KLexpat··on Military seizes control in Myanmar
It was nearly a golden age in indochina. People in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, (South) Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, etc experienced incredible and permanent improvement in living standards

but yeah it wasn't that great anywhere south of cancun or cairo

KLexpat··on Military seizes control in Myanmar

They killed far more than that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_mass_killings_of_19... 1965–1966, 500k - 1m

Despite what western media outlets say, this is not necessarily a bad thing. Military juntas are often a good/restorative part of government in countries like Thailand and Myanmar, and are well received by the general public.

Doesn't mesh well with washington kissinger pastiche though

KLexpat··on The untold story of ‘circle of trust’ behind world’s first gene-edited babies
It is being allowed with proper oversight. These people are just experimenting underground.

The problem with this tech isn't just the Übermensch (or should I say, ÜberTiāncháo) that we will have to deal with, but more subtle. For instance, a percentage of northern europeans are already partially genetically immune to HIV/AIDS [1]

People with sickle cell anaemia are already somewhat immune to Malaria [2]. Some gibbering genius in a laboratory might decide to cure the human race of Anaemia and inadvertently cause millions of people to start dying of malaria or dengue.

There are plenty of "problem" genes that we carry in our genome that scientists will want to "fix", and then we will discover the hard way why those genes are there in the first place. This absolutely needs to be controlled. The coming man will not be an Übermensch, but a CRISPR-castrato

The real question is why are people incapable of regulating their own behaviour. It's convenient to say that talking about hanging politicians encourages this behaviour, and contributes to it

End of the day though -- why should my speech be held as responsible for another persons conduct?

KLexpat··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
It won't, but the media will blame it on the alt-right. "White privileged mcdonalds workers oppress poor minority new york billionaires with their greedy market manipulation! "

the word retard is common parlance in many parts of the world.

But lets not be retarded about this, the point is more that they are using a puritan argument about the word retard in a retarded manner in order to shut down discourse, to try and retard the share price of a stock, which has had absolutely retarded performance lately.

KLexpat··on Resurgence of Covid-19 in Manaus, Brazil, despite high seroprevalence
Do you think this could effectively render vaccines completely useless, if they have novel spike proteins that aren't targeted by the vaccines?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, this is not my knowledge domain.

KLexpat··on [dead]
Good point, I will edit it to say recommended in the american journal of medicine.
KLexpat··on [dead]
>The AJM hasn't recommended anything. AJM has published a paper titled "Pathophysiological Basis and Rationale for Early Outpatient Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Infection". >It hasn't published it "now". It has published it back in August of 2020.

"The American Journal of Medicine, Vol 134, No 1, January 2021", Page 18, shows a treatment algorithm for Covid-19-like and confirmed Covid-19 illness, specifying 200mg of Hydroxochloroquine for patients over the age of 50 or with a single comorbidity.

I'm not talking about the primary study on HCQ, but the treatment algorithm is recent.

KLexpat··on [dead]
Hi HN,

I thought this was quite interesting; after considerable negative coverage in the news-media, now an article in the American Journal of Medicine has recommended treatment of 200mgof Hydroxochloroquine per day for Covid-19 patients.

Negative media coverage has continued until quite recently:

KLexpat··on Toyota's game-changing solid-state battery en route for 2021 debut
Battery tech wasn't that good back then. I think the consumer electronics battery boom (i.e. putting batteries in cellphones, laptops, etc) has advanced the tech considerably. Not my area of expertise though
KLexpat··on Toyota's game-changing solid-state battery en route for 2021 debut
Toyota is in a much better position than E.U. or U.S. manufacturers, except for Tesla.

In the early 00's, the EU introduced emmissions regulations focused on Carbon, which didn't take sulphur into account. That's why Volkswagen and others like Mercedes focused so heavily on small diesel turbo engines, and explains the 2005-2010 or so diesel vehicle boom.

American manufacturers mostly just made big gas sonking vehicles running on petrol

Japanese manufacturers developed the Prius and other hybrid-electric products and were early to the game. Remember that the Toyota Prius Hybrid Electric vehicle was released in 1997. 1997! They currently sell four million units a year of Prius alone, and definitely have the knowledge + capacity to mass produce EV's

KLexpat··on Vertical farms grow veggies on site at restaurants and grocery stores
It's less helpful in already highly agricultural nations like the US, but in countries with scarce arable land or fragile ecosystems, or just very small countries like Singapore/Cambodia, vertical farming is superior to greenhouses simply due to square footage
KLexpat··on Why do they still make car alarms? (2015)
Yeah they did, we have had similar problems in Australia

The thing is, it's still a lot better than the mid-century horror stories of institutions; electrotherapy, lobotomy, people being drugged into a permanent fugue state, sexual abuse, etc. Those concerns are what drove these changes to the system.

KLexpat··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
people running multi billion dollar enterprises usually just hire people to be their personal productivity app. I mean, personal assistants and secreterial staff.

Even in fairly developed countries it's not too expensive to just hire a low wage person to act as the productivity app between a few executives.

