LEDThereBeLight··on How is music possible
It is this way with all art. If you ask someone to describe a work which is “good art” or “well designed”, it usually takes longer to describe than things which are considered too simple (easily compressed) and also longer to describe than things which are considered too random (easily compressed). But not all things which take this Goldilocks amount of words to describe are considered well designed, just some of them. So art is also more than that.
LEDThereBeLight··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
No one would ever know. She’d just continue being a terror, on her own, with no one to moderate her or how she behaves around the kids.
LEDThereBeLight··on The Corporate Happiness Treadmill and the Case for Doing Less
It takes years to build the habit of being able to be present at work and give it your best, no matter how much you “care” about the actual work. People are relying on you either way, and those habits and mindsets carry into other areas of your life. You may as well give it an honest effort, and be proud knowing you’re someone who shows up and can be relied on.
LEDThereBeLight··on The Corporate Happiness Treadmill and the Case for Doing Less
Shouldn’t it be a part of your character? It’s what you spend most of your waking hours doing.
LEDThereBeLight··on Tell HN: GitHub refuses to remove cracked copies of my software after a month
Younger, terminally online people are largely degenerates. You’re just being sensationalist.
LEDThereBeLight··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met
I don’t know, it has taken me months to onboard onto any codebase I’ve ever worked on.
LEDThereBeLight··on Book of Shapes – Collection of minimal, generative and customizable SVG-patterns
It’s research. It’s not for anyone, until someone who needs it sees it and starts using it.
LEDThereBeLight··on "Sike" vs. "Psych"
So basically, no one knows the correct spelling or where it came from, but in true redditor fashion everyone insists it’s the more intellectual option and everyone who disagrees is an idiot.
LEDThereBeLight··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
It’s not some conspiracy. If they knew how to make the AI responses better and more concise, they would. They just don’t yet.
LEDThereBeLight··on Seven books I keep close because I love them
This reminds me of the story of Narcissus. The tragedy is that he cannot love anyone who loves him, because he cannot love himself. When he rejects the advances of the young man Ameinias, he is punished by Nemesis who proclaims that Narcissus “would never be able to be loved by the one he fell in love with.” The irony is that this was already his curse; after his punishment, he fails to recognize his own face in a pool of water, and falls in love with his wounded self, who cannot love him back.
LEDThereBeLight··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
It’s just the wrong analogy. Harnesses, for the most part, extend an agent’s capabilities and better ground them in the real world through tools and the ability to check external sources, rather than restricting them.
LEDThereBeLight··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
Think about how much scrolling through UIs, settings menus, and different interfaces we have for every app that are all designed differently. Is this really peak technology, or something that is just the best we’ve been able to do without “smart” agents that can manipulate these programs themselves?

Is swiping on a flat screen really the endgame?

LEDThereBeLight··on OpenAI's new device will be hockey puck-sized and cost over $300
OpenAI isn’t interested in useless products that sell for quick money. They want people to use it, they want to be embedded in the public’s mindshare.
LEDThereBeLight··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
Reactionary emotional advice does no good, it just makes people want to hold their positions more defensively. If you care enough to say something, care enough to say it with reasons that might shift someone’s perspective.
LEDThereBeLight··on Making difficulty curves in games
“We’ve noticed you keep dying to this boss. Would you like to play on the difficulty intended for children instead?”
LEDThereBeLight··on We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works
Almost no part of that is due to people using machines they do not understand.
LEDThereBeLight··on Uber's $1,500/month AI limit is a useful signal for AI tool pricing
Because it’s cheaper to pay for the tokens than to pay their engineers to worry about a worse, homebrewed setup.
LEDThereBeLight··on I built a vulnerable app and spent $1,500 seeing if LLMs could hack it
Are you American? I used my American drivers license for verifying a personal account and it was approved with no problem. I wonder how they decide.
LEDThereBeLight··on Failing grades soar with AI usage, dwindling math skills in Berkeley CS classes
To say that students don’t benefit from getting good grades using LLMs is incredibly naive. Learning is only about the third or fourth most important “benefit” for students, after getting a degree, getting good grades, and making connections.
LEDThereBeLight··on They’re made out of weights
The only pseudo-intellectualism I see is from you. You’re missing the whole point.
LEDThereBeLight··on They’re made out of weights
It’s just a matter of perspective. Procedures and memory are the same, and they’re also different, depending on how you want to look at it.
LEDThereBeLight··on FBI arrests CIA official with $40M in gold bars in his home
Prayer does work, through the mechanism of putting your thoughts in perspective and context and sharing them outside yourself. Whether or not people understand the reason “why” it works doesn’t matter.
LEDThereBeLight··on Domain expertise has always been the real moat
I’ve noticed this too. Any idea why modern language books get this so wrong?
LEDThereBeLight··on Multiple commencement speakers booed for AI comments during graduation speeches
It’s always funny to me to see people in tech, who have largely been employed to put other people out of work for the last 50 years, change their stance on tech as soon as it starts to affect them.
LEDThereBeLight··on Lessons for Agentic Coding: What should we do when code is cheap?
Code has always been a bottleneck for any product which involves software.
LEDThereBeLight··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
What bizarre advice. It completely misses the point.
LEDThereBeLight··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
You’re right. Maybe a statement with something like “Never bet against America!”
LEDThereBeLight··on GPT-5.5
You’re still living in the past. It will be an LLM working on it in the future.
LEDThereBeLight··on US appeals court declares 158-year-old home distilling ban unconstitutional
Give me a break.
LEDThereBeLight··on OpenAI closes funding round at an $852B valuation
Right now, you’d use skyscanner directly for finding flights. Maybe Expedia for hotels. What if instead of needing to know about what app to use for every different type of thing you wanted to book, and dealing with their own separate UIs and dark patterns to upsell you, you just ask ChatGPT to curate a list for you, and then tell it to book once you’ve chosen?

In 20 years, we may not be writing UIs for apps anymore. We may just be writing tools for AI agents to consume.
