JosephHatfield··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
I've played World of Warcraft since the first Beta and it's been a great ride, at least up until the last expansion. The news of Microsoft's acquisition has me hopeful for great new MMORPG.
JosephHatfield··on Category Theory: Lecture Notes and Online Books
Thanks for the recommendation. Found it available for free download at David Spivak's homepage on MIT's Math department website
JosephHatfield··on Who Invented the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich?
Here's my recipe, adapted from numerous others found on YouTube:

1: Cut one red onion along the grain to minimize cell damage, 2: Simmer the onion slices in water a few minutes to soften them, 3: Put the slices into a 16oz mason jar, 4: Fill the jar half with white vinegar and half with water, 5: Add a pinch or two of Diamond Crystal salt and a pinch or two of cane sugar. 6: Refrigerate overnight.

The onions turn a beautiful shade of pink as they age and they can last for weeks without going bad.

If you like PB and Pickle, then you should definitely try PB and pickled red onions. It's surprisingly good.
JosephHatfield··on Stephen Sondheim on How to Do a Crossword Puzzle (1968)
Modern-day NYT crosswords are much more like the "British" crosswords described in the article in that they are are often chock-full of clever, cryptic clues.

JosephHatfield··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
Capital Police opened the security line, encouraged the "protesters" inside, and were even shown having selfies taken with them. What other conclusion can you reach than that this was supported if not organized by someone with authority over the security forces sworn to protect the Capital? If true, this is Sedition.
JosephHatfield··on How to delete all your files
Microsoft Windows actually provided a transactional file system called Transactional NTFS (TxF)in Windows Vista. However, due to the complexity and lack of widespread use, it has since been deprecated.
JosephHatfield··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
I believe the Telegram app has a peer-to-peer feature that allows communication to be routed through other devices rather than requiring communication with the Telegram servers
JosephHatfield··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
Just saw in the WSJ: "Microsoft has paused negotiations to buy the U.S. operations of the video-sharing app TikTok after President Trump said late Friday he opposed the deal, according to people familiar with the matter."
JosephHatfield··on Broot – A new way to see and navigate directory trees
Strange that Chrome doesn't appear to trust broot.exe. When that binary is downloaded, the downloaded file message is: broot.exe is not commonly downloaded and may be dangerous.

JosephHatfield··on Elon Musk Settles SEC Fraud Charges
The SEC press release reported that the settlement requires that Tesla put in place additional controls and procedures to oversee Musk’s communications. That seems likely to include controls over his Tweets.
JosephHatfield··on APL matrix product operator
Some implementations of APL allow for definition of arbitrary dyadic functions which can be composed using the inner product operator. For example, if a and b are conformable, you can write a f.g b
JosephHatfield··on Apple's AirPods and Live Listen are a revolution for the hearing impaired
Is this enabled in the iOS 12 Beta 3? I can't find it.
JosephHatfield··on How to Fall Asleep in Two Minutes or Less
When I was younger, and living in an unconditioned house in central Florida, I used to sleep with a big box fan at the foot of the bed pointing directly at my feet. It kept me cool and kept the mosquitos at bay as well
JosephHatfield··on Ask HN: What are the best way to learn advanced SQL?
Check out Joe Celko's book, SQL for Smarties; There are some mind-blowing SQL techniques in that book.
JosephHatfield··on Protecting Google Cloud customers without impacting performance
The Project Zero staff along with other researchers are almost certainly keeping up with the latest papers in the field. I think it's not unlikely that these papers would lead them all towards the same set of interesting related unsolved problems.
JosephHatfield··on Game Critic Uses Workaround for YouTube's Copyright (2016)
Here's an exercise for the reader. Record a short video of anything, and ensure that the soundtrack is of you playing random notes on any instrument of your choosing. Then, upload the video to YouTube, and count the number of minutes before you receive the inevitable copyright infrignement claim.
JosephHatfield··on The beginning of the end for copper wire
Shortly after I moved into my current place, I wanted to switch to the most basic copper-based landline service available, and I had to work through a series of six service reps and managers before someone would even acknowledge that such a plan was available. Since then, I get monthly mailings and quarterly phone calls from them strongly encouraging me to sign up for some fiber-based service. So far, I've resisted, but I fear this ruling may signal the beginning of the end of my inexpensive, reliable, phone line.
JosephHatfield··on Visual Studio Live Share
This seems super helpful when swarming compared to squeezing everyone on the team into one office. Will collaborators all be required to be running admin level accounts? That might be a problem in shops (mine!) where admin access is rarely granted to devs.

JosephHatfield··on Why doesn’t the clock in the taskbar display seconds? (2003)
I concur. I think it would be a great option if users could specify the granularity of time they wanted to see. I'd probably set mine to 30 minutes.

JosephHatfield··on Ask HN: What is something you do for clients that consistently blows them away?
Newer versions of Excel will warn the user of possible file corruption if they try to open an .html file that has been renamed to .xls. The file can still be opened but the warning is bothersome.
JosephHatfield··on Dreaming in Reverse Engineering
I've heard this described as focused vs diffuse mode thinking. Focus on a problem for some time then move on to something else to allow the diffuse mode to continue the work.

Salvador Dali used this method by sitting in a chair while holding a key in his hand. He would then try to nap in that position. When the key would fall from his hand onto a plate he put next to the chair, the sound would wake him up and he would often have fresh ideas about his problem.

JosephHatfield··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
I don't see how elections themselves aren't term limits. You want to end someone's reign, vote them out. Am I missing something?
