Rest assured, all errors in my comments are my own hallucinations, not those of an LLM.

Insanity··on Zombie stats: Where the numbers AI quotes come from
Well, 78% of all statistics humans mention are made up as well, so.. :)
Insanity··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
This definitely plays a role, and depending on your use-case the “stability” of your software and system varies greatly. E.g Messing around with mods could leave your game in an unplayable state (to the point it just wouldn’t launch properly), whilst today you just download/install them from Steam workshop with 1-click.
Insanity··on Peta releases video showing experiments on infant monkeys at Univ of Washington
This assumes that what is harmful to animals is harmful to humans. If you determine whether chocolate or strawberries are edible by their effects on dogs, none of us would be eating those :)

This is _sometimes_ true, but we will also miss opportunities by not trusting a substance that would be fine for humans but not for mice.

They do it because they are taught that way and rarely question the prevailing doctrine. There are researchers who eventually understand that animal testing rarely lead to results.

Highly recommend reading “animal liberation” if you want to learn more about it.

Animal models do not translate well to humans, something that’s been known for decades. Researchers continue down this path not because it makes sense but because “it’s always been done this way”.

This research has little real value for human medicine. If anything, animal testing might have set back human healthcare. (People have literally died by taking medicine that worked fine on animals yet severely harmed humans).

Insanity··on New iPad mini
Sure, but the parent comment is saying the “matter of time” should be in the past. I wouldn’t buy a 60hz device today.
Insanity··on The St. Helena 5 pence coin shows Jonathan, a roughly 190 year old tortoise
If they do, you dodged a bullet lol.
Insanity··on Claude Duet
I'm surprised that's still around! I probably haven't been Slashdot for a decade or so.
Insanity··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Blizzard is owned by MSFT now, so it did get bought out (back in 2022). So it fits the 'startup mode' model that I _think_ you're trying to say?

There's other studios that similar to Blizzard didn't get bought out early and published multiple hit games, like Insomniac Games.

Insanity··on Four Years with Decker
Yikes. Stuff of nightmares lol.

I guess LLMs would do a reasonable job making this legible, as long as there can be some tests to validate functionality alongside the migration.

Insanity··on Alternatives to animal testing are finally taking off
+1. I phased out meat over almost like 6 months before being completely vegetarian. It made the transition much easier when I did this about 12 years ago.

I eliminated types of meat (e.g no more chicken, then no more beef, etc). Slowly adapting my diet over time.

I think that made it easier to stick with it.

Insanity··on Alternatives to animal testing are finally taking off
Sadly that is not entirely true. Many farms will make such claims.. until secret “inspections” happen and you realize they are skirting around the rules.

In theory yes it’s better, in practice, not always.

+1. Highly recommend people read “Animal Liberation Now” (“Now”) being the 2023 version of “Animal Liberation” from the 70s.

I became vegetarian after reading the original book, and more recently _mostly_ vegan after reading “Now”. (Still a work in progress as it’s only been a few weeks and takes time to adjust my diet).

Factory Farming is definitely horrendous and it’s not only for the animals killed for meat. Animals kept for egg or milk are essentially mistreated during their entire (short) lives.

Insanity··on There's never been a better time to go into math (by: 3blue1brown) [video]
I’m both somehow.

Coding since 12, pretty introverted as a teenager and went the usual compsci route. Spent a lot of my free time hacking on OSS projects.

Then got into engineering management, similar to you I’d o enjoy mentoring and the more strategic aspects of the role.

But I dislike using AI for coding, it really ruined the fun for me. That fun being entirely eroded made it easier to commit to the management path (I did the IC-Management pendulum for some years).

Insanity··on A Tudor life in the time of plague (2020)
When we say “the plague” we often mean the bubonic plague (Yersinia Pestis) outbreak in 13th century Europe (“Black Death”). As far as I know, current evidence points to this originating in Asia as well.

Asia is probably the continent with the longest continuous “threat” of plague in recorded history.

Insanity··on Waymo in Toronto
That or the random homeless person who decides to cross the road randomly.

You’re either dodging construction site, homeless people, or just sitting in traffic.

