antisocial media is far more accurate than the original name.

This took too long to make.

I really think that Disney shit really fucked your head up, NGL Gen Y.
MajorTakeaway··on Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled
Is there something wrong with that?
MajorTakeaway··on Telegram Desktop vulnerability allowed any user's file to be stolen
I've never seen a legit good hearted person ever use Telegram. It's usually what grifters and scammers prefer to use. Or Signal.
MajorTakeaway··on Court throws out killer's sentence after judge said he loved AI video of victim
"White" Democrat here, I believe making a list based on skin color is inherently racist.
MajorTakeaway··on What should we tell our students?
UBI is investing in dividend ETFs.
MajorTakeaway··on Screens Aren't Destroying Young Minds. I Should Know
Mine seems fine. She actively refused Facebook when it came out and still does, among other things. I've even tried to get her to check out Youtube because I was amazed about that out of everyone else addicted. Nope. She's still a mean woman, maybe that has a lot to do with it. I am happy for her.
MajorTakeaway··on ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf]
Sounds like you were abused as a child and you find this upsetting.
MajorTakeaway··on EventMaxxer – Automatically apply to events to get you in the right room
Tomorrow won't go well for you, again.
MajorTakeaway··on NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates
That's what propaganda is.
MajorTakeaway··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
What footprint are we talking about? Is it emitting carbon into the atmosphere?
MajorTakeaway··on True Rate of Unemployment
It really would, most boomers seem to also think living alone while not having a girlfriend is very odd and shocking (still). Most worldviews do not and will not add up to reality.
MajorTakeaway··on Fastpotify
It's a terrible default. Period.
MajorTakeaway··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
You're on HN, that's social media.
MajorTakeaway··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Important to define what is happy and what were problems to begin with. I'm 39, no kids, and my parents weren't happy with me, but were happy otherwise. How does this factor how I'm unhappy?

Happiness should be the end goal. Contentment is part of it. Compromise. Quality over quantity and the quality doesn't have to always be great, just no regrets according to modern death bed speeches. Being happy can mean chasing one thing and not the other, which would lead to some unspoken regret, loud enough in our head.

MajorTakeaway··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Having great conversations with Uber drivers, coworkers, and online folks (nothing can compare with real life interactions due to a few concussions), and walking a nature trail every so often has done many wonders for my mental health where I thought I was unrecoverable.
MajorTakeaway··on How to compromise your system with a job interview
Even more reason to use VMs.
MajorTakeaway··on AI has access to a vastly larger working memory than the human brain
Boooom! Headshot!
MajorTakeaway··on Taste Is All That's Left
You sure you know what syntax is?
MajorTakeaway··on Water system controllers don't belong on the internet, says ex-NSA chief
Nasty looks seems to be the sign of them realizing how you proved them to be incompetent.

Incompetence will cost them their job.

If I had fuck you money I'd just call them incompetent fucks and laugh at them.

MajorTakeaway··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
Glad I have a remote control with 40 year old tech that does the same thing.
MajorTakeaway··on Martha Lillard, last US polio patient using iron lung, dies at 78 in Oklahoma
Drinking a beer for her, she went to the high school very close by. I'm far too young to remember polio but still remember my grandparents talking about it. They had died of Covid-19 before her.

Something to remember by her is that the determination to live is something that keeps us going.

MajorTakeaway··on How Doctors die. It’s not like the rest of us (2016)
MY ex-wife who was a CNA had made it a point to me that she had a DNR. How or where, she never told me. Probably for the best.
MajorTakeaway··on The fine print that follows you out the door: non-compete clauses are spreading
Rather than asking him the question of why in a simple rudimentary form, give the guy motivation to quit facebook instead. Facebook employs guilt tactics about people they know to get them to stay, and if they quit, they're likely to go back because of in person connections. By sounding condescending, the person you're replying to is likely to justify staying rather than quitting.
MajorTakeaway··on Modern decor may be straining people's brains
The article does explicitly state that the brain doesn't adapt to this.

From the article:

"And when the brain encounters something it can’t process efficiently, it doesn’t simply adapt. Brain imaging studies cited in the review show it generates stronger neural responses in visual areas, consumes more oxygen, and in some people produces pain, distortion, or worse."

MajorTakeaway··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
Welcome to HN. Eternal September has arrived here at last.
MajorTakeaway··on The circuit that lets your brain think and see
See I did what I saw when doing a task like grabbing for my Guinness to take a swig and ended up hitting my laptop with the bottle when I brought the bottle to my body.

Maybe I have a bit of inhibition going on there.

MajorTakeaway··on Slow breathing modulates brain function and risk behavior
The craziest thing I noticed about a breathing pattern and risk taking was when a murderer was in an interrogation room with a police officer when after they couldn't find his gun; he had stowed it on his ankle. The suspect took a deep inhale after reaching for his gun while the officer was focused on the computer screen in front of him, exhaled and swiftly aimed at the officers temple and fired. Then he broke out of custody and was caught shortly after.
