
IncreasePosts··on Stop-motion movie Wildwood is a staggering masterpiece
16 years to make a movie seems more like a failure of some sort - either of vision, or funding.

This is an AI post. Because it's about a data center that will host AI computers

No ex post facto is in the constitution though. And any attempt to change the laws that can be changed by Congress would have enough lead time where POTUS could pardon just before the laws changed
IncreasePosts··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
I've thought about this and I don't understand why we can have plea deals which are so radically different from the potential punishment if found guilty. Like, if the state thinks you did it and offers you a $1000 fine, how is it reasonable to potentially go to jail for 6 years if found guilty?

The state already showed that it believed that the crime was only worth a $1000 fine.

Maybe there should be a rule that whatever plea deal offered should be the maximum punishment possible if you're found guilty.

IncreasePosts··on Most advice is right for the person giving it
What percent of obese people were saying that? Who exactly are you arguing against?
IncreasePosts··on Whatever Happened to Fire Escapes
Maybe? Firefighting is extremely physically demanding, which is why you'll often see firehouses with built in gym, and rarely see a fat fire fighter. So that physical capability can be used in other circumstances.

Also, firefighters need to know how to dismantle a house quickly to support their operations. So if the door needs to come off the hinges to get grandma down the stairs, firefighters will be prepared for that and have it done in 30 seconds

IncreasePosts··on An Apology
I think it's even more classic hn to try to redefine a commonly understood word in an attempt to be pithy, and then get pissy when someone says that's not really right. I probably wouldn't have responded if your post was particularly clever. But it wasn't.

No reasonable person would say trying to get your bike back by seeing it's location and going there is stalking. Stalking has an element of intent and a pattern of behavior which simply isn't present by a property owner attempting to go to the location of their property.

Perhaps you could stalk to get your bike back, but it would be something like "I think Bob stole my bike, I'm going to follow him around and see if I can catch him with my bike".

Perhaps you could stalk your bike thief by NOT retrieving your bike, but instead letting a thief keep your bike, and you continually track and harass them with your knowledge of where they probably are with your bike.

I like to just have JavaScript disabled by default, and as I encounter a site rarely that isn't usable with JavaScript, I just explicitly allow JavaScript for that domain

It's incredible to see how fresh the web feels and how much better your battery life is when you're not running a bunch of code in every tab you have open

IncreasePosts··on An Apology
You can already stalk ..I mean find lost bikes... easily using the air tag network. Silencing the speaker is a weak way to defeat anti tracking measures, because anyones iphone will still alert them.

A better way requires a small programmable cpu with ble support - have a large number of virtual air tags which a device rotates, and also have a device which never sets the separated status byte.

IncreasePosts··on An Apology
Not really, it is just tracking your bike. Theoretically someone could have thrown the bike in a dumpster, which went in a trash truck and you aren't tracking any body.

Unless there's a bug where jellyfin or plex decides to execute a random exe it tries to index, exploitation seems unlikely.
