Irishsteve··on YouTube caught making AI-edits to videos and adding misleading AI summaries
Some random team or engineer does it to get a promo.
Irishsteve··on TPUs vs. GPUs and why Google is positioned to win AI race in the long term
I thin k you can only run on google cloud not aws bare metal azure etc
Irishsteve··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
It’s an insurance company so basically pensions.
Irishsteve··on Microsoft asks all foreign staff to return to US after Trump's H1B bombshell
Would that not be a slippery slope ? Tax foreigners more if on a h1b, but not foreigners on other work visas.
Irishsteve··on European Investment Bank to inject €70B in European tech
I know people who've taken money through these routes. The biggest surprise is the paperwork; since it's public money, everything must be fully transparent, and the government needs to justify why funds went to a specific person / entity.

In contrast, private investors have more discretion and fewer stakeholders to answer to.

Irishsteve··on Arsenal FC AI Research Engineer Job Posting
Better off getting a pro contract with them I guess
Irishsteve··on GIL Become Optional in Python 3.13
Mostly projects / products that start off with very low usage thus python is perfectly fine (Why overoptimize). And then it becomes useful - and a rewrite isn't worth it.
Irishsteve··on Launch HN: Roe AI (YC W24) – AI-powered data warehouse to query multimodal data
When you say parse - do you mean for prior art or to generate ideas?
Irishsteve··on Elliott says Nvidia is in a 'bubble' and AI is 'overhyped'
True - and the 'enterprise AI' are the clouderas of the modern day.
Irishsteve··on Elliott says Nvidia is in a 'bubble' and AI is 'overhyped'
You are correct chatgpt is a great product. But if thats the only 'AI' product, or there is a handful. Those companies will focus on replacing NVIDIA ASAP. NVIDIA benefits from having a broad set of customers.
Irishsteve··on Elliott says Nvidia is in a 'bubble' and AI is 'overhyped'
Pin this?
Irishsteve··on Elliott says Nvidia is in a 'bubble' and AI is 'overhyped'
The claim that AI products will never work might be valid. But NVIDIA don't need to care about that at the moment. What NVIDIA care about is the likes of AWS who are investing heavily into GPUs so that AWS customers can determine that maybe they don't need some model with tens of billions of parameters to make a search engine for an e-commerce product that has 100 listings.
Irishsteve··on James Joyce was a complicated man
B) "From then on, Joyce lived in Europe." Isn't Ireland in Europe...?

- If someone told me they were from Europe, I'd assume they meant the continent.

Irishsteve··on Passenger tracks missing luggage to home of airport store worker

Irishsteve··on Meta used monolithic architecture to ship Threads in only five months
I think someone complained about twitter search to elon musk when he took it over saying how he could fix it easily. From memory, he left pretty quickly and said ihe was unable to fix it
Irishsteve··on Greece, Argentina and India are the fastest improving business environments
I've been keeping an eye on Greece as they started to introduce benefits for foreign capital / workers similar to what Portugal did. I've a feeling this is why Greece is seen to be doing so well. If it ends up being like Portugal, it will be foreign investors and a select few locals that benefit the most.
Irishsteve··on Ubisoft Employees In France have gone on a Strike
Then move to France or Scandinavia. I'd suggest Norway since they have a huge oil reserve so the country can sustain its current population.
Irishsteve··on Oslo acquires ChatGPT for 110k students and teachers
I wouldn’t be surprised if the deal was somehow done via Microsoft and some contract they already have with the Norwegian government. This is how certain ms tech end up with the Irish government so quickly.

Mistral , open source etc do not have a sales force. Shame really

Irishsteve··on Citigroup Plans to Cut 20k Jobs
Citi used (And maybe still are not sure) to be the biggest retail bank in the world. I'm not sure how exactly that was quantified but I'd assume its related too phsyical footprint. If thats the case I could see mid and back office functions ballooning
Irishsteve··on Push notifications – What to push, what not to push, and how often
I'm in Europe. They have to tell us they want marketing messages otherwise its against the regulations and would result in fines. We followed those rules!
Irishsteve··on Netflix never used its $1M algorithm (2012)
I might be mis-remembering this part - but I believe napoleon dynamite had its own algorithm in the ensemable because it was a tricky one to predict the rating for.
Irishsteve··on Netflix never used its $1M algorithm (2012)
Yes - from what I remember the team that came second lost out due to something like 6 decimal places and the time diff in submission. It was pretty close!
Irishsteve··on Push notifications – What to push, what not to push, and how often
I'd say its a grey area in our case. The user isn't using a "tell me when discounts happen" feature, but rather a favourites feature where some of our marketing said to favourite things to get a discount.

Another instance but via notification was that someone would lose their product if they didn't complete the transaction (24 hours notice). This wasn't a lie - we reserved inventory for 24 hours for a buyer as it was a unique product. Versus something like booking which is eternally telling me someone else is about to reserve the room I'm considering renting.

Irishsteve··on Push notifications – What to push, what not to push, and how often
Depends. We had a system that someone would favourite a product they are interested in, and when it went on a meaningful discount (20% or more) we would send them a notification letting them know. This had pretty good engagement compared to just shooting notifications out.
Irishsteve··on US spent more on health care in 2022 than 6 countries combined with universal
It’s not quite as apples to apples comparison. To employee someone in different EU countries the organization pay an extra 20-30% on top of the gross salary. And if we wanted to be more accurate we could factor in statutory time off.

You also factor in a percentage of their salary incase you need to exit them (maybe doesn’t apply to doctors). I’d assume the states is still ahead but not as drastic as the shared numbers

Irishsteve··on Ireland Hate Speech Law Would Make It Illegal to Possess 'Reckless' Memes
The bill has a section describing interpretations and application. I think the area the news story is referring too is: 'Offence of incitement to violence or hatred against persons on account of their protected characteristics'

The news company reporting the article is from Florida as far as I can see. There are pretty different laws between USA and Ireland. I'd sum the main differences up as you can't just go and say what you want if its not true, or discriminative in most countries in Europe.

Irishsteve··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
Maybe the personal issue was Ilya and sam was saying to one board member he has to go and to another he is good.
Irishsteve··on Vespa.ai is spinning out of Yahoo as a separate company
for comparative purposes snap do 4b a year and are a bit flat, same as Pinterest. Last 10k I saw from yahoo is 2016 where they also did 5b top line.
Irishsteve··on Tinder Offers $500-a-Month Subscription to Its Most Active Users
Tinder claims to have 75m users, so even if 0.1% of users take this up its an extra 50m-ish. I'd say thats the main point. Monetize the people that are potentially addicted somehow.
