JamesBaxter··on Ask HN: What Happened to Pinboard (Dec '22 edition)?
We worry about the “bus problem” when it comes to one dev operations but should we also worry about the “dev getting bored” problem?

I’m not sure what’s happened to Pinboard I hope Maciej is alright.

I tweeted him ages ago asking about if the pin a URL page could become responsive so I don’t have to use a separate mobile app. He’s responded with a joke. Years later and I’m still using the mobile app.

JamesBaxter··on Continuous Load Testing
I’ve tried building in load tests to releases and it’s been a headache so far: Test environments cost as much as prod environments suddenly (using premium versions of infrastructure to meet requirements)

Pipelines take a lot longer to run (because the load test environments are expensive we have one or two and serialize test runs on them to stop test runs stepping on each other, but the teardowns are slow, especially on failed runs)

To keep the test run fast we limit them to about 5 minutes but this creates unrealistic expectations of how fast our code would actually need to scale.

But it is nice knowing which changes have broken the load test. Hunting them down is so painful.

What I’d to have is proper metrics showing how close we are to our Non Functional Requirements over time to make it easier to sell “Performance stories” ahead of breaking the NFR rather than just fixing it as we break.

JamesBaxter··on 1960s Bike Buses Used to Transport Cyclists Under the Thames
I still can’t believe that the Silvertown Tunnel, the next Thames crossing will require a modern version of this rather than have a dedicated cycle space.

I appreciate cycling close to cars in a tunnel won’t be pleasant but we are slowly moving away from the internal combustion engine, the air will get better and better as electric gets more popular.

JamesBaxter··on Godot 4.0 will discontinue visual scripting
It’s been merged into master [0] I think that means it’s coming with 4.

One of my minor concerns is that exporting to iOS/Android might not be coming straight away but I’ll have to play with it to find out!

JamesBaxter··on Godot 4.0 will discontinue visual scripting
Trying to get my Godot project to a stable enough place that I can try early dotnet6 builds.

It’s been quite fun abstracting as much game logic as possible into testable class libraries so I’m hoping it won’t be a bad migration for me.

Really looking forward to seeing if dependency injection will be easier

JamesBaxter··on Ask HN: Is there a spiritual successor to del.icio.us?
Using it on an iPhone 12 Mini-Firefox and the “Add Bookmark” screen is a tiny form in an ocean of white emptiness.

JamesBaxter··on Ask HN: Is there a spiritual successor to del.icio.us?
I really like Pinboard and Maciej but Pinboard feels forgotten.

Even the Pinboard blog URL [0]he linked to in his leaving Twitter tweet[1]is showing the Apache Default page to me.

I know there are a couple of good mobile apps for Pinboard but I’d much prefer just being able to use the site on mobile

JamesBaxter··on Tell HN: Spotify Premium is full of Ads
Stuff like Spotify trying to ram their podcast platform down my throat is pretty obnoxious. I wish I could turn off podcasts.

It looks especially bad when some of the podcasts are unofficial audiobooks releasing for instance a person reading a chapter of Harry Potter every day.

JamesBaxter··on Can a laptop from 2012 be a viable home server?
I’ve used laptops for this purpose in the past but I always disliked having my HDDs connected over USB. I was concerned that all my storage felt like it was active all the time even when not being accessed, I was always concerned my drives would burn out faster but I never had any data to back it up.
JamesBaxter··on London’s Lost Ringways
Interesting to read in the current context of the Silvertown tunnel currently being built despite complaints from both sides of the river and an admission from TFL that it may make traffic worse south of the river.

Not to mention the fact that cyclists can’t use the tunnel…

JamesBaxter··on The myth of the driverless tube train
So to keep TfL afloat the government has to give them money and as part of that they have to spend a large amount of money investigating something most people don’t think is viable. Seems like a good use of public funds.
JamesBaxter··on Police bust 'biggest' video-game-cheat operation
I think a lot of malware also gets installed whilst pretending to be something for cheating. Developers don’t want their brand associated with that.
JamesBaxter··on Godot Engine Web Editor
Anything that helps the web export progress sounds like a good idea to me, I think there’s a lot of potential in that feature.

Being able to play game demos in the browser before installing the full version if you like it would be nice.

But for developers themselves I think it would be really cool to see the output of the tutorial you’re following before you start. It would be pretty motivating to see what’s coming and I think it could help get across some of the concepts which can be difficult in game dev.

