> Starcraft competitions are still on tv in South Korea 28 years later because they got the balance just right, and all the dirty little details of that universe.

Are they? I thought after the pro league failed it's transition to SC2 and the GSL ended that it mostly went to streaming platforms.

It feels like the problem was the market ended up in a race to the bottom and so most of the made-for-PC controllers just sucked. The best option was to buy your preferred console controller and use that with PC.

> Meanwhile I have to hunt around and specifically request for Razer or Mad Catz or other PC-specific brands.

Since you mention conbinis, I'm guessing you're in Japan. Having just been there, game software is receding from the smaller hobby stores, and then in the tech stores like Bic Camera, the PC gaming stuff is one floor down.

> From this point on, every year "physical media & a Jellyfin install" is going to be more sensible.

Which of course is why physical media will increasingly rarely be offered as an option going forward

Macha··on EA is shutting down BioWare
To be honest, I’m slightly concerned for Wube in the medium term. They had one mega hit, but they’ve scaled up a lot from that (I think the average team size over factorio development was like… six and they now have like 30). There’s no guarantee their next game is a hit which is the cruel reality of game dev as an industry.

ConcernedApe likely made enough for one person to FIRE on so he’s probably fine and maybe haunted chocolatier even does get finished one day.

Macha··on Burger King Japan data breach exposes 11 million customer records
A good reason for Burger King not have had an app with accounts that linked all that info, and a good reason for users to not use such apps. Sadly companies all want those registered users.

I'm on holiday at the moment so reopened the app to transfer photos from my camera directly to my phone again after a while of not using it (at home I just use the microsd card readers in my computers). Anyway, I discovered Canon now has a mandatory account requirement. There wasn't even an account option when I bought the camera. Luckily the old apk from APK mirror still works on my phone.
Macha··on The United Kingdom generates less electricity per person than in the 1970s
The roof cavity is not large enough for hidden ducting and the ceilings in older houses low enough that exposed ducting would be a head impact hazard. So you'd end up needing one installation per room. Expensive, especially when the expertise isn't there, and mostly used by commercial users.
Macha··on State of Devs 2026
I think the experience of the gpt4/gemini2/claude2-3 era of models was widely variable depending on the use case and how much reference material there was on the internet. I'm told it was very good at producing react code for example, but my experience was it often failed to handle Rust or Kotlin type checking and failed pretty often (in less immediately detectable ways) on PHP. So looking at the trajectory from the initial copilot (could auto compete fast inverse square root and method level problems that you could also just google), to GPT4 (which from my experience, still couldn't code) and hearing that the training data by that point was "most of the internet" it wasn't that clear to me that it would reach the point it has today.

Obviously the models themselves have trended bigger since which has helped and also just the tooling and harnesses around it and the models being trained for that use case has achieved a lot since that q4 2025 window which is about the first time it became functional for me.

I was there in the early 2010s and we did have older versions of AIM, netscape in an archive CVS (svn was the day to day system when I started). But then we moved to git and only stuff that had a designated owner got moved from cvs/svn to git so there was another round of losing old source code. And another in the migration to yahoo systems post merger.

> It looks like that phrase was removed from the article, but that is standard for C-level jobs.

Isn't the standard they get a made up advisor role for some months? Though usually that involves the ex-C-level to understand the implicit expectation of not starting immediately at the next place.

Macha··on Footguns with Postgres “at time zone 'UTC'”
It only works backwards (though you can probably get away with it if your future dates are not too far forward). There are ~10 tzdb updates a year due to rule changes and if you bake a date on the other side of one to UTC too early then your app is going to have incorrect datetimes
Macha··on Footguns with Postgres “at time zone 'UTC'”
My experience is (despite the Postgres developer's advice to use it), timestamptz is largely a useless data type since it is just a wrapper around conversion to UTC.

- Are you storing past events? Just store them as UTC. Maybe you use timestamptz to do it for you, but it's actually a more obtuse interface for that than timestamp

- Are you storing future UTC times? Great, just use UTC, see above

- Are you storing future human times? Then timestamptz is actively harmful because it eagerly converts to UTC so even if you get an updated tzdb in time for when the event comes due, you don't know what happened at write time so now your datetime is ambiguous. It's less broken to use a plain timestamp + string timezone column (if you need to sort by it, maybe a denormalized _utc column too, with the understanding that you'll need to regenerate it or accept slight off-by-one errors when you update the tzdb, but at least you can do this when you know what the input value was, unlike with timestamptz)

Macha··on When did Google get so weird?
A few weeks ago, I was googling a quote from morrowind because so many NPCs were saying it at the beginning of the game that my thought was either I was running into a mod induced bug with voice line selection or else this quote must have been memed to hell.

The quote was basically “go away and stop bothering me”, which is said when your character has no faction reputation.

Anyway, Google seemed to think I was having an attack of paranoia and suggested I seek mental help.

Macha··on OpenAI Feared "Optics" of what might appear on Hacker News
BSD was under a cloud of a lawsuit at the early stages of corporate adoption of open source operating systems and by the time that was resolved network effects had given Linux too much of a lead.
Macha··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Obviously it's hard to predict the opinions of the dead, and I think a lot of the disagreement here comes from whether they view his ideas as being motivated by anti-copyright as a standalone idea or part of a larger pro-little-guy stance. I think depending on which you think it was, you can come to a different idea of what his view would be on open models. But surely both views would lead to an anti-closed models stance? Would a hypothetical generation later Aaron want to publish the weights for Claude rather than academic publisher articles?

Macha··on How one Twitch chat message became code execution on a streamer’s PC
The interesting part IMO is less the XSS on the streamer's overlay, but the fact that it could escape the browser source web page into local code execution (via a combination of OBS disabling the chromium sandbox, and using an outdated CEF version)

There are a very large contingent on HN who are against restrictions on corporate activities because they envision themselves as potential beneficiaries of a low regulation environment. Many of them also apparently view criticism itself as a restriction.
