KarlTheCool··on ProtonMail Complied with 5,957 Data Requests in 2022 – Still Secure and Private?
Ah, I tried to boot up my old account but it looks like it's been deleted from being in the free tier too long. I cancelled my subscription after they had a nearly week long downtime.
KarlTheCool··on Some mistakes I made as a new manager
I feel this response. If voicing your opinion is a risk that needs calculating, it's not worth trying. It's sad to see a small team's chat be bullied into a stream of just :eyes: :raising_hands: :party_popper:
KarlTheCool··on [ASK HN] how to filter out MSM media from YouTube feed?
As part of your recommendations blob? You can click the vertical ... on a video and click "Don't recommend channel"

The "Breaking News" sections that show up sometimes you could probably zap with uBlock Origin.

KarlTheCool··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
Microsoft has a serious issue with thinking it's ok to wake up from sleep mode. I added a script to the task scheduler to resleep if woken up by anything other than the power button[1]. In retrospect, the wake ups were either to perform updates or some kind of bug related to transitioning to hibernation which ends up with the pc idling on[2]. Both of which would result in the classic hot bag / dead battery situation.

KarlTheCool··on Ask HN: What's your keyboard and what you love and hate about it?
Here's a pic: https://twitter.com/KarlTheCool/status/1388185172189741064

It's the YMDK Split 64: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000074426801.html

I wanted a split for ergo while working and an easier time gaming since I play with my keyboard 90 degrees. Not many options in the split market, but hot swappable is a killer feature considering the price difference between switches and a new keyboard. The small right shift was a pain since it's the one I use the most but I got used to it. Other than that the firmware is programmable so you can do whatever you want.

I have it paired up Kailh speed copper switches. They feel like laptop switches where there's no travel before the bump. You're just immediately pressing the bump.

KarlTheCool··on Just because I have a vertical screen doesn’t mean I’m on a phone
I think the bigger problem is the design pattern of "mobile-mode vs desktop-mode". The document isn't meant to escape hatch on size, individual elements are.
KarlTheCool··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
The Priv is still my all time favourite form factor for a smart phone. Typing benefits are self explanatory but having your thumb off the screen by swiping on the keyboard was super nice. It was a total step backwards switching to a fixed keyboards.
KarlTheCool··on Snapdrop – AirDrop equivalent through a web browser using WebRTC
Phones home and groups users who have the same IP address together. https://github.com/RobinLinus/snapdrop/blob/master/server/in...
KarlTheCool··on Anti-fingerprinting extensions tend to make fingerprinting easier
I've been using Tor with proxy disabled[1] ever since that fingerprint tester[2] was posted a while ago. I figure of all people forking and hardening a web browser, I trust the tor project the most. I'm no tracking expert, but it's the only way I've been able to score a non-unique fingerprint.

KarlTheCool··on Show HN: A simple way to make HTML websites
It's worth noting when doing this it registers each anchor in the browser history. If you want to avoid this, checkbox hacking with the :checked selector is an option.
KarlTheCool··on Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation
The one I know of is Liberapay (https://liberapay.com/) The most true to concept part? They don't take a cut on transactions, but instead have their own page on the site (https://liberapay.com/Liberapay/)
KarlTheCool··on Just how fast is too fast when it comes to web requests?
Probably a skeleton screen would be better. Show an empty version of the usual ui but with blocky placeholders as stuff loads in.
