JTbane··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
I have seen these at mall kiosks advertising "free cable", and today I learned they are proxying from your home network.
JTbane··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
You've uncovered the kernel of the software industry- if it works well enough, don't touch it. This is why legacy software hangs around for longer than it should.
JTbane··on Microsoft's Canada timezone troubles leave admins fixing calendars
That's interesting because I work in industrial data and pretty much everything is stored and logged as UTC to avoid these kinds of mess ups.

best practice for a real calendar app was to store in local time with time zone, not UTC with offset
JTbane··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
What enrages me is the longstanding precedent that the government cannot read your letters without a warrant, but apparently electronic messages that are directly analogous are fair game.
JTbane··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
The security research is probably the biggest reason to use local models as it seems like the big service providers will ban you for life if you even hint at doing that.
JTbane··on Sam Altman: 'I No Longer Think We're Gonna Be Able to Just Patch All the Bugs'
Honestly, it's not a terrible idea to start asking people to run AI agents as a red team to find vulnerabilities.
JTbane··on How Protein Took over the World
I mean this is not a bad thing, I personally feel more sated eating protein-enriched food and am less likely to snack excessively.
JTbane··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
I stand corrected, thanks. Definitely reboot or power off.
JTbane··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
I think it's prudent for everyone to turn off your phone or put it into Lockdown mode (which I think is the same as Before First Unlock) while going through security checkpoints. This applies to anyone in the world.
JTbane··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Personally, I take everything he says and does seriously. I advise non-citizens visiting to turn their social media to private and bring a burner phone to immigration checkpoints. For citizens, turning off your phone should be enough.
JTbane··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
There are some amazing examples of procedural generation though, such as Minecraft terrain and the orcs from Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
JTbane··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
There is no reason not to use propane or butane, they have low global warming potential and is cheap. The fire risk is overstated, no one thinks twice about carrying a lighter in their pocket.
JTbane··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
I have some beef with the sunscreen people, mostly because of 3 things:

- Skin cancer is by far the least deadly type of cancer and nearly always just requires some low-risk skin removal.

- Getting a light tan feels amazing. Your whole body feels warmer.

- Vitamin D.

JTbane··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
I don't know about you guys but if I started timing my sauna visits, I would get MORE stressed out.
JTbane··on Just because a game is on disc doesn't mean it will work in the future
Also you can resell Switch cartridges.
JTbane··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
You ever hear of Dubai lamps? Apparently underdriving LEDs makes them last much longer.
JTbane··on So you want to use plants to reduce CO₂
Sadly I am a bit hopeless about climate change. Even if every person on earth dropped everything and started making biochar to be buried it would not sequester enough carbon to make a difference.
JTbane··on My security camera shipped a GitHub admin token in its login page
>Anyone who cares about security

I have something hilarious to tell you about IoT apps

JTbane··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
> quitting my fully vested tech job to fuck off and be a cook for a while

I am also fantasizing about this and am only holding off from doing it because of the social stigma (what idiot would quit a well paid full-time job). My biggest issue with the software industry is the feverish shiny-new-thing syndrome that AI is causing (and my current company is all in on this, with "Hyper-Velocity Engineering" panels). Maybe I don't want to move at light speed and would rather stop and smell the roses.

JTbane··on Claude Code Is Steganographically Marking Requests
I would guess it is to avoid model lock-in.
JTbane··on Have You Restarted Your Computer This Week?
There are enough crappy win32 applications that you probably should restart Windows PCs nightly.
JTbane··on A US military exercise to launch a satellite on short notice
I hope I am not alone in thinking the military needs to be defunded in the USA. Nuclear weapons mean that there is zero strategic threat and any future wars will be regional. Drawdown of oversea bases is long overdue.
JTbane··on Anthropic apologizes for invisible Claude Fable guardrails
I would guess prevention of using Claude as a pentesting or hacking platform. This could mean that every script kiddie out there would be a massive risk.
JTbane··on Mercedes‑Benz starts large‑scale production of electric axial flux motor
I would hope that librarians vet those and exclude them before they hit the shelves :(.
JTbane··on Mercedes‑Benz starts large‑scale production of electric axial flux motor
I've starting going back to books, either at the library or e-books. Librarians are very good at telling you if nonfiction is biased, outdated, or incorrect.
JTbane··on CEOs who think AI replaces their employees are just bad CEOs
You don't need custom built anything, ChatGPT could generate corporate initiatives and PR statements all day and no one would notice.
JTbane··on Astronauts told to return to ISS after sheltering over air leak repairs
They did use space tape (Kapton) and epoxy for that weird case with the hole drilled in the ISS.
JTbane··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
I'm experiencing a similar thing- company pushes online lectures but don't even think about putting them on the sprint board.
JTbane··on I Am Retiring from Tech to Live Offline
brother I've thought about the tech to blue collar transition too. for me, I would choose plumbing or electrical, but it seems like 4 years of low apprentice wages are unavoidable.
JTbane··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
For what they are worth, nuclear weapons are still preventing large-scale conflict between world powers.