JamesBaxter··on Uber secures right to continue operating in London
There are so many adverts for Uber in London now, including buying the naming of the already existing Thames Clipper boat service [1] (previously MBNA Clippers).

I think they are worried about the competition and spending a lot to be the first company you think of (after TFL) when you think about traveling in London.

JamesBaxter··on Google Drive – How do I stop others from sharing files with me?
It’s amazing how spammers will use every single vector to send stuff to us. I suppose if the cost of sending it is so low they have nothing to lose even when the take up is very low.
JamesBaxter··on iPhone 12 Models Won't Include Charger in Box, Power Adapter Sold Separately
I suppose that if you’re upgrading to iPhone and already have one it is a waste to give you yet another charger. I wonder how much energy is used creating these cables that often go straight in a drawer because the previous cable is already conveniently plugged into the wall.
JamesBaxter··on UK virus-tracing app switches to Google-Apple model
Is this the real reason why the app seemed like it was suddenly going to be delayed?

JamesBaxter··on Good coders borrow, great coders steal
I read this article on vice gaming earlier about giving credit to creators for assets used in development that I thought was interesting...

https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/qj4pzd/how-we-assign-cred...

For me it just comes down to the license, I’d probably credit an artist for their work if I used it in a game but if the license doesn’t say that then there’s no onus to right?

If I like the stuff enough to use it in my project then The creator deserves some recognition, is there a reason not to?

JamesBaxter··on Boris Johnson uses search terms in interviews to hide negative articles?
This is an interesting idea but is it possible that in this case the reason the top story has changed is because it’s newer?
JamesBaxter··on Godot 3.1 Released
Also worth noting that you can't currently export C# projects to mobile that was moved to milestone 3.2
JamesBaxter··on Designing an audio adblocker
I probably wouldn't use this as I would feel bad about it but as a UK listener I've listened to SO MANY adverts from American podcasts for products I can't buy.

I pay for stitcher premium and export the feed to an app that's actually useable.

I recently paid to support Thrilling Adventure Hour on patreon and find it pretty crappy they still have adverts on the paid feed.

JamesBaxter··on The health-technology sector overlooks women and their bodies
I don’t know if it’s sexism or not but is it possible that Fitbit and Apple Watch aren’t so good at tracking your movement/steps when your arms are stable whilst pushing a pram? I think a lot of the data comes from your vertical movement as you walk.

Maybe they just can’t track it.

JamesBaxter··on Reasons You Should Put the Mouse on the Left If You’re Right-Handed
I move my mouse to either side so I don’t have issues with the general concept but this is nonsense and is just to pad the number to an even 10.

“It makes you a more interesting person”

JamesBaxter··on Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro
I’m pretty sure all the MacBook feet are exactly the same, certainly the MBP line are. They could store 10000 rubber feet in a pretty reasonably sized box....

I was amazed when two of the feet on my 2014 MBP came off on the same week.

JamesBaxter··on “Swatter” Tyler Barriss Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter
My perspective from the U.K. is that it’s primarily the swatters fault but the terrible action taken by the police is somewhat “allowed” by US society due to fear of guns being available.

I was trying to figure out how prevalent swatting is in the U.K. and if it could go this wrong. At least here the police don’t have to be as afraid of an armed defence which gives them less of an excuse for overreacting

JamesBaxter··on Fixing the MacBook Pro
That’s crazy to me! I’ll stick with my iPhone 7 and 2015 MBP
JamesBaxter··on Fixing the MacBook Pro
If you buy an iPhone today does it come with a USB C or USB A cable can I plug my new phone into my top of the range laptop?
JamesBaxter··on Giving you more characters
Presumably there are going to be a lot of broken 3rd party plugins on people’s sites(design wise at a minimum). Should there have been more of a warning period?
JamesBaxter··on Ask HN: How do you deal with piracy?
I would imagine a lot of pirated software is taken from versions stolen from creators so there was no original purchase.

Also buying second hand is completely different as one second hand DVD can't be shared amongst millions of people. It's a completely different scale...

Was also interested to read about the PLR

https://www.plr.uk.com/allAboutPlr/whatIsPlr.htm

JamesBaxter··on Ask HN: How do you deal with piracy?
That makes 0 sense to me. Presumably an author can pick a publisher that does or doesn't distribute to libraries. Even then a library is still buying at least one book if not multiple.

If a creator stopped making software you pirated because it wasn't sustainable would you feel guilt?