KLexpat··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
parler is owned by partisan media personalities such as dan bongino now. gab is political, but more so in terms of ideas and values. parler is explicitly, aggressively, partisan political from what i can see. I don't use either platform
KLexpat··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
If they get large quantities of Gen-X and baby boomers to move from FB to Gab, I think that will kill FB.

When they open up digital marketing on a platform thats less saturated, that will be the real test though. If Gab can do digital marketing decently corporations will start paying them money and stop criticising them so openly.

KLexpat··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
Gab is #537 highest traffic website in the US, up from #647 yesterday.

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/gab.com#section_traffic

I agree with you about the political agitation but I would say its becoming less of an issue on Gab. Parler was quite toxic. However, I prefer MSN messenger style chatrooms, so I use Telegram mostly which has now reached 500 million daily active users.

These platforms aren't just filled with people banned from facebook anymore, and will become less political as time goes on

Netflix is fragmenting into Disneyplus, HBO , etc. Facebook and Twitter are fragmenting into a bunch of different 'alt' services

These companies will get completely crushed if the stock market decides that even a company with the scale of facebook can't establish a permanent moat from new entrants. A bit of a MySpace moment happening again

>>If you take an online community down, the people that made up that community will not all end up in the same place, they won’t bring the entire culture of that community with them, and some of them won’t make the jump.

Parler was the top 180 website in the USA according to alexarank, before it went down the other day. This is just from mostly middle aged americans being frustrated with their facebook groups being deleted. It's pretty easy to start chans out of the box and the userbase will eventually congregate to one place

>>Maybe you end up with three new chans, but you end up with three smaller, more fractured chans. Organization and relationships will evaporate because people won’t have alternate ways of recognizing or reaching their friends, may not use the same handles, may not end up on the same sites, etc.

This is pretty irrelevant to anonymous communities. Mostly they just move to like boards, i.e. 8chan, 16chan, 2ch, 4ch, endchan, infinite chan, and more all have an /anime/ board. The point being that the board is more relevant than the chan site itself.

KLexpat··on GoDaddy Boots AR15.com
4chan /g/ is basically an uncensored 2003 version of Hacker news. In fact, they often discuss the same topics. I saw the 'gnome DE' article posted there last week - after it was shared with HN it got 1k+ upvotes. The 'blue boards' are probably very similar to you in terms of worldview
KLexpat··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
It's political hyper-reality

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperreality

The 60+ generation grew up in a time where the morning tv broadcast and whatever they could read at the town library was concrete black and white truth. There was very tight control over the distribution of any information media

Now, everyone has a voice. The problem is that these older people are still socially conditioned to believe that because something is on an expensive computer, or in a book, or a man is saying it on a screen, well - it must be true! Because back in their day in the 70s if you saw a video on a screen it was an exercise that cost thousands of dollars.

KLexpat··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
They care a lot about control over credit markets. The entire premise of central banks controlling inflation via the money supply becomes precarious when people are able to issue and access credit outside of the controlled money supply.

You're entirely right that they want their cut, but they also don't want to end up like a country such as Indonesia or Vietnam where all the financing has to be organised in the USA. The US FED can print money during a recession to ease credit conditions; many non-western countries have no such luxury because while they might have a sovereign currency, all the serious enterprise in their country is financed in New York and cities in Western Europe.

KLexpat··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
One can determine their own rate of interest.

I mean, I could lend you 500 sheep and request 500 sheep + 10% per annum for each year you hold my flock. If you held for 1 year, it would be 550 owed. 2 years, 605. 3 years, 665.

With sheep, you might approach this by breeding them with the aim to produce more sheep than are owed, or selling the wool to buy more sheep or whatever.

However, we could also do this with a scarce and inorganic resource such as palladium ingots. In this case there can still be interest but you would have to exchange other resources in order to acquire more palladium to pay back the loan. It is still functional provided the market for palladium has good liquidity.

EDIT: for more clarity, you could borrow bitcoin with a bitcoin-interest component in order to acquire an asset. Then if you could get paid a salary in bitcoin as well, you would be able to pay the loan back.

KLexpat··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
Capital Gains Taxes + Inheritance Taxes (more so in the UK) + Inflation means that all wealth is gradually eroded. The stigmatisation is to prevent transactions occurring outside of the taxation and government credit system.
KLexpat··on EFF to FinCEN: Stop Pushing for More Financial Surveillance
The idea of fiat currency only works when people are forced to participate in it. The petro-dollar was fairly obvious in the late 20th century, but now things are more subtle.

The key thing is ensuring that all exchanges of wealth only occur within a currency controlled by the authorities. They are not really concerned about minor instances of tax avoidance; the primary concern is that large scale economic activity could start occuring outside of a government controlled credit market place.

The goal here is to ensure that Bitcoin is financed in USD, and that the finance of this asset remains in government controlled credit. You can borrow bitcoin sure, but its in USD credit markets.

You can't at this stage get a bitcoin-mortgage, or a bitcoin credit card that never references USD. Imagine if you could transact in bitcoin all the time, and post assets as collateral to get bitcoin loans with interest pay-able in bitcoin. This would be a point where people stop measuring bitcoin in USD and start measuring things in bitcoin, and is something the US regulators seek to avoid at absolutely all costs.
