Kneecaps07··on Setting up a free *.city.state.us locality domain (2025)
I don't understand why getting a letter notarized is being treated as some huge ordeal. Pretty much any bank or credit union has a notary on staff. It takes 5 minutes. Many lawyers and accountants are notaries. Many people here probably know someone who is a notary and they don't even realize it.
Kneecaps07··on How I, a non-developer, read the tutorial you, a developer, wrote for me
I write stuff for our internal teams and it's usually for sensitive systems where you can cause a lot of problems if you make a mistake. I will often start the doc by saying "This assumes you know how to use x, y, and z. If not, then you probably shouldn't be doing this." We limit access already, but some of these could be used in a DR scenario by someone who is not super-familiar with the product. I purposefully will not explain certain things because if you can't figure those out, then you shouldn't be doing these steps.
Kneecaps07··on One Token to rule them all – Obtaining Global Admin in every Entra ID tenant
It takes like two minutes to create a tenant. Click Next a bunch, enter a credit card, you're done.

And yes they have different types of accounts and methods of billing. Their customer base is probably in the hundreds of millions. People are going to want options. I don't really see the issue there.

Kneecaps07··on I convinced HP's board to buy Palm and watched them kill it
I still miss my Palm Pre. I've sat here since it died and watched Android and iOS slowly adopt the UI that my Pre had 15 years ago. We were swapping between apps with cards and swiping them away a decade before anyone else.

I had multiple friends end up buying the Pre and the non-slidey Pre (I can't remember the name) because they saw what I had thought it was so cool.

Now my LG TV runs WebOS, which I assume is the name with no shared code, but who knows.

Kneecaps07··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
The hotel is at least a known quantity. You have a pretty good idea of what you're getting into, the expectations are clear between all parties, and you're having a fairly consistent experience between different hotels. With Airbnb you have no idea who or what you're dealing with.

With a hotel, I don't have to worry about a doorman asking me who I am and then having to lie, per the host's instructions (yes, this happened to me). I probably don't have to worry about the pictures being of an entirely different unit and having an entire day of my vacation ruined trying to find somewhere else to stay (yes, this happened to me). I know exactly where the hotel is before I hand over hundreds of dollars.

Kneecaps07··on Ask HN: Is there hope for Microsoft 365 support?
Edit: Nevermind, I see that you've already done this.

It might be worth it to pony up for an M365 license or two, send yourself an email, and then open a support ticket inquiring why the email was blocked. I would even avoid mentioning that you are the sender. Just pretend you're a regular customer who receives email from your domain and you're wondering why it was blocked and if there's anything that can be done to stop it from happening.

Kneecaps07··on The best browser bookmarking system is files
Didn't Internet Explorer do that? It was just the "Favorites" folder c:\users\username.
Kneecaps07··on The best place to drink is the emptiest bar in the city
As someone who drank heavily for ten years, I can confirm that this person didn't miss out on anything, except feeling like crap all the time, and money that disappears.
Kneecaps07··on JP Morgan fined by SEC for deleting email records
Everyone thinks it's malicious. I'm more likely to believe it was a poorly-trained IT person who thought they were in the test environment, or something along those lines.
Kneecaps07··on Amazon shuts newspaper and magazine subscriptions for Kindle and print
If you use it through your Prime subscription you can now only listen to their playlists. You can't specify a specific album by a specific artist.
Kneecaps07··on Amazon shuts newspaper and magazine subscriptions for Kindle and print
A monopoly just means you control the prices of a particular market. Amazon, in my opinion, absolutely has control of the ebook market. If they lower prices, everyone else has to lower theirs to keep up.
Kneecaps07··on Microsoft Unveils Its Own Version of Nvidia's RTX Super Resolution
That is literally the "Games" pane you can turn on in the settings. It's just the store for their games. It's not the default Edge experience. You only see that when you purposefully turn it on.
Kneecaps07··on Royal Caribbean to use SpaceX's Starlink to provide internet onboard their fleet
You could just not purchase the internet package?
Kneecaps07··on Airbnb employees can live and work anywhere
I found this really interesting. I remember in a previous job, I moved to a lower cost of living city in the same state. My employer told me about about how they were considering lowering my salary because of this. They weren't billing any less for my time. I wasn't any less productive.

