Kenji··on Who Aligns the Aligners?
`p(doom)` is ridiculous nonsense. How do people even come up with those numbers? Some people just say "I think it's 20% that AI will wipe us out" but how did they arrive at this number? Yeah they just made it up out of thin air, that's right. Complete fabrication without any evidence to back up such a probability. It's not like an asteroid whose trajectory you measure and you have certain instrument tolerances and measurement inaccuracies, hence the laws of physics tell you that your prediction has a 20% accuracy. No, it's all just made up bullshit. Just like all the AI safety guys: They're professional bullshitters and have been all along. Doesn't mean they're wrong per se, but it means that if they're right, they're right because they guessed right.
Kenji··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
Inflation babyyyyyyyyyy. See if your salary also raises by 10-20% this year. You're getting priced the fuck out of everything, have fun.
Kenji··on My friends left me because I told them I was a furry
They weren't true friends if they reacted like this. The furry fandom is very sweet and I'm sure you'll make new friends, don't let it drag you down.
Kenji··on The EU still wants to scan your private messages and photos
Of course. They literally spell their playbook out for you:

“We decide something, then put it out there and wait for a while to see what happens.

If there is then no great outcry and no uprisings, because most people do not even understand what has been decided, then we continue—step by step, until there is no turning back.”

— Jean-Claude Juncker

Kenji··on Billy bookshelves as a retro motherboard "rack"
Nice fire safety and grounding. Wood is ideal for both. They should build data centers like this.
Kenji··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 6.19
Certainly they know about it. There is no way they don't.
Kenji··on UK government exempting itself from cyber law inspires little confidence
Not just cyber security.
Kenji··on Crypto investors face tax crackdown as 70% non-compliant
The tax is protection money so that you don't get beaten and put in a cage. Do you know how statism works?
Kenji··on Ubuntu LTS releases to 15 years with Legacy add-on
I bought a hammer 2 decades ago and it still works flawlessly without me performing any maintenance. One day, the idiots in software engineering will realize that this is how tools are supposed to behave.
Kenji··on KDE celebrates the 29th birthday and kicks off the yearly fundraiser
Huh, why? Minecraft is Java. It works perfectly fine on Linux, both the server and the client.
Kenji··on In 1776, Thomas Paine made the best case for fighting kings −and being skeptical
Next up: Fight the political class and the bureaucrats. Enlightenment step by step.
Kenji··on The Vaccine Trust Framework
> Trust is a key component of vaccine demand, yet there is a lack of consensus on how to define trust alongside a lack of actionable, contextually grounded measurement tools validated in low-income and middle-income countries.

How about you make it safe and effective. Psychological manipulations and games won't get you anywhere. Spend the R&D budget on the actual product.

Kenji··on Open Banking and Payments Competition
Bitcoin is a better store of value than USD. Change my mind.
Kenji··on We fall for fake health information – and how it spreads faster than facts
HN always cuts off these fluff words in the beginning, like "Why" and "How". Often, it completely butchers the title. I think it's a stupid policy, but here we are.
Kenji··on RFK Jr. rejects cornerstone of health science: Germ theory
What a gross misrepresentation of RFK Jr.'s views. He thinks that people who are healthy, by means of nutrition, sports and absence of contact with environmental toxins, are much more resilient to germs and other health conditions. Which is obviously true. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Kenji··on Italy demands Google poison DNS under strict Piracy Shield law
DNS is usually poisoned at the ISP level. ISPs provide DNS for the customers. DoH helps in two ways: You choose a different DNS resolver and it's over HTTPS so you don't have any goons meddling with it.
Kenji··on Italy demands Google poison DNS under strict Piracy Shield law
DOH is your friend. My regime poisons DNS and enabling DOH makes things accessible again.
Kenji··on 'Indiana Jones' jailbreak approach highlights vulnerabilities of existing LLMs
I would be surprised if the NSA did _not_ have a [Room 641A](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A) in OpenAI and the other AI companies.
Kenji··on Windows 11 – There's still nothing worth my time
A lack of improvements I could stomach. What bothers me are the regressions! It's getting worse with every update!
Kenji··on Stay Gold, America
If Trump was killed, it could have started a civil war in the US. Be careful what you wish for.
Kenji··on Feds: Tether has become a money laundering tool for Mexican drug trafficker
So? The US dollar has funded terrorism in the Middle East for decades and we don't see the Feds becoming concerned about the way this currency works.
Kenji··on Microsoft Recall is now an explorer.exe dependency
> For many graphics professionals, that's like asking if you'd consider replacing C++ with Rust.

So, that's a yes?

Kenji··on The Internet Archive has lost its appeal in Hachette vs. Internet Archive
It would be nice to have an archive with the blessing of our overlords, but I guess true preservation of data can only happen in illegality.
Kenji··on For those who hear voices, the ‘broken brain’ explanation is harmful
When you say you 'hear' the voices, is it internally like remembering a catchy song and playing it in your head, or does it appear to come from outside of you, like when a second person in the room is talking to you and you hear it?
Kenji··on Vulnerable transistors threaten to upend Europa Clipper mission
Yes, all the time. This is normal. Big news of problems travel through back channels. Nobody is gonna announce their big fuckup for the world to see, unless compelled by law, and even then most won't do it. We had to sign NDAs to find out about severe Intel processor silicon bugs. Obviously you're not gonna read that info on Hackernews afterwards.
Kenji··on Led Zeppelin had an electric fireplace in their plane (2018)
It's ridiculous clickbait then. I thought there was an actual fire inside the plane.
Kenji··on Easter eggs on Swiss maps (2021)
Swiss people are extremely humorous, at least if you don't do laundry 1 minute past your allowed slot. Light-hearted fun is something that is taken very seriously around here.
Kenji··on "If nothing changes, all remaining Nitter instances will go down eventually"
Nitter is the only thing that made Twitter/X accessible without a goddamn account. Well, good bye, X.
Kenji··on Committing to Rust for Kernel Code
Is there evidence that Rust compiles any slower than C++? Granted, it doesn't compile at the speed of C, but it does a lot more and you can write a lot denser code, so one line of Rust may easily supplant dozens of lines of C.
Kenji··on EU's concealment of secret 'expert list' on CSAM regulation is maladministration
> I had it with these people.

You've had it with the EU bureaucrats? What a shame, CSAM has been detected on your phone. Prepare to be apprehended.
