Madmallard··on Rising rates of colorectal cancer found in nearly all age groups
U.S. is runaway corruption

So it's not really a surprise our food and drink quality and safety would suffer alongside that

It's probably going to get worse

Madmallard··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
Yeah major doubt

Maybe in 10 years when frontier-level models are easily usable and not locked down by the government and PVP between the companies and everyone else to justify their existence and take all the resources from everyone.

Maybe then it'll accelerate development.

Madmallard··on Here be monsters: What do you still need to know when agents do the work?
Every single manager and company wants to fire you over AI
Madmallard··on Anthropic trained Claude on illegally obtained Stanford professors' books
"The ruling said training on books is fair use."

Like when people bring this up as if it's somehow just like acceptable.

It's not at all. That's utter bullshit. The people that run the courts have been bought out. They have no idea what the far-reaching consequences of this is.

How'd you do that?
Madmallard··on The EPA Is Quietly Killing Its Web Archive
Why are companies allowed to remove themselves from the web archive?

They shouldn't be.

Madmallard··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
test suites cover nowhere near enough to assure reliability

and if they did for your system, then it's so simple that whether or not you used AI doesn't even really matter

except LLM generated writing and art is basically instantaneously distinguishable because of the nature of how it works? even LLM code is as well?

You just fly in from astroturfer kookoo town or what?

Madmallard··on The recently proposed o(n log n) integer multiplication algorithm [pdf]
how so?
Madmallard··on The recently proposed o(n log n) integer multiplication algorithm [pdf]
Yes you're replying to astroturfers or AI psychosis victims.
Madmallard··on The recently proposed o(n log n) integer multiplication algorithm [pdf]
IDK why this is relevant to the topic at hand.

Everyone in advanced math research understands the topics they are reading about deeply.

This person is just literally being victimized by the AI incompetence apocalypse.

Information overload + trained laziness.

Madmallard··on The recently proposed o(n log n) integer multiplication algorithm [pdf]
because the tools can't? Lol. That's not how it works. Am I in the twilight zone?

All this anthropomorphism of literal statistical text generators.

Yes they exhibit generated sentences of text that describe coherent responses about a topic when there's an inordinate amount of research material in the training data from which they are distilling sentences of sound and rational thought. That's the ONLY way it can possibly work. There are so many scenarios where the training data isn't setup like that and low and behold the generated responses are just literal garbage.

Madmallard··on AI Can Write the Code. Who Verifies It?
I mean...

"Strict rules" does so much heavy-lifting in what you said that it basically decides whether it applies to any reasonable complex system or is pointless and just worked on your constrained system and wouldn't translate to much else that isn't like directly related or analogous.

Madmallard··on AI Can Write the Code. Who Verifies It?
"If you design a modular system and generate code under strict rules, no one needs to know any of those things. We only need to understand the design and the results."

Doubt!

Sounds like utter bull-crap!

Madmallard··on AI Can Write the Code. Who Verifies It?
You can make skills files all you want and have testing agents that evidently reduce need for revisions post deployment but it's not 100% and the more you don't understand what's going on because you didn't write it, the more complex the system is, especially if it's not all testable in a way that reduces risk, and especially in a security-relevant system or one that could have consequences to people the worse all of that is.
Madmallard··on An ESPN producer who quit because of sports gambling
why is it legal? why is it being marketed on kids applications?

morality is completely out the window

Madmallard··on AI Can Write the Code. Who Verifies It?

Guard-rails are totally ineffective

Madmallard··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
Who wants to interact with AI customer service? I certainly do not. Why are we losing CS workers to AI? Because the companies are evil capitalists that do not give a fuck
Madmallard··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
Nothing to do with that

Company stock value goes up when they lay off staff. Next quarter shareholder maximization is the goal. AI and layoffs is the strategy to get there.

Madmallard··on Krea 3 – An image model built for editing at scale
Not interesting unless completely open and locally sourcable. Until then it is automatically assumed to be nefarious toward the consumer.

Madmallard··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
Go to a dental school
Madmallard··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
Just go to a dental school

Don't ignore it that's genuinely foolish

Madmallard··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
Massive amount of pseudoscience in the comments here. There is science to everything they do. There also is variance in reliability and honesty which is omnipresent in our culture. There are specific criteria and cutoffs for basically every diagnosable point and condition in the mouth. You just need to find someone you can trust.
Madmallard··on Do dentists know what they're doing?
You act as if there isn't a science to it but there is...

Wisdom teeth that don't have room cause other teeth to misalign, dissolve the enamel and cause the tooth next to them to fail overtime, and if impacted can lead to jawbone infections, which underneath the lower molars are in the most dangerous spot they could be for causing life threatening consequences if unlucky or untreated...

Madmallard··on US report details extent of 'devastating' dating-app scams
Their goal is to show you what you find attractive not who is compatible with you

They also hide the people you find most attractive behind a paywall

Madmallard··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
Don't think this is a helpful or good thing to say. I have heard the opposite story with a much higher frequency among disparate groups of people.

He needs to prepare the best he can and be aggressively proactive right now.