I got out of there soon after and found a better place in the new city.

Kneecaps07··on Cities should not pay for new stadiums
People in Buffalo aren't happy about this, but the Bills are a BIG part of this city's identity. The Bills owner (an oil billionaire, by the way) is threatening take the team to another city if the state doesn't help pay for the stadium.
Kneecaps07··on Analysing the AI of Super Mario 64
I think they're more talking about how in Zelda you can break into everyone's house, steal their money and smash all their pots, and they never acknowledge how you've violated them.
Kneecaps07··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
There's an argument to be made for quality of life for your employees. As someone who has transitioned from on-prem server management to mainly cloud work, my job happiness has skyrocketed. I haven't set foot in a data center in three years and I do not miss it one bit.

Dealing with hardware failures, hardware vendors, confusing licensing, having to know SKUs, racking new cabinets, swapping hard drives, patching servers - it's all awful work. When you go cloud only, you can be more productive instead of dealing with some of that nonsense work.

Kneecaps07··on Dark Web – Justice League
> Through this effort, millions of dollars in ransom payments have been recovered

I'm curious about who gets this money? I certainly have never heard of a company getting their money back from the feds.

Kneecaps07··on Google Had Secret Project to ‘Convince’ Employees ‘That Unions Suck’
A union offers other protections. Right now, your employer can (I'm assuming) just fire you for whatever they want. If you have a union and a proper contract, then they need justification and the union will back you up.
Kneecaps07··on New FDA-approved eye drops could replace reading glasses for millions
> "I was in denial because to me that was a sign of growing older, you know, needing to wear glasses"

Seriously? I had to start wearing glasses when I was 11.

Kneecaps07··on Hackers stole $650k and got away, showing limits to law enforcement’s reach
The secret is to be rich.
Kneecaps07··on LA pays $2600 per homeless tent, per month
When you were making $20k/mo did you not put some aside in an emergency fund? What were you doing with all of that money while you were making it?
Kneecaps07··on Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) to be retired on June 15, 2022
In an AD environment, you can push out a centralized list that is easy to update. We've found that IE Mode unfortunately works very well. I wish it didn't work so well because it allows us to keep these IE sites around indefinitely.
Kneecaps07··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
I got a cold about two weeks ago and I'm only now almost recovered. I work at a hospital so got a COVID test to be safe, even though I'm fully vaccinated. They ran a respiratory panel as well. They called me with the results and I almost had to change my pants because they informed me I had "Coronavirus OC43.... which is essentially the common cold".
Kneecaps07··on Union's evidence in Amazon vote 'could be grounds for overturning election'
In my state, you can no longer be forced to join a union. At my employer, there are something like 1000 people eligible to join the union. 99% of them are in the union. They often find the people that aren't in the union didn't join simply because they didn't know they could join.

Yes, that's anecdotal, but I've been in two unions at two separate jobs and have literally never met anyone who wishes they weren't in it.

Kneecaps07··on Union's evidence in Amazon vote 'could be grounds for overturning election'
If this is what the workers got without a union, imagine how much better it could be with a union negotiating on their behalf?
Kneecaps07··on Writing HTML in HTML (2019)
He actually addresses this by saying he doesn't care about the previous posts. They'll just have a different format and are a time capsule.
Kneecaps07··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
This is unethical, but outsource yourself. Get contractor jobs and then hire cheap overseas workers to do the work and pocket the difference. If you can get a few of these gigs going and can manage your calendar you can probably cut yourself down to 20 hours a week.

Just be better at hiding it than the guy we hired who got busted doing this literally within the first hour of his first day. Don't let your boss take over your computer while your contractor is controlling your computer via WebEx!

Kneecaps07··on Major employers scrap plans to cut back on offices – KPMG
My problem is I don't have a dedicated area at home for "work". And even if I did, I'm the one paying for it. My work desk is also my computer desk. So by the end of the day, maybe I want to play a PC game, but the last thing I want to do is spend more time at the desk.
Kneecaps07··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
I had a boss who would put one simple instruction at the end of the job posting - "Please send your resume as a PDF". This was for a technician job at an MSP. He would immediately delete any applications that didn't have a PDF attached. If I recall, it was something like 60% of the applications he got that he deleted immediately.
