JamesAdir··on Like digging 'your own grave': The translators grappling with losing work to AI
You've moved to different country with a language that is vastly different from yours. Let's say you're an American moving into the Czech Republic. You need to sign an important document that has legal and business ramifications. Would you trust an AI translation on the document or ask for a professional to be in the loop?
JamesAdir··on New YC homepage
[1] “A formidable founder is one who seems like they’ll get what they want, regardless of whatever obstacles are in the way.”

Obstacles are also any legal constraints that will break and pay later in fines, like Airbnb.

JamesAdir··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
Interesting take I haven't heard so far. Any sources for this?
JamesAdir··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
This is an optional add-on product. Your comment made it look like it’s part of the TV.
JamesAdir··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
Source about Sony?
JamesAdir··on Self-hosting my photos with Immich
Why not encrypt your server? Or store the photos on an encrypted partition?
JamesAdir··on [dead]
How is this related to HN?
JamesAdir··on AI World Clocks
I believe that in a day or two, the companies will address this and it would be solved by them for that use case
JamesAdir··on James Watson has died
This is the first time I found out that she was credited. Thanks for that.
JamesAdir··on Visible from space, Sudan's bloodied sands expose a massacre of thousands
So strange that I haven’t seen global coverage of this crisis on a daily basis, or demonstrations for “Free Sudan” on campuses. If anyone has a theory about why this humanitarian disaster doesn’t receive the same attention as Gaza, which didn't have such events, please feel free to share.
JamesAdir··on Retiring Windows 10 and Microsoft's move towards a surveillance state
> The AI tool Co-pilot is installed and enabled without consent. Removal is difficult or nonexistent.

As much as I agree with the article's general tone, uninstalling Copilot is actually quite straightforward and easy.

JamesAdir··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
Windows 11 Pro is similar in not-including all the MS junk. The updates are another thing.
JamesAdir··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
I'm always suspicious of a long list of affiliate links in one article.
JamesAdir··on Germany outfitted half a million balconies with solar panels
The energy savings are great, but it makes buildings super ugly. Why not putting them on roofs?
JamesAdir··on Amazon fined $2.5B for using deceptive methods to sign up consumers for Prime
As a non-US based customer, I can totally relate. Even though prime is not really applicable to me (in terms of free shipping, a small selection of the media libary, etc), I'm still getting pushed to try Prime each time I try to shop at Amazon.

The main problem is that unless it's a specific brand store, with products sold and shipped by Amazon, all the other products are pure junk. I can easily find them on AliExpress with much lower prices.

JamesAdir··on ‘No Other Land’ consultant Awdah Hathaleen killed by Israeli settler
What do you mean the political climate? The current government is based on a majority. Although some parties in the opposition are trying to undermine the government actions, they are mostly hold exact or very similar views on the issues. When the opposition were in charge with Bennett as the PM, there was no major change in the state/security issues, the main arguments are more on "internal" affairs. ? After Oct 7, you'll find very little people interested on what is happening in Gaze. You can also see that the Palestinians in the West Bank are not interested in what's happening in Gaza. Almost zero disturbances or protests about it, even in cities like Ramahllah which enjoys a complete autonomy.
JamesAdir··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
Can you point out to any action about the removal of West Bank arabs? There are an estimation of 2.5-3 million arabs there. There is actually a country for these people and this is Jordan. Since in '48 the arabs didn't accept the two state solution then, they are forced to live in a country which is not for them.

Also, could you please point out where are they refugees from? '48 is 77 years ago, how is the 2nd and 3rd generation are still refugees? There are no other people in the world who claim to be refugees in the 2nd and 3rd generation.

JamesAdir··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
Well, as long as Israel is fighting Iran's terrorist proxies, the U.S. must stand by her.
JamesAdir··on Why does a fire truck cost $2m
Unfortunately, terror finds it's ways regardless of what the attacked country does or doesn't do. Can you explain for example why the Yemenis are closing the shipping passage near Yemen?
JamesAdir··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
Those laws aren't about free speech but about boycotting a specific country, if we want to be precise.
JamesAdir··on Why does a fire truck cost $2m
If those 2 missiles can change the course of planned attack similar to 9/11, then it might be not daunting at all.
JamesAdir··on The Cat's Meat Man: Feeding Felines in Victorian London
Thank you for sharing this wonderful gem. It was a splendid read!
JamesAdir··on Ask HN: Startup getting spammed with PayPal disputes, what should we do?
Sorry for the noob question, but how can Docker help remediate the situation? I'm currently learning about DevOps.
JamesAdir··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
I don't understand how Telegram is still around. The app has zero support, even for paid users. You can't rely on it, and unlike Meta products, where at least there is someone to escalate to, in Telegram it's nonexistent. My account was taken over by a malicious actor, and I can't get it restored no matter how many emails and DMs on X I've sent them. Zero response
JamesAdir··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
I've recently tinkered with creating an automated install script for a home server. It was good practice for me and I want to setup a small home server with pihole, sonarr and so on. I've created it with Claude and ChatGPT and both preformed poorly. Huge chunks of code, that might be running, but creates much more mess than it should. Only after going and reading the documentation the old fashioned way and with the help of search, I was able to reduce the size of the script and solve many problems with it.
JamesAdir··on Android XR
I think that's exactly the reason why they've brand it under "Android" and not as a product for mass market. Seems more like a platform for other vendors and just a proof of concept, than a real product they might want to move forward with.
JamesAdir··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
Israel is not pretending. They've let in tons of aid, that is stolen by Hamans constantly. I want to remind you that an American soldier has died during the built of a humanitarian port by the US navy.