Insanity··on Waymo in Toronto
At least in Toronto traffic they’ll mostly be capped at 10km/h, doubt they’ll have any high speed collisions with the terrible traffic here lol.
Insanity··on Delta’s Biscoff cookies were supposed to be temporary
Yeah, broodjes would be great. But I'd settle for even just decent bread lol.
Insanity··on I Know Why the Mathematicians Weep

Insanity··on Market selloff, rising rates test AI data centre deal boom
Not being a 'party trick' and being 'AGI' are wildly different assumptions. Apart from AGI being a poorly defined term, I don't see any reason why the LLM methodology has the potential to scale to AGI.

There's other avenues which are probably needed to make the cohesive AGI picture come true, such as World Models. Simply learning from text and being able to generate language is not, in my mind, the end-all-be-all for intelligence.

Insanity··on Delta’s Biscoff cookies were supposed to be temporary
It is at least easier to pronounce for non-Dutch speakers. Here in Toronto, there are a few places that put "Speculaas/Speculoos (Biscoff)" on their menu, e.g: https://www.columbuscafe.com/en/recette/cafe-latte-de-lours-....

But to be honest, as a Belgian living abroad, I'm just happy I can find it at all lol. Was surprised to even find the 'crunchy' spread in my local supermarket.

Insanity··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
I do genuinely dislike their game launcher, but also I don't want to have multiple game launchers even if it was working well given it's just overhead.

I'll happily pay to have a game on Steam vs getting it for free on Epic. Steam has been a good experience for me the past 2+ decades :)

Insanity··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
Interesting, I didn't know they moved to a Chromium based desktop application. But honestly, I don't feel like there's any performance issues with the steam desktop client (I'm running it on Fedora, but I'm assuming performance is relatively similar on different platforms).

Insanity··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
What would you even do if your tongue actually was too big lol. That sounds like a 'suck it up and deal with it' kind of situation.

Admittedly I'm too worried to google the answer :)

Insanity··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
During my yearly full dentist check up in Belgium, they never told me I needed Invisalign. During the first dentist visit in Canada they immediately told me I needed that.

I was pretty skeptical, but after 5 years of hearing that I needed invisalign from the same dentist, I finally decided to get it. Overall for any other issue she has been a great dentist and I do recommend the dentist' office. That said, I'm now about half-way through and I'm still not convinced it's not just a scam, but thankfully my insurance covers most of it.

I would 100% not recommend Invisalign based on my current experience though, it's been a real PITA. First they told me I can remove it for eating but then apparently that's not ideal in my situation, so I learned to eat with it. Which restricts what you can eat, and it gets pretty uncomfortable so eating out is a challenging. It has restricted my activities quite a bit and I need to plan around it (e.g, not comfortable going on a hike, can't grab a quick bite before the gym, etc..). And the improvement seems.. marginal at best. I've not completed it yet, but I'm not sure the inconvenience is worth it. (Before invisalign I did have a lingual wire which worked fine, it's cheap and a no-hassle kind of thing)

What do you mean "noticed"?
Insanity··on Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet
This is also why I usually order on Amazon. And the few times it doesn’t go through them the experience is often bad.

FedEx delivered my Steam Frame - first it said Friday delivery by 1pm. Then on Friday, it kept saying 1pm until about 3pm after which it updated to “by 8pm”. Then, after 8, it said the item never left their facility. The next day it said delivery would be Monday by 1pm. Actual delivery was Monday around 6pm.

Amazon _rarely_ has these issues. Especially for an expensive delivery like the above, I’d want to know when to expect it and possibly actually be at home to receive it.

Insanity··on Thunderbird for iOS
Common use case for me is tickets for events/activities that have the email attachment as ticket.

You buy the ticket some time in advance but then need to show it to enter the event.

Insanity··on The Four Colour Theorem: The first time machines mogged mathematicians
But people think it does, and it’s annoying. The past months I’ve often found mistakes and then heard the response along the lines of “oh Claude wrote that”.

It’s used as an excuse, and then the conversation just moves on. I don’t see a lot of accountability being taken. If anything, senior leadership sees it as a sign of adoption and accepts a certain level of risk.

Insanity··on Gemini 4 Argon
> Across Google and our early access partners, Argon is quickly becoming the preferred model for engineers tackling long-horizon software engineering.

"Across Google", wonder how much that is because of an effort by Google to curb usage of Anthropic models. MSFT and Meta similarly are pushing for in-house models. It doesn't mean the models are better when you push your engineers to dogfood and restrict access to other LLMs.

(Not that I know for sure this is the case, it's more of a hypothesis).
